Shoes are complete except for filling the cracks and some final sanding. Now for the pedestal. The outermost wood was very dead and not very attractive so I took off 3/4 of an inch to get to some firmer, better looking grain. On our way through the marginal ice zone we encountered a beautiful ice type: pancake ice. It emerges during an early stage of new ice formation from frazil ice, which consists of ice needles that stick together to grease ice. In this phase, swell is needed to let pancakes grow, as otherwise the ice would just form an even pattern and cover the ocean as so-called Nilas. But the swell makes the newly forming ice pieces colliding and theses collisions lead to more or less circular plates with usually padded edges. Continuing @l_d_f_official with @carpentersworkshopgallery and @paulcocksedge’s #SLUMP exhibition on view until 18th December. The acclaimed London-based designer uses industrial sheets of glass to create a collection of limited-edition and unique design through complex processes, giving the rigid, flat material an unexpected softness and fluidity. For the eight tables, the glass is stretched under high temperatures and ‘slumped’ over industrial and natural materials including concrete, steel, wood and rock. The glass reacts in different ways each time, creating one-of-a-kind pieces. The bases appear to under a surface of water, an effect that is emphasised in the Bubble table which is made of metal tubing and creates a soft drop-like surface. The Rock coffee table just out from a rock that gives the same allusion as a river running over a boulder. Cocksedge also uses patinated mild steel to give an added level of depth and texture, exploring how a solid industrial material can be altered through time and nature. Each piece is the result of collaboration with dozens of skilled craftspeople in the UK, utilising specialist techniques and machines. Cocksedge comments: ‘This body of work is a reaction to my long-standing fascination with industrially produced materials. Across the course of my career I’ve visited hundreds of factories, full of flat, rigid sheets of various materials - wood, metal, marble, stone or glass. I’ve always felt that this flatness has a visual tension, and I wanted to explore how to relax and soften that, giving the material space to breathe out. The pieces themselves are a simple visual gesture, but the processes behind them were complex. The challenge was how to transform something that’s been made flat and rework it, whilst avoiding putting ‘stress’ back into the glass.’ Loic Le Gaillard, co-founder of Carpenters Workshop Gallery adds: ‘We’re@back and have exciting plans for London this autumn.
