𝑻𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒛𝒛𝒂 Durante il Rinascimento i tondi erano, quasi esclusivamente, realizzati per uso privato e questo in particolare si pensa sia stato commissionato a Raffaello da Papa Leone X Medici per poi essere donato alla sua famiglia, a Firenze. La permanenza a Roma fa sì che Raffaello possa prendere spunto dallo stile michelangiolesco, come si può notare soprattutto nella fisicità del corpo del Bambino, sapientemente stemperata dal dolce stile dellurbinate. Il nome dellopera deriva dalla presenza della sedia (probabilmente quella ad uso esclusivo papale) dove è seduta la Madonna, la quale assume una posizione tenera e protesa verso il figlio e, con una gamba sollevata, ci esorta a pensare che lo stia cullando. Gesù bambino è il fulcro del quadro: dal suo gomito si dipana, immaginariamente, una spirale riscontrabile nelle curve presenti nellabbraccio della Vergine a suo figlio ed accentuate dalla sapiente alternanza di colori caldi e freddi utilizzati per dipingere le vesti dei personaggi. Ultimo protagonista dellopera è San Giovannino il quale affiora dalloscurità e porge alla Madonna una preghiera. Enea ferito L’affresco, in IV stile pompeiano, fu rinvenuto, nel triclinium della Casa di Sirico a Pompei. La pittura raffigura Enea mentre viene operato dal medico Japix, che cerca di estrarre con un forcipe o un bisturi la cuspide della freccia nemica conficcatasi nella coscia destra. L’affresco riprende l’episodio narrato da Virgilio nell’ultimo libro dell’Eneide, quando, in una battaglia contro i Rutuli sul suolo italico, l’eroe troiano venne ferito ad una coscia da una freccia vagante e fu costretto a ritirarsi accompagnato da Ascanio, Acate e Mnesteo. Realizzato da un pittore dalle scarse capacità artistiche, l’interesse maggiore della pittura sta soprattutto nel vedere un medico in atto di eseguire una vera e propria operazione chirurgica. Scheele’s green (copper arsenite) was discovered in 1778 by Karl Scheele, a Swedish chemist. Like the IKEA home furnishings of today, it was cheap and vibrant in colour and became extremely popular in the manufacture of a wide range of home goods in homes of all levels of wealth. Napoleons illness and death on St Helena have been the subject of controversy. His symptoms have been compared with those of arsenic poisoning1–3, and arsenic has been found in surviving samples of his hair4–8. During the nineteenth century, many people were accidentally poisoned by arsenical vapours from wallpaper9–11. Accordingly, it is an intriguing speculation that Napoleon may have ingested arsenic from his wallpaper. After presenting this speculation on a radio broadcast, one was offered an original sample of wallpaper from Napoleons residence on St Helena.It reported that X-ray fluorescence measurements on this paper reveal enough arsenic to be capable of causing illness but probably not death. La Madonna di Joris van der Paele è la più grande opera di Jan van Eyck (Maaseik, 1390 circa – Bruges, 1441) dopo il Polittico dell’Agnello mistico. L’opera fu realizzata tra il 1434 e il 1436 su incarico di Joris van der Paele (1370 circa – 1443), canonico della chiesa di San Donaziano, allora il principale edificio di culto di Bruges. Il dipinto raffigura una complessa struttura teologica fondata su diversi livelli di lettura e significato. Formalmente, la composizione ricorda un epitaffio: e in effetti, sia il dipinto sia l’eredità lasciata dal fondatore della cappella avevano lo scopo di tramandare la sua memoria. Sulla sinistra infatti vediamo san Donaziano che, in quanto santo titolare della collegiata di Bruges, viene collocato nella posizione gerarchica più importante, a destra di Maria. Di fronte a lui, a sinistra della Vergine, vediamo il donatore inginocchiato, e vestito con una tunica bianca, Joris van der Paele viene presentato da san Giorgio (suo santo eponimo, nonché patrono), raffigurato in una splendida armatura dorata, che riluce della grazia della Vergine e del Bambino. Già nel 1764 il colto abate Matteo Jacuzio, raccoglieva e disponeva, in un corridoio sito presso la portineria e il cosiddetto «Chiostro dei Corvi», un certo numero di marmi, in prevalenza di età classica o medioevale, corredandone la sistemazione con unepigrafe che ne celebrava il recupero. 🇩🇰 I dag er det 150 år siden, at Christian 10. kom til verden. Kort før midnat mandag den 26. september 1870 nedkom den 18-årige Kronprinsesse Lovisa med en søn på Charlottenlund Slot nord for København. Da solen næste dag stod op over København, var det til lyden af 21 salutskud fra Batteriet Sixtus på Holmen, der bekendtgjorde, at Danmark havde fået en ny tronarving. Nyheden om den kongelige fødsel spredte sig hurtigt i befolkningen, og i sin dagbog registrerede eventyrdigteren H.C. Andersen Prinsens ankomst med ordene: ”Saae en Ildkugle paa Himlen. Inat før 12 blev en Prinds født af Kronprindsessen, hele Byen flaggede i Dag i det smukke Veir”. Samme Andersen fik senere på året lejlighed til at forære den lille Prins sine illustrerede eventyr - ”det er vist nok den første Bog han har faaet” konstaterede den verdensberømte digter efterfølgende. I anledning af Christian 10.s 150-års fødselsdag frigiver Kongehuset en række billeder fra Kongens barndom. Derudover er det nu muligt offentligt at læse det fødselsbrev, som Kronprins Frederik (8.) i henhold til Kongelovens artikel 39 sendte til sin far, Christian 9., kort tid efter sønnens fødsel. Da Prins Christian (10.) kom til verden, havde hans farfar været konge af Danmark i næsten syv år. Der skulle dog gå 35 år, før han blev Kronprins, og derfra endnu seks år til han selv kunne bestige den danske trone som den tredje regent af den glücksborgske linje. Med valgsproget ”Min Gud, mit Land, min Ære regerede han Danmark fra 1912 og frem til 1947. Kongens regeringstid blev således indrammet af de to verdenskrige. Adham Khan Being Thrown from the Walls of Agra, from the `Akbarnama, Adham Khan (1531 – 16 May 1562) was a general of Akbar. He was the younger son of Maham Anga, he thus became the foster brother of Akbar. In his fourth regnal year, Akbar married him to Javeda Begum, the daughter of Baqi Khan Baqlani. In November, 1561 Akbars favourite general Ataga Khan, was appointed wakil (the prime minister), replacing Munim Khan. His appointment displeased Maham Anga. On May 16, 1562, Adham Khan accompanied by a few ruffians burst in upon him as he sat in the hall of audience and murdered him. Adham Khan then rushed to the inner apartment, where he was caught by Akbar, just roused from sleep by tumult. Akbar replied to Adham Khans explanation to palliate his crime by striking him down with a heavy blow of his fist. Adham was thrown down twice from the roof of a one storied building whose height was about 10 feet (which was possibly the reason why he had to be thrown down twice) by royal order and put to death. Akbar himself broke this news to Maham Anga, who made a simple but dignified reply that he did well. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, born in China in 1896, and later moving to the United States in 1905 with her missionary father, was the first Chinese woman to earn a PhD from Columbia University. Her dissertation was titled “The Economic History of China: With Special Reference to Agriculture.” Outside of academics, Mabel was also an active Suffragist. By the age of 16, she had joined the New York Suffrage Movement, where she helped lead a parade attended by 10,000 people in 1912. She argued that in order to have a successful democracy, women’s suffrage was necessary. Though women won the right to the vote with the 19th Amendment, due to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Chinese Americans continued to be barred from voting until it was rescinded in 1943. Only then was her fight for equal voting rights fulfilled. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment as well as the 55th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, we are honoring inspirational women throughout America’s history who have fought for the rights of the disenfranchised. This stunning watercolour was painted by the French artist Eugène Lami. Dated 1866, the work is characteristic of Lami’s richly coloured aristocratic scenes. The figures wear late seventeenth-century costume, and the setting recalls (but does not depict) the Staircase of the Ambassadors at Versailles, built in the 1670s; the scene does not seem to represent a particular historical event. I’ve been thinking about French painting a lot lately for a host of reasons, and this is definitely one of my absolute favorites. Despite being over five hundred and fifty years old, the right wing of the Melun Diptych is an extraordinarily “modern” work of art, a terrible cliché I usually avoid, but in this case find utterly unavoidable. It’s an exquisite study in geometry, from the perpendicular lines of the Virgin Mary’s marble-encrusted throne to the ovoid shape of her perfectly plucked head. And then there are the buoyant bodies of the red seraphim and blue cherubim (who incidentally have always reminded me, in the very best possible way, of juvenile versions of the Michelin Man as interpreted by Jeff Koons). The spheres, too, are remarkable, each as perfect as a little celestial orb—the angels’ heads, the iridescent pearls, and of course, the Virgin’s breasts. Impossibly spaced, one covered and the other bared to reveal its marble-like “flesh,” they are fantasy appendages for the Virgin in her otherworldly glory as Queen of Heaven. Although exposed to show its role as a source of sustenance for the Christ Child, the Virgin’s uncovered breast can hardly be mistaken for a real lactating breast. The intersection of divinity, woman and symbol takes a very memorable form here indeed, especially since tradition holds that Mary’s features were modelled on those of Agnes Sorel, mistress to King Charles VII… To conclude, I leave you with a passage from Clement Marot’s lengthy ode to the beautiful breast (“Blason du beau tetin”), first published in 1536: […] Breast that never moves, Neither to come, nor to go, Neither to run, nor to dance.
