Dipping into the archives again for this 2019 shot of Herwig Maurer, who is a musician, composer and photographer among many other things...including one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever known. He also happens to be a long-term collaborator with whom I have performed and recorded endless hours of improvised music over the past fifteen-plus years. Last summer we spent months recording every Wednesday evening at an old restaurant/venue in Topanga Canyon that was empty, but had reportedly been owned by Neil Young back in the ‘60s. To be carried away by those repetitive, hypnotic waves of sound, and to experience that link again with someone with whom you’re in such sync with through the abstract language of rhythm and time and ‘feel’ was just what I needed during what was definitely the toughest year of my life, and in retrospect, the timing of his call to propose the idea feels like more than mere coincidence. Occasionally I wonder if living in Los Angeles is what I want to continue to do, but among other factors, being able to meet and continue to collaborate with so many of the amazing people I have here over so many years makes it hard to even consider leaving. Then to be able to drive up into the hills and set my ratty, old 1960s Ludwig drum kit up on a stage that likely hosted some of the best music of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, then finish by walking out into the cool, quiet night air of a canyon that was once home to so many iconic musicians of that era ... well, there aren’t always a lot of words for that sort of thing (plus I’ve gone on long enough here). Long makes original drawings of figures in movement then manipulates the original drawings, through tracing, stamping, copying and transferring them repeatedly onto the paper. The final figures fade and shift, repeat, overlap, separate and blend into each other with wispy, broken and smudged lines. Little know fact...I tossed my hat into the acting ring once. I was living in Italy my senior year @ NYU and the legendary #WoodieKingJr called and said that he had a roll for me to play. I explained that I was living my best life in Italy and that I wasn’t an actress. He told me the one and only #RonMilner had written this role and it could only be played by me. If you you know Woodie than you know no one says no to the King. So back to NY I went to do my very first Off-Broadway play. The more I thought about it the more excited I became. I remember going into our first table read, nervous but ready and fam, when I tell you I was HORRIBLE, I was horrible! Inexperienced, anxious, overwhelmed, you name it! I just knew I was going to tank the whole production. Seeing how nervous I was my co-star (new to the game as well) held my hand under the table and whispered: “Deep breaths....you got this sis” and he never stop holding my hand for the whole run. He was magic, he captivated, he held space, he was generous and funny. He was hardworking and humble. He was so protective and pensive. A thinker. He was like watching a master class in acting. He was a force to be reckoned with. He was Chadwick Aharon Boseman. We were babies. I knew that show was the end for me in terms of acting but everyone who witness Chad’s gift knew it was just the beginning and that the sky was the limit. Over the years whenever we would see each other he would hold my hand. And ask: “you good Sis? When the 1956 Constitution declared Pakistan an ‘Islamic Republic’, many newspapers reported that the wives of most parliamentarians accused their husbands of hypocrisy. Cartoons began to appear in the papers satirising the situation. In 1958, when military chief Ayub Khan and President Iskandar Mirza imposed the country’s first Martial Law, they suspended the Constitution, claiming that it had been used by cynical politicians ‘to peddle Islam for political gains. The country’s name was changed to Republic of Pakistan. The name was eventually changed back to Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the 1973 Constitution. Dipping into the Bruce Brown archives has been one of the most enjoyable trips down surfing’s memory lane for all of us at @Outerknown. A pioneer who inspired a genre for generations to come, and captured (in my opinion) some of the most stylish eras, in-or-out of the water in surf history. His enduring titles for his films, witty narrations and voice-overs, and the indelibly-stamped graphics, art, and posters to support his films helped define a culture and have influenced artists, graphic designers, photographers, and filmmakers ever since. And check out his hand-built contraptions like the Wilson helmet cam 50 years before the GoPro to capture perspectives never seen before! With a catalogue of work as vibrant, colorful and endless as the wild adventures they sparked, its an absolute privilege to honor his legacy with a limited edition capsule at Outerknown.
