Six months ago, everything changed. Suddenly, I was scared of the future, I was afraid for my family, my health, my career, and in the back of my mind, I was terrified that the world was ending and I was alone. Within all the uncertainty and stress, in a hugely overwhelming and historic moment where New York City and the rest of the world was shutting down, I did what many of us did: I downloaded a dating app and tried like hell to distract myself. Confined to my apartment, there was little prospect of actually meeting anyone in person, but I needed some conversation that wasn’t with a worried family member or coworker. I had only seen two people in the last week, my roommate and her boyfriend, and it was looking like my next writing venture would be titled something like “Quarantining, the Third Wheel Edition.” One evening, while working on some poetry at my new at-home workstation (aka on my bed), I took a break and flipped through five photos of a stranger and skimmed his profile; lives in Brooklyn, great; musician, very cool; irrational fear of the loch ness monster, could be worse. So we started chatting, and with the pressure of ever having to meet in person alleviated, I sent him an excerpt of my writing. A few hours later, he messaged me back, and with a preamble of, “This might be cheesy, but I made something for you,” he sent me a song written to the excerpt I had given him. And this is how our process began, I would write lyrics and Nick would transform the words into beautiful little demos practically overnight. From that first day and the very first song we wrote together, I have been floored by Nick’s overwhelming talent and constant dedication to his work. Collaborating with Nick has brought so much unexpected happiness and love to my life, and of course, some super cool songs that we can’t wait to share! here goes nothing... this has definitely been such an emotional 24 hours. i look back at all this time i spent building my brand from the ground up. questioning, why would someone with so much hate towards my art, let it lead to this? don’t they know it’s how I’m able to provide for my family? the only reason why i keep pushing, for them? then you funkers come into the picture. something I’ve never seen happen, ever. this wave of love, support, and passion is what I’ve been receiving. i kept thinking, damn now no one will know where to find me but everytime i check my messages, you funkers are there showing all the love and support. and for that, i funkin thank you from the bottom of my heart. the reason why my heart was racing when i found out everything was deleted was not because of the following. funk that🖕🏼 that’s the least of my worries. my thought was, look at all the art, couples, and passion i put into this. all the conversations i had saved on this app to keep in touch with you, suddenly all gone. that’s what broke me. then I realized, it has nothing to do with this app at all. the love and support far surpasses what this little app can do.
