My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. 26th SEPTEMBER 2020 – 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR The 19th century saw the rise of a socio-cultural, intellectual movement in Bengal known as the Bengal Renaissance. This social reform movement saw the rise of various intellectuals who used the medium of creative expression as a dominant mode of promoting and debating about social structure, religion, education. Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rabindranath Tagore were the major proponents, however, along with them were also Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, known for his humanistic approach and knowledge in Vedanta philosophy and Sanskrit. Born on 26th September 1820, Ishwar Chandra, in his childhood, was introduced to the various subjects like astronomy, grammar, philosophy and literature which by his graduation in 1841 earned him the title of ‘Vidyasagar’ meaning Ocean of knowledge. His most prominent contribution has been towards the cultural awakening of the Bengal Renaissance by being a supporter of girls’ education, widow remarriages and was against high caste polygamy. He organised various public protests, the famous being the ‘Signature Campaign’ which got him into strife with the religious groups, citing scriptures for their discriminatory treatment. Ishwar countered these allegations by publishing papers on widow marriages by stating that no scripture debars widow remarriages. His constants legal intervention into these discriminatory malpractices led the formulation of the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act 1856. This landmark judgment protected the widows and gave them the right to lead a respectful life. As a scholar and philanthropist, he was a staunch supporter of dissemination of education, even to women to rise above the societal oppressions. He established schools by initiating Nari Shakti Bhandar for its funding. Along with this, he is also credited for standardising and reforming the Bengali alphabets by writing the book Borno Porichoy (Varna Parichay) and has written several books encompassing elements of mythology, humour, satire and irony. Gandhi described black Africans as “savage,” “raw” and living a life of “indolence and nakedness,” and he campaigned relentlessly to prove to the British rulers that the Indian community in South Africa was superior to native black Africans. Prize-winning Indian author Arundhati Roy says the book is “a serious challenge to the way we have been taught to think about Gandhi.” One of the first battles Gandhi fought after coming to South Africa was over the separate entrances for whites and blacks at the Durban post office. Gandhi objected that Indians were “classed with the natives of South Africa,” who he called the kaffirs, and demanded a separate entrance for Indians. Protesting the decision of Johannesburg municipal authorities to allow Africans to live alongside Indians, Gandhi wrote in 1904 that the council “must withdraw the Kaffirs from the Location. Here is a sample of what Gandhi said about black South Africans: “We felt the indignity too much and … petitioned the authorities to do away with the invidious distinction, and they have now provided three separate entrances for natives, Asiatics and Europeans.” In December 2018, his statue was removed from the University of Ghana after protests by students and staff. In Amsterdam, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized, in the UK, over 6,000 people signed an online petition to take down Gandhis statue in Leicester. His great-grandson blames young Gandhis inexperience for his lack of political correctness. He explains: Everything written in the book is true, theres no doubt about it. Além de teólogo, ele foi o maior historiador do cristianismo de sua geração, era especialista em temas patrísticos do período anterior a Nicéia, bibliotecário e ainda foi professor universitário (deu aula diretamente para Karl Barth). Entre os seus escritos, estima-se que Harnack produziu cerca de 1.600 títulos. Ele era a figura expoente do cenário teológico liberal, que foi o berço do pensamento contemporâneo do século 20. A título de curiosidade, foi Harnack que escreveu o discurso do imperador da Alemanha para a 1ª Guerra Mundial. Repare como era grande a inteligência e o poder que a sua escrita exercia... Seu precursor foi o teólogo Albrecht Ritschl (da Escola Ritschliana), e ao lado do pastor batista e ativista social Walter Rauschenbusch, Harnack ganhou destaque no liberalismo pelas suas ideias criativas, as quais exerceram influência diante das principais igrejas protestantes Europeias e da América. Seu trabalho estabeleceu um novo padrão de erudição para o século seguinte. Harnack defendia a ideia de que o teólogo precisava sempre se reportar ao cerne do Evangelho, o que rompia com a ideia consolidada do helenismo. A influência mais ampla de Harnack (e que foi extensivamente lida) deu-se através de um importante livro fruto de suas palestras, chamado O que é cristianismo?. Nesta obra, ele explicou que Jesus proclamou o pai e não a si mesmo. Para Harnack, o Evangelho era simples e o trabalho consistia em separar os grãos da palha, ou seja, distinguir o que era Evangelho (grão) e o que foi acrescido ao longo do tempo (palha).
