We hope you’ve learnt a little bit more about his role and our collection.⠀ ⠀ We’ll leave you with Anthony’s response to a question that asked whether he had a favourite work in the TarraWarra Museum of Art collection: ⠀ ⠀ This is very difficult question and my response would probably be different on any given day. But today, I am going to say William Robinson’s Purling Brook Escarpment (2005). During this lockdown our family has been fortunate to go on regular bushwalks in the cool temperate forests of the Yarra Ranges National Park and although Robinson’s painting is of the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland, its multidimensional perspective generates a similar sense of immersion within plunging gullies of abundant trees and foliage.⠀ ⠀ This work also reveals the artist’s appreciation for the minutiae of forms, patterns and textures within the landscape. With a rich palette of delicate impasto paint work, he treats each discrete tree fern frond and drooping eucalyptus leaf with the same intimate attention to detail, conveying his appreciation for their small but intrinsic presence within this complex ecology. SantAntonio Abate è uno dei più illustri eremiti della storia della Chiesa. Nato a Coma in Egitto, a ventanni (intorno al 250) abbandonò ogni cosa per vivere in solitudine e dedicarsi alla contemplazione e alle pratiche ascetiche per più di 80 anni: morì ultracentenario nel 356. Lopera nella foto, un gonfalone processionale con leffige del santo, realizzato nel 1457 circa da Niccolò di Liberatore detto l’Alunno, veniva portato in processione, e per questo è dipinto su entrambi i lati. Anche dopo il suo ingresso nella pinacoteca di #Deruta, e fino al 1953, è stato impiegato nella processione del 17 gennaio per la festa del santo dedicatario. It is now in the private collection of the Conseil Investissement Art BNP Paribas but was displayed in the Musée dOrsays 2007 Courbet exhibition. In the 1840s Courbet produced portraits of his friends and clients as well as self-portraits, including Self-Portrait with a Black Dog (1842). He spent time in the Louvre copying works by José de Ribera, Zurbaran, Velasquez and Rembrandt which started to influence his work. He broke from his traditional vertical format for the work. He was attached to Le Désespéré, taking it with him when he went into exile in Switzerland in 1873. Late Visitors to Pompeii, Carel Willink, c. 1931. The Dutch artist, Carel Willink (1900- 1983) painted worlds that look familiar, but dont actually exist. In Late Visitors to Pompeii, the artist is shown standing with three other men. They are in a ruined landscape littered with broken fragments of ancient temples, while in the distance a plume of smoke rises from the Vesuvius. The artist once described his own work as imaginary realism, by which he meant that contrary elements, although borrowed from reality, are merged as in a dream. This work forms part of the exhibition, This is Surrealism! Every one of us has times when we need to know things will get better. For emotional health and spiritual stamina, everyone needs to be able to look forward to some respite, to something pleasant and renewing and hopeful, whether that blessing be near at hand or still some distance ahead. My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9). It is the very Son of God Himself. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say, hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek. He does love you, and He knows your fears. He hears your prayers. Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven, but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. La scena evoca silenzio e sacralità, immersa in una luce lunare che avvolge pallidamente il paesaggio. ✤ ✤ ✤ 🇬🇧 “Night on Mount Athos” is an oil on canvas (232x130 cm) by Hermann David Salomon Corrodi, executed in 1905 and currently in a private collection. Corrodi (1844-1905) was an Orientalist painter much appreciated at the time whose work developed mainly landscape paintings. He traveled a lot and portrayed scenes of daily life in the Middle East, Greece and Corsica. The painting in the picture was made in the last months of his life and depicts, in a beautiful nocturnal landscape, the ascent to the sacred Mount Athos of a small group of Greek monks. Very close to the city center, there is a wide, but steep track that reaches the Hostal del Sol country House.
