Constructed in 1898, this Memphis theater was originally named the Jefferson — even though it was located on Madison. Two years later, the name was changed to the Lyric, and it remained a popular vaudeville house until 1924, when it was used for YMCA meetings, dramatic clubs, and town hall gatherings. In its later years, it served as a movie theater, but it was never as popular as the more opulent movie palaces on Main Street. In 1941, the building burned in one of this city’s most spectacular blazes. Salvage crews tried to remove two statues of Greek maidens that adorned the entrance, but their chains slipped, and the sculptures crashed to the ground. Still, portions of the old theater have survived. One woman bought 60,000 of the fire-scorched bricks for a home she was building on South Parkway. A home-owner in East Memphis bought thousands of other bricks and used them to build a handsome wall around his home at Highland and Watauga, still standing today.   Photo courtesy Memphis and Shelby County Room, Benjamin L. The Atcheson / Folsom Home. 1895 In August of 1895, Lewis D. Folsom purchased a lot in the center of the 800 block of Center Street for $450. Here he built the stylish two-story, eight-room home at 829, with its typical Queen Anne adornments such as spindle trim above the porch and windows, and elegant turret with its fish scale roof. Born in Maine, Folsom had come to Nevada in 1874 and opened a store in Gold Hill. He met Mary Keville, who had come west from Massachusetts and the two married in Dayton. Ten years later they moved to Reno, where with a partner named Gallatin, Folsom bought out Jerry Schooling’s grocery business. The house was designed and built by architect George E. Holesworth, who that same year was appointed supervising architect for the University. It featured the latest conveniences including a modern range, gas and electric lights in every room, and a dumb waiter comprised of shelves that could be raised or lowered to the cellar at the push of a finger. The foundation was made of stone from a quarry north of Reno owned by Robert L. Fulton. The house’s completion was such a notable event that the newspaper raved in December of 1895, “in point of architectural beauty and modern convenience it is doubtful if there is another residence in town that can equal it.” Lewis died in 1918 but Mary Folsom remained in the Center Street home she loved for many more years. Around 1943, the home was purchased by Katie Atcheson. and was later passed down to her son Merle and his wife Mary, a talented and much-in-demand pianist. Their son Fred, a local attorney, occupied the house and continues to live there to this day. He divided the home into apartments and rented to university students. He sold the property to the University of Nevada, Reno in early 2016 and in 2019 it was announced that this property along with others in the Gateway District will be demolished to make way for UNR expansion. El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song “Memories of El Monte” written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins.⁣ ⁣ The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. ⁣ ⁣ The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it “El Monte Legion Stadium”⁣ ⁣ From 1945 through the mid 1950’s the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derby’s, and even mini car races. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ The stadium reached the apex of it’s popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. ⁣ ⁣ At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. ⁣ ⁣ Art Laboe’s dances at the Legion we’re extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. ⁣ ⁣ Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens.⁣ ⁣ By the 1960’s The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events.⁣ ⁣ In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. The stadium was torn down on Friday the 13th 1974. ⁣ ⁣ The Union Walk townhome development currently sits at the former site of the stadium at Valley and Ramona Blvd. ⁣ ⁣ A small fountain and plaque in front of the development memorializes the history that the Stadium made in EL Monte. - @elmonte.captured on Instagram

The Season 2 finale of the Story of Miami podcast is here! In 1896 we tell the story of how, despite all the odds, our wonderful city was officially born. Listen at the link in our bio, or stream on iTunes or your favorite podcast app. Scroll right for some incredible pictures, and check out the Episode 21 page on our website to see more. Pictured in this post: 1) This 1896 image faces north on Avenue D. The large two-story building with five windows above housed Willis Myers’ Lobby Pool and Billiard Parlor on its first floor. The second floor was the location of the incorporation meeting that brought the City of Miami into existence. 2) The grounds of Ft. Dallas, Julia Tuttle’s homestead, shortly before Flagler’s first visit. This image looks east towards the mouth of the Miami River and bay. The Brickells’ trading post is visible top right, across the river. 3) Makeshift huts in the woods near Tuttles property that were hastily constructed by 95ers who rushed into Miami after it was announced that a new Flagler town would be built at Miami. 4) This 1895 image depicts an “early view of 1st Street.” This may be either today’s S. 1st Street, in downtown, or N. 1st Street, two blocks farther north, or it may be the original “1st Street,” today known as N. 11th Street - the northern extremity of the planned city. 5) A family outside their home in 1896. 6) Early street scene on North Miami Avenue in 1896. 7) A view looking north on Avenue D, todays Miami Avenue, in 1896. 8) Group of people gathered on East Flagler Street at 1st Avenue in 1896. This was known as 12th Street at the time. 9) Groundbreaking ceremony for the Royal Palm Hotel at the north bank of the mouth of the Miami River. In the background stands the Brickells’ home and trading post. March 15, 1896. 10) The front page of the first issue of Miami’s first newspaper, the Miami Metropolis. Our family has gathered at this restaurant for 3 generations it’s now being put to rest. Christenings, birthdays, dates, weddings, our rehearsal dinner, funerals or for just honest food and drinks. Red sauce, keno, wood paneling, potato croquets, the type of place where when you ordered a espresso the bottle of anisette was set on the table. Maybe you’ve seen it in Scorsese’s “The Irishman”... red booths and framed oil paintings. beautifully frozen in time since 1936 when it first opened its doors selling pizza to my great grandparents. #TBT ➡️ Did you know that in the exact location where Footlocker is today, (corner of Fordham Rd & Valentine Ave), there used to be an F. W. Woolworths department store? The two brothers who founded the company, Frank & Charles Woolworth are credited with pioneering modern merchandising, direct purchasing, sales and customer service practices as we know them today in modern department stores. But, did you also know that before going out of business in 1997 they changed their name to Venator Group and focused entirely on sporting goods? The new company went on to formally adopt another name eventually becoming one of the worlds most widely known sports apparel companies which we all now know as Foot Locker! 😎 (source: Wikipedia) . . . #fordhamroadnyc #FordhamRoadHistory #thefordhamexperience #lifeonfordhamroad #fordhamlifestyles - @fordhamroadnyc on Instagram

Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. More information coming soon. Stay up to date with the event page on FB. ALSO: The important thing to remember is that Greenwood did rebuild and the events of 1921 are less than 1% of the districts long history. I will be sharing more of the renaissance and the effects of Urban Renewal soon.  #tulsa #tulsahistory #greenwood #okhistory #tulsaphotographer #tulsaphotography #thisisoklahoma #photography #compositephotography #history #1921 #racemassacre #blackwallstreet - @tulsapast on Instagram

Strolling through Greenville is like walking back in time. You wont see chain stores, or chain restaurants, or chain anything for that matter; most businesses in Greenville are locally owned. Few towns in California have the personality of Greenville. Aside from the well kept storefronts and building architecture ranging from the 1860s to the 1940s, Greenvilles rural setting alongside the Union Pacific railroad is what makes this town of 1,100 residents so endearing. Located in the northwest corner of the Indian Valley along California Highway 89, surrounded by towering timbered peaks on the northernmost fringe of the Sierra Nevada Range, Greenville is only nine miles from Lake Almanor and the start of the southern Cascade Range, home to Lassen National Park. Greenville was born in the 1860s amidst a quest for gold, but like many other Sierra Nevada frontier towns, as mining played out, logging and ranching grew, and to this day there are still ranches in the Indian Valley, some of which are generational dating back more than 100 years. Logging was prominent in Greenville, especially during World War II, when the appetite for lumber was insatiable. The influx of new residents to California in the 1950s escalated the demand. As a result, lumber and sawmills in Greenville operated around the clock, causing skies choked with smoke from the burning of scrap lumber. However, the economic future of places like Greenville depend greatly on tourism and recreation. Fortunately for local residents, Greenville and the Indian Valley area have no shortage of remote mountain beauty to share with visitors, and as a bonus, very few crowds. Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat.

In 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased this waterfront property in Centerport, NY as a getaway from the city and its social scene. Vanderbilt named his new estate “Eagle’s Nest” and had a small, 7-room English bungalow built overlooking the bay. By the 1930s though, after inheriting $23 million from his father, traveling around the world for his scientific expeditions, and marrying his second wife, Vanderbilt’s life had changed quite a bit, and the little house changed with him. From a small cottage, Eagle’s Nest grew into a sprawling 24-room Spanish Revival mansion. #tbt #vanderbilthistory ...
