I dont really know what to say about my story in Aprils @womenshealthmag except that it was a textbook def labor of love (ha, get it?), made 1000% better by the expert editing of @kieramcarter and @alcuffey. Turns out, transforming data from a national sex survey into actionable, expert-informed service aint easy, but worth it? Hell yeah. Also, I gotta sneak in a lil humble brag here since 3(!) of my cover lines made it to print, and that is a) insane and b) probs never gonna happen again. Carolina Herrera dress shot at 6:20 AM...Day one....I didnt know what to expect. Usually we storyboard our shoots quite intensely but how do you storyboard a shoot with mannequins? A few days before our shoot we drove around to identify locations we liked but that was about it. The day before the first day @jamesastyle called again. I found silver balls. Ill bring them Sure! Because why not???!!! On the cover this month is British-Nigerian designer @yinka_ilori’s Project Earth installation for @theofficialselfridges that features three shops windows called ‘Dedications to Earth’ - each one offering a view of a natural landscape created using every day materials. The installations also evoke messages of hope. The cover features sun-disks, each one “dedicated to every new sunrise that gives us a chance to make a change”. The cover is also part of this month’s Colour Issue, which explores the nature of colour within design, architecture and art - be it to enhance a narrative, express a culture, or entice a sense of hope and positivity. Absolutely devastated to hear the news about the mag closures at Bauer, and all the incredible talent being let go alongside the titles they poured so much hard work and passion into for so long. But of course, it’s the closure of ELLE that really breaks my heart. Launching it was one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. When Erin, the lovely editor at @asac.albertas Birth Issues Magazine, put out a call for submissions for their Birth during a Pandemic special issue, I thought it might be a good moment to share my experience. 🌈 TW: infertility, pregnancy loss. For the first time, I wrote about my journey to motherhood, from a difficult diagnosis to my first miracle baby (Felix!), a traumatic loss, my experience with anxiety and panic attacks following this sequence of events, then finally having our rainbow baby (Beatrix!) arrive during the earliest days of the pandemic. 💗 I shared our story as a way of documenting my experience during this unique and challenging moment in time, but more so as a way of trying to help others feel less isolated in their struggles on the road to parenthood. None of this was easy to write about, let alone to go through. It feels incredibly vulnerable to do so but feeling alone when youre in the midst of a fertility struggle or grieving process is far worse. Somehow stepping away from the squares for the weekend meant I missed the all-important #nationaldaughterday ... but around here, thats pretty much every day. I am so thankful and blessed because of it. While I believe every child is a miracle, Evie is a child I was told Id never have. I know God is writing her story for his purposes. After years of infertility treatment and heartache, we were able to have Elaina, our oldest, through IVF. When I started talking about another child, the Dr. reminded me it wasnt likely outside of treatment for endremesois and similar expensive procedures. Plus there was that emergency c-section delivery to think about. But in the years of suffering and struggle for a family, I learned to cling to God. He was faithful. His presence real. His love an anchor for my hurting soul. My faith grew, mustard-sized. And, I hoped. So, while at a Women of Faith conference, I stepped into a bathroom stall and took the thousandth ovulation test. Praying for a miracle. It was positive! A first.. There was no big-city shopping after that- my girlfriends just rushed me (4 hours) home. 😃 Evelynne is a daily reminder of Gods goodness. She is joy. I dont usually share personal stories like this on social media, but I was listening to Elizabeth Elliot talk about suffering as thanksgiving. And, I was moved to share- I find myself rejoicing that for this child, I prayed. One of my family pictures is in the current issue of die ZEIT Switzerland. In Switzerland it is impossible for fathers to take parent leave. Even the current discussion to change the law so that fathers can take 10 days parent leave won‘t change that. I‘m so glad my husband could stay at home the first year with our two sons. After the ‚parent-time‘ we equally split the time we‘re at home, so that we both could continue with our careers and have enough time with the kids.
