The Tawaki and Kororā from Bullers 1st edition, Birds of New Zealand. Tawaki are unique amongst penguins as they build their nests deep beneath lush rainforest, unlike any other species of penguin. The Kororā, also known as little blue penguin is the smallest species of penguin growing to a humble height of 33cm. It feels pretty weird to be talking about this album again! There were so many ups and downs- the pain of its subject matter, the joy of the music, the physical obstacles, lost funding, new feelings of major self-empowerment, and then major disappointment.. A week that should have just been fun, the celebration of a self release surrounded by incredible friends and support, was turned on its head when a label I never reached out to stepped in, scooped me up into their hot air balloon, flew me high into the sky and then popped it. All I could say to myself over and over again was….”Why couldn’t they have just left me the fuck alone” I buried it. I buried making music, too. I just kept myself destructively busy trying to pay off debt. When one of my favorite writers Liz Pelly recently was asked to be a curator for a @joyfulnoiserecs vinyl subscription series, a series intended to release overlooked albums for the first time on vinyl without owning any rights to the music, she contacted me to see if we could release The Only Thing. At this point I wasn’t even answering band e-mails. I didn’t want to touch anything record label related with a ten foot pole. I responded but it took me over a month to even fully read the first e-mail. But ultimately I agreed and I am so grateful for what feels more like an award than a release. I’m grateful to see a label trying different models, that really puts artists first and strives to test the limits. I also had to think about this album again, and finally deal with the emotions that it brings up. I hope to make music again soon, I feel it coming. I have 125 copies of this record to sell and all proceeds will go to me and if you order tomorrow on bandcamp Friday, they won’t take a cut. I am also selling wild harvested reishi tinctures in which all proceeds are going to the @theokraproject and @glits_inc (see last post). With its very precise attack, homogeneous timbre in every register, controlled high notes, warm and velvety sound, this new reed offers exceptional possibilities. Produced from cane selected for its specific proportions, the V•12 reeds have a thicker heel and are cut on a longer palette with a slightly thicker tip than the Traditional. The longer palette means that more of the reed is vibrating, resulting in a deeper, richer sound. First released on the French label BYG/Actuel in 1971, the companion volumes of The Solar-Myth Approach were essential in introducing Ras monumental program to an international audience. As with many Arkestra records, the information on these gatefold packages was dubious at best. Here they appear with corrected lineups and dates, showing that the music actually stretches back to the early 1960s, but was assembled into a beautiful chronological mosaic that serves as a gripping survey of early-post-Chicago Ra. Its an ideal way to start listening to his music, and for his fans absolutely essential items in the gargantuan discography. These LPs have been reissued a number of times since BYG/Actuel folded, and with each new batch the fidelity has diminished, so that theyve been a pale shadow of the original recordings. For the first time, the sound has been lovingly restored to a previously unimagined level of omniversal fidelity, and one track (Scene 1 Take 1) that was mastered at the wrong speed on the original -- perhaps a Ra idea, perhaps just a disconnect between the producers and the composer -- has been included as a bonus track remastered at the corrected speed.
