Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. The owner, Henry LeBrun, was heavily involved in local sports and managed Peterborough’s very successful field lacrosse team for two decades! . 📷Peterborough Museum & Archives 2000-012-000360-1 . #throwbackthursday #tbt #ptbo #ptbocanada #coolsign #coolsignage #historicstorefront #downtownptbo #ptbohistory #heritage - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

The intersection of George Street and Brock Street looked very different 150 years ago. The building on the southwest corner was once an early example of the Second Empire style in Peterborough. It was owned by George A. Cox, who was a prominent businessman and politician. By the 1950s, the upper floors were removed, and the facade changed considerably. It’s hard to believe this is the same corner! 📷 Peterborough Museum & Archives DC161 - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. More information coming soon. Stay up to date with the event page on FB. ALSO: The important thing to remember is that Greenwood did rebuild and the events of 1921 are less than 1% of the districts long history. I will be sharing more of the renaissance and the effects of Urban Renewal soon.  #tulsa #tulsahistory #greenwood #okhistory #tulsaphotographer #tulsaphotography #thisisoklahoma #photography #compositephotography #history #1921 #racemassacre #blackwallstreet - @tulsapast on Instagram

Seen here in our #TBT photo from 1940, a soda jerk takes a smoke break outside Parkview Drugs, long-time pharmacy and general store at the corner of what was then 63rd and Wyandotte. Swipe for a 1957 KC Star ad touting a 6 pack of Pepsi (in the new single-drink size) for just a quarter! If the art deco style looks vaguely familiar, it absolutely is. This is now the corner of 63rd and Brookside Plaza looking southeast. Currently home of @panerabread Brookside, the drug store sign can still be seen on the top of the building but is rarely noticed unless you are looking up. Many unique Brookside features like this sign are hidden in plain sight. Visit the historic Brookside shops to see if you can find more. The Season 2 finale of the Story of Miami podcast is here! In 1896 we tell the story of how, despite all the odds, our wonderful city was officially born. Listen at the link in our bio, or stream on iTunes or your favorite podcast app. Scroll right for some incredible pictures, and check out the Episode 21 page on our website to see more. Pictured in this post: 1) This 1896 image faces north on Avenue D. The large two-story building with five windows above housed Willis Myers’ Lobby Pool and Billiard Parlor on its first floor. The second floor was the location of the incorporation meeting that brought the City of Miami into existence. 2) The grounds of Ft. Dallas, Julia Tuttle’s homestead, shortly before Flagler’s first visit. This image looks east towards the mouth of the Miami River and bay. The Brickells’ trading post is visible top right, across the river. 3) Makeshift huts in the woods near Tuttles property that were hastily constructed by 95ers who rushed into Miami after it was announced that a new Flagler town would be built at Miami. 4) This 1895 image depicts an “early view of 1st Street.” This may be either today’s S. 1st Street, in downtown, or N. 1st Street, two blocks farther north, or it may be the original “1st Street,” today known as N. 11th Street - the northern extremity of the planned city. 5) A family outside their home in 1896. 6) Early street scene on North Miami Avenue in 1896. 7) A view looking north on Avenue D, todays Miami Avenue, in 1896. 8) Group of people gathered on East Flagler Street at 1st Avenue in 1896. This was known as 12th Street at the time. 9) Groundbreaking ceremony for the Royal Palm Hotel at the north bank of the mouth of the Miami River. In the background stands the Brickells’ home and trading post. March 15, 1896. 10) The front page of the first issue of Miami’s first newspaper, the Miami Metropolis. - A slave dealer in Alexandria, Virginia, 1861-65. [636 x 429]

Established in 1860 and incorporated in 1885. The complex stretched along 5th Street between Grand, Clinton, and Willow. ✏ The company was famous for their Venus Pencil. A pencil that was made in 17 different degrees, from the very softest to the very hardest degree. The company even changed their name to Venus Pen & Pencil Company in 1956. ✏ In 1963, operations in Hoboken were coming to a halt. Antiquated buildings, taxes and old machinery were all factors to the companys relocation. 600-700 union textile workers (77a) were made aware of the change and efforts were made to keep operations in Hoboken. ✏ The efforts were fruitless, and later that year the company moved out of Hoboken. Almost immediately, the complex was demolished to make room for residential towers, known as Church Towers. Today the company is a subsidy of a German pencil company called Faber-Castell. ✏ #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #AmericanLeadPencil #PencilHistory - @hobokenhistory on Instagram

#200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. In doing this, they unknowingly created a world-class healthcare system. #ClevelandHistory #PresbyterianChurch #Bicentennial 📸: Courtesy of University Hospitals - @oldstonechurchcle on Instagram

Fast forward 2 years to 1935 and the Silver Tray moved to 604 Front Street which is the current home to @babbscoffeehouse! The Silver Tray moved a third time to NP between 1939 and 1940. The final move happened in 1947 to 408 Broadway along with a name change to the Silver Tray Tavern around 1954. Louis Hoffman purchased the cafe from Solow and closed in 1976. Constructed in 1898, this Memphis theater was originally named the Jefferson — even though it was located on Madison. Two years later, the name was changed to the Lyric, and it remained a popular vaudeville house until 1924, when it was used for YMCA meetings, dramatic clubs, and town hall gatherings. In its later years, it served as a movie theater, but it was never as popular as the more opulent movie palaces on Main Street. In 1941, the building burned in one of this city’s most spectacular blazes. Salvage crews tried to remove two statues of Greek maidens that adorned the entrance, but their chains slipped, and the sculptures crashed to the ground. Still, portions of the old theater have survived. One woman bought 60,000 of the fire-scorched bricks for a home she was building on South Parkway. A home-owner in East Memphis bought thousands of other bricks and used them to build a handsome wall around his home at Highland and Watauga, still standing today.   Photo courtesy Memphis and Shelby County Room, Benjamin L. RIP to the Santa Fe Hotel. The two-story solid brick building that stands today at 235 Lake Street is not the original Santa Fe Hotel, although it is located on the same site. The building housing the first Santa Fe was constructed there in 1913 for a man named A.J. Clark, and its second floor served as a hotel under various names including the Colombo Hotel before becoming the Santa Fe Hotel in the mid-1920s. Lake Street at the time was filled with small hotels, which all enjoyed close proximity to Reno’s train depot, one block north on Commercial Row. Basque immigrant Jean Pierre Etcheberry, already successful in the sheep business, took over the hotel lease in 1931. Etcheberry had arrived in the United States in 1910 and, along with his wife Marie, owned and operated the hotel until his death in 1943, when Marie took on Martin Esain as a partner. Under their management, the Santa Fe promised Basque immigrants traveling to the new country a friendly place to meet, a familiar language, a cozy bed, and a hearty traditional dinner. A terrible fire swept along Lake Street on August 15, 1948, damaging many buildings including the Santa Fe. Five people were killed in the fire, including three firefighters, one of whom was Frank Hobson, chief of the Sparks fire department. The old Santa Fe Hotel was condemned by the city and Esain, by now the sole owner, constructed a new hotel building in 1949, with commercial and restaurant spaces on the ground floor, including a barber shop, and 22 rooms above. Esain’s nephew, Joseph Zubillaga, and Zubillaga’s sisters Aurelie and Anita, helped their uncle run the Santa Fe over the next decades, taking over its operation when Esain died in 1966. The new Santa Fe Hotel continued to serve the community, including many local sheepherders and Basques, until the 1960s, when the immigration of Basque people sharply declined. Bill Harrah and Harrah’s Casino attempted to acquire the hotel and the land many times but the owners of the Santa Fe were not interested. All the other businesses near the Santa Fe did sell to Harrah, however, so Harrah’s Casino was simply built around them. They closed their doors yesterday after a long legacy. - @renohistorical on Instagram

Our family has gathered at this restaurant for 3 generations it’s now being put to rest. Christenings, birthdays, dates, weddings, our rehearsal dinner, funerals or for just honest food and drinks. Red sauce, keno, wood paneling, potato croquets, the type of place where when you ordered a espresso the bottle of anisette was set on the table. Maybe you’ve seen it in Scorsese’s “The Irishman”... red booths and framed oil paintings. beautifully frozen in time since 1936 when it first opened its doors selling pizza to my great grandparents. Carol Ceraldi said it, “a death in the family”. We want to extend sincere gratitude to the Colandrea family and to our customers that have supported us during this time of metamorphosis. Lets go to the Lyons House in Carberry for this #ManitobaMonday! This building was built during the 1890s with a combination of Italianate and Queen Anne structure styles. The politician Robert Fern Lyons and his family were first to occupy the home. Sadly, this grand home is now vacant and crumbling, wishing for someone to restore it back to its former glory. 📸 Carberry Plains Museum #carberry #Manitoba #threatenedheritage #historichome #heritage #buildinghistory - @heritagewpg on Instagram

#TBT to 1955 when the Country Club Line went right through Brookside. You could ride the streetcar line from Waldo to downtown and back through most of the 1950s. Runners today can thank late Missouri Senator Harry Wiggins for securing funding and conversion of the streetcar line into what we call the Trolley Trail today. ☀️This summer we’ve gotten very little rain: Let’s take a look back 99 years, when #GlendaleAZ saw #historic flooding after a major downpour.  Flooding extended from Phoenix to Glendale as Cave Creek overflowed and dumped water into Grand and Arizona Canals. 📷: The photo was taken looking south on 58th Drive towards Grand from Glendale. The R.F. Stauffer Building no longer stands, the Valley Bank Building is all that remains standing today. #throwbackthursday - @glendaleaz on Instagram

PUBLIC NOTICE: The Higgins Avenue Bridge construction will be starting in one week, on Monday, Oct. 5. In the first phase, Sletten Construction crews will replace the existing bridge deck to widen the travel surface. Crews will begin construction on the west side of the bridge, nearest to the Wilma building. While construction is underway, travelers will be able to use one lane in each direction on the east side of the bridge which currently carries the northbound lanes. This first phase of construction is anticipated to last through May 2021. Once the west half of the bridge has been completed next spring, traffic will be swapped to the newly completed segment of the bridge while crews construct the northbound lanes. This second phase will run from May 2021 through December 2021. This process will look very similar to what crews recently completed on the Russell Street Bridge. Throughout the duration of this project, various roadway and sidewalk improvements will be made at each end of the bridge. Along the west side of the bridge, new foundations will be installed to allow for a wider bridge deck, in addition to new shared-use paths, and a new stairway to Caras Park. The goal is to have all lanes of the bridge complete by the end of 2021 and to complete final paving, painting, striping, etc. in the spring of 2022. #downtownmissoula #missoula - @missouladowntown on Instagram

We survived our #blackhistory then, and by God’s Grace WE WILL SURVIVE COVID-19 in 2020🙏🏽🙌🏽 The Chicken Box opened its doors on Pine Street (now Roxboro) in 1957 under proprietorship of Claiborne Tapp, Jr. The business during its Pine Street location was challenged with what many other small black owned businesses faced - the need to relocate, inadequate funds, reestablishment in unfamiliar territories, and the need to shut down while rebuilding. Urban Renewal (“black removal”) wiped out many black businesses along Pine Street, Fayetteville, and Pettigrew along with surrounding, supporting residential neighborhoods. Regrettably the perceived goal of Urban Renewal failed many small black enterprises leaving them in a devastating plight. One of the few Pine Street enterprises to survive was The Chicken Box. In 1976, the Tapp family business relocated to its present location, 3019 Fayetteville Street, with the name being changed to The Chicken Hut. #durhamnc #community #familybusiness #legacy #communitylove #thelegacycontinues @durhamnc150 #abc11together #teach #supportingourcommunity #vote #swipeleft - @chickenhutdurham on Instagram

Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat.
