Once destroyed and made illegal by President Ulysses S Grant in 1871, it resurfaced almost exactly 100 years ago, in the 1920’s. I think it’s about 100 years overdue to abolish this stain on American history once and for all. Hey there Cool Cats and Kittens! Welcome to another beautiful #GreenProjectWednesday 🌧 The University of Arizona has had some challenges that other schools may never face. Because our school was dropped right in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, the University of Arizona has always had to get creative with the use and collection of water resources. 💦 Old Main, arguably one of UAs most iconic locales, has some of the most pristine landscaping on campus. This type of landscaping is often referred to as Xeriscaping, which means that the plants are drought tolerant and little water is needed to maintain the landscape. However, the landscape design around Old Main is not just drought resistant, its a Water Harvesting Basin! 🌊 The Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science collaborated with this unique landscape and was able to install water harvesting basins that collect the rainwater that would have just been sitting there to evaporate! ☔️ In terms of environmental health, water is one of Arizonas biggest issues. Here are some tips on how you can save water, both on and off campus! You can... Collect Rainwater! I was commissioned by @edinburghmedicalschool to create this image. It is a reimagining of a Rembrandt painting from 1632 called ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp’ (swipe to see it) a copy of which hangs in their Department of Anatomy. The original shows a group of male medical students and teacher gathered around a cadaver. It was decided to reproduced this image with contemporary women medical students who represent the Edinburgh Seven who were the very first British women medical students 150 years ago. Being women they were at that time not allowed to graduate so were rightly honoured at last year’s posthumous degree ceremony. It was a tough job to shoot in a short period of time but I loved being part of redressing the balance. Its new home is the Sophia Jex-Blake common room in the Chancellor’s Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter. Be sure to check it out next time you are passing. The contemporary medical students are; Simran, Izzie, Sorna, Ella, Mei Yen, Caitlyn, Megan alongside Teaching Fellow in Anatomical Science, Alethea. Liam kindly modelled the cadaver. Prints are available on request. 𝐏𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐭𝐚 Aunque puede pasar algo desapercibida, fue una de las puertas más importantes durante la Reconquista. De origen andalusí, se denominaba también como del Aceituno o de la Serranilla y enlazaba Jerez con Rota y Sanlúcar. Se ubica pared con pared con las bodegas Fundador, entre las calles San Blas y Valderrama, al final de la mítica cuesta de la Chaparra. En la segunda foto, se puede apreciar la posición que ocupaba en la antigua muralla. Actualmente sólo se conserva parte de una de las torres que protegían la antigua muralla, gracias a la recuperación llevada a cabo por las bodegas Fundador. En ella podemos observar una lápida que narra un hecho acaecido en el año 1264, cuando Alfonso X El Sabio entregó este edificio a Beltrán Riquelme, por aquel entonces, alcalde de los jerezanos cristianos. Con ello pretendía dar descanso a sus caballerizas y reconocer el apoyo prestado por las tropas cristianas para expulsar a los almohades de la ciudad. Os invitamos a visitarla, ya que está a escasos minutos de la Catedral, el barrio San Mateo, la Alameda Vieja, el Alcázar y otros tantos puntos importantes de la ciudad. Pero sin duda no hay mejor plan que visitar las bodegas @bodegasfundador y al terminar, pasar a visitar esta antigua puerta de la ciudad. My introduction to Oil: Raja Ravi Varma, one of the most celebrated Indian artist of the late 18th century has been a huge inspiration for me. I very well remember seeing his work on an airline magazine cover; it was at that instant, I knew I wanted to paint. . Back in days, before internet was a thing, my mode of experiencing a painting was from a local art framing shop. The shop keeper was the only guy I would ask about paintings and at times often see the work of other artist who would drop there artworks for framing. On showing him the magazine cut out, he said to try out oils with linseed and turpentine. With absolutely no knowledge or training, I bought limited supplies and I just started. Little did I know, I was learning from one of the greatest Indian artist of all times, I made my very fist oil Painting at the age of 14, year 2002. . This is how I got introduced to oil painting. Not only that, now reflecting on my thought process, I see a theme that was incepted way back in my early teenage, which will later on define my body of work and process. . Obelisco e canhões 📸📜 Foram deixados pelos ingleses aproximadamente 20 canhões no pontal da Trincheira. Os canhões foram rolando para o fundo do mar, na proporção que ia desmoronando o barranco de blocos de piçarro, comido ou tragado pelo mar, e somente quatro dos canhões foram trazidos com muito custo da Trincheira para a cidade no ano de 1890. Dois canhões foram levados para a Praça Martim Afonso de Souza e estão expostos em base de cimento ao lado do Obelisco desde Agosto de 1931, quando Cananéia comemorava com festividades a passagem dos seus quatro centenários de fundação. O terceiro canhão foi levado para o alto do Morro São João e explodiu quando tentavam fazê-lo funcionar. O último canhão foi levado para a cidade de Iguape. #TheHighTower - Architect Carl Kay. The #tower located at 2178 #HighTowerDrive is a five-story tower housing a private elevator. It was built in the 1920s. The architecture of the tower recalls the Bolognese campanile tower in its design. The tower was designed to allow residents easy access from #Hollywood below to a walking only neighborhood above the canyon. Adjacent to the tower is a #StreamlineModerne apartment building called #HighTower Court, built between 1935 and 1936, also designed by #CarlKay. The High Tower was featured many Hollywood movies. Six years ago, against most everyones advice, we began negotiating on a dilapidated property that had been abandoned decades ago. Nestled at the foot of the Gutturu Mannu mountain chain, Is Aresus was a cluster of ruins and overgrowth. Eventually, with the help and sweat and dedication of local architects Casciu/Rango, we made it our home. Were only halfway through the project, and so it was an honor to discover that our headquarters was the winner of the National Institute of Architecture (In/Arch) Prize for Best Project by Young Architects developed in the region of Sardinia over the last five years. In their elegant and succinct explanation, the judges write that this project through a contemporary interpretation of the themes of the territorys tradition [...proposes...] to requalify and simultaneously confer new meaning on the typical rural architecture of Santadi.
