#MTV said they were narrowcasting in 1983, meaning targeting a certain audience but thats not really what they were doing. They were narrow in selecting the artists and comfortably discriminating. It still happens today in 2020, only a different kind. BET was once accused of calling hip-hop group Little Brother too intelligent for their audience. A lot of labels and bigger media outlets often dont care about the depth of the music, just the numbers so theyll follow trends and formulas. This is understandable to a degree, theyre businesses, but its the innovative businesses that see long term success. #DavidBowie knew how to stay innovative. On Womens Equality Day, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment as part of the United States Constitution, which secured for women the right to vote. . Although their role is not well documented, women have been a vital part of the Y movement for over 175 years! Below are a few notable roles that women have had in the YMCA movement: . -In the mid-1800s, women served in unpaid roles in the YMCA movement including volunteer teachers and fundraisers. . -During WWI, over 5,000 women worked in military canteens and many led units of female war workers and volunteers. . -The YMCA gave soldiers a place where they could get away from the harsh realities of the war. They organized canteens at the front lines in France. The huts or tents at the front lines were run by “Secretaries,” who provided writing materials, stock libraries, and sometimes, a gramophone and records. . -After the war, women were finally invited to join the YMCA as members and they began entering the Y workforce in higher numbers. . -In 1976, YMCA of the USA appointed Violet King Henry to Executive Director to its Organizational Development Group, making her the first woman named to a senior management position. - @lakelandymca on Instagram

Born on this day in 1914: San Francisco native Esther Eng, who is regarded as the first woman to direct Chinese-language films in both the U.S. and Hong Kong. As reported by The Seattle Times in 1946, Eng embarked on a filmmaking career at a young age, “with no background for such a venture… went to Hollywood, rented a studio on Sunset Boulevard and made her first picture for Chinese markets here and in China.” An openly lesbian woman, Eng brought female-centric storytelling to the screen, including a film about a female pilot (NATIONAL HEROINE, 1937) and an all-actress film called WOMEN’S WORLD (1939), which ambitiously portrayed 36 women in different social spheres and professions. Dear Cinephiles, Fran Kubelik: Some people take, some people get took. And they know they’re getting took and there’s nothing they can do about it. There’s no denying the sense of gloominess that has overtaken our lives since last March. I’ve made a big point to aerosol it out of my mind as much as possible, but there are days that it just hangs there. A Billy Wilder film has always proven to be the right antidote for any malaise. His comedies in particular, dive into the ennui - his dark vision laced with the right amount of wit and hopefulness to pull you out and restore your faith in human kind. At a very young age, I developed a strong affinity for his romantic comedy “The Apartment” (1960) - and have visited it many times throughout my life. Last night, I was struck by how pertinent it feels to our current state of insecurity - and how this film should become a priority for all of us. Written by Billy Wilder with I.A.L. Diamond as a follow up to their wildly successful “Some Like It Hot” (1959), it tells the story of C.C. “Buddy Boy” Baxter (Lemmon) - an insurance employee for Consolidated Life in New York, who dreams of climbing the corporate ladder. He has agreed to a Mephistophelian deal wherein his apartment is used at night by four of his bosses to carry out extramarital affairs with the understanding that eventually he will get a promotion. Quite symbolically, the elevator that carries the executives to their higher floor is manned by Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) - and Baxter is smitten by her. She herself is engaged in a murky exchange in hopes of bettering her position in life. She has been having an affair with married man Jeff Sheldrake - who is the personnel director for the company. Unbeknownst of this, Baxter agrees to loan his apartment to Sheldrake to meet with Fran. Baxter’s next door neighbors think of him as a lothario because they hear the non-stop laughter and merriment coming out of his apartment. Ironically he spends most evenings alone wandering the streets. The action is contained within the hardest week for some of us - that which falls between Christmas and New Year’s... Hans-Joachim Marseille, The Star of Africa, the undisciplined man who believed that alcohol made him a better pilot and shot down 8 planes in 10 minutes. (Started a new great war page @faces_of_ww1 Please follow our page ) He was born in Berlin in 1919. Of French Huguenot descent, his father was an army general. He was a very weak and sickly child... a flu was about to take him to the grave His parents divorced when he was very young, which influenced his undisciplined, rebellious and independent character. He had a passion for flying,so he joined the Luftwaffe in 1938 at the age of 18, despite abhorring military life.Enlisting in peacetime led to full training. He was a lover of nightlife, of arriving very late to training sessions and he even considered that drinking alcohol made him a better pilot. The worst punishment he received was when the officers, fed up with his continuing indiscipline, despite proving to be an aviation ace in the Battle of Britain ... changed his unit and sent him to North Africa to fight the Allies. Marseille attacked in conditions that many considered unfavorable, but its marksmanship allowed it to make an approach fast enough to fire and be able to escape the shots that could be made by the two planes flying on both sides of its target. His excellent eyesight made him detect the enemy before he was discovered in turn, allowing him to take the appropriate measures to maneuver and thus be able to place himself in an optimal position for an attack. On June 3, 1942, he single-handedly attacked a formation of sixteen Curtiss P-40 fighters from No. 5 Squadron SAAF and shot down six aircraft, five of them in six minutes, including those of three aces Robin Pare, Douglas Golding and Andre Botha. September 1, 1942 was the day he achieved his greatest success as a fighter pilot, shooting down seventeen planes in one day, September being the month in which he achieved the most successes during his career, shooting down 54 enemy planes. the seventeen enemy planes shot down, eight were shot down in just ten minutes. Hey all, it’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these but I thought I’d give you a little updated #fridayintroduction I’m Justin, the less-beautiful half of Justin & Mary. A few things about me 1️⃣ So lately I’ve been working on some personal projects shooting #4x5film on my #gowlandflex twin lens. When we were in New Orleans last week I met another photographer named Valentine that was shooting some paper negatives in an 1800’s wet plate camera… and then he was developing them in a mini portable darkroom right there on the street! So he photographed me with my Gowlandflex, and I made a portrait of him. (more on that to come). 2️⃣ This past year I’ve also taken up Squash. It’s crazy! I played competitive racquetball in college but this is SO different! It’s been really fun and an amazing workout, but my record resembles that of the Cleveland Browns this year (as a Giants fan, I feel your pain!), but then again it’s only my first season and I’m playing against guys that have done this for years. 🏆3️⃣ I love our morning routine with @marymarantz and @attaboyatticus. With support from the Victorian Government, we are undertaking research into the loyal participation of #ChineseAustralian women and men in this war to produce a freshly researched book. As the National Archives Service Records are not yet fully digitised, we may not be able to obtain as much detailed history of these women and men, from official records, as we have with the #ChineseANZACS. Succeeding generations of these women and men may have personal memories, photographs and memorabilia of their service to Australia. WAR DIARY THE LAKE SUPERIOR REGIMENT (MOTOR) 28/06/1945 HENGELO Bright, clear and warm. Major H.G. Dawson, D.S.SO., assumed command of the bn in the absence of Lt.-Col. H.H.A. Parker proceeding on leave. Morning parades were held throughout the bn at 0900 hrs. Major R. Middleditch, Chief Rehabilitation officer, organized his rehab. lectures commencing at 1400 hrs today. Bath parades and sports were carried out during the afternoon. Large numbers of men took advantage of the fine weather in the evening to look the town over and become acquainted. The last battle was over for the Lake Superiors in World War Two. Afterwards, from May 8th to the 25th, the Lake Superiors had to serve as the occupying army in Varel, Germany. After this task - one disliked by the regiment - they where given rest in Holland, in the town of Hengalo. Here practically the whole battalion was billeted in civilian homes; and the long-awaited change-over from slit trenches to mattresses and spring beds was made. (In the Face of Danger, G. F. G. One amazing hero that we like to remember from that day is a veteran named Rick Rescorla. He served in Vietnam (Ia Drang Valley). In 1993, he led the WTC evacuation after terrorists detonated a bomb in the parking garage. On September 11th, 2001, he directed the evacuation of 2,700 Morgan Stanley employees and exerted a steady calm. He encouraged his colleagues reminding them that “Today is a day to be proud to be an American.
