These are the 2 biggest mistakes I see everyday when people are trying to lose weight. . #1 You cut calories but due to the energy deficiency you unnoticeably sit more, fidget less, walk less, skip exercise more and just become more sedentary. This will very quickly push you out of that calorie deficit you thought you created. . #2 You start exercising, start going on walks or jogs, you go hiking with friends more, you spend less time on your phone and more time on your feet. Due to the increase of daily activity and movement you then think you “deserve” a muffin with your next coffee order. When we talk about call-in versus call-out strategies, the debate often becomes moralistic - Calling out is bad because it creates division and disposability! Calling in doesnt center the survivors of violence and is too easy on perpetrators! However, different strategies serve different purposes, and may be more or less appropriate depending on the situation and ones personal ethical values. I am personally committed to a mostly de-escalatory paradigm. However, de-escalation is not always possible or desirable for everyone, particularly in situations where power is being abused. Structured risk mapping feels useful because it allows us to pause and think through the strengths and flaws of each strategy for a given situation. My own belief is that the red zone strategies in this diagram are usually most appropriate when used to push against large systems and institutions of power where human rights atrocities are being committed. I think of yellow zone strategies as effective at pushing leaders to stop pursuing a particular course of action, or when a person in the community has committed a very serious harm. And I think of green zone strategies as being most desirable for the vast majority of interpersonal conflicts. However, others may have other valid perspectives. One issue that is very important to me is the relative survivability of each level of conflict escalation. The potentially harmful impacts of each kind of strategy are mediated by power. When we use red or yellow strategies against CEOs, millionaires, and politicians, their power usually allow them to evade serious consequences. But when we use them against vulnerable people, escalatory strategies have the potential to cause permanent harm, or even death, and these outcomes are often beyond our control. I think it’s up to each person to decide for themselves when and whether escalation or de-escalation is the more desirable strategy. Hindi is not our national language but in spite of that, it has played a big role in allowing our citizens to communicate and participate in cultural exchange - just like English has. The standard Hindi we speak today is technically called Manak Hindi which was heavily drawn from the Khariboli dialect spoken in Delhi, West UP, and parts of Haryana (Rohilkhand region). This dialect was also called as Kauravi or Dehlavi in the past. It is this dialect that gave birth to both Hindi and Urdu. India is a dialect continuum meaning there are no discrete dialects - they vary like liquid merging and mixing - so categorizing dialects will always be approximate. Yet if we try to see if a linguistic history exists or not between Hindi and the dialect, we see that some dialects like Haryanvi, Awadhi, Kannauji - all are indeed linguistic dialects - all evolving from Western Shauraseni Prakrit. Then, there are dialects which actually do not share the same parent as Hindi but are still referred to as her dialects. For example, Bhojpuri and Magahi are all related closer to Bengali, Odia, and Assamese and not Hindi (as they originate from Magadhi Prakrit and not Shauraseni Prakrit) Similarly, Rajasthani languages like Marwari and Mewari are closer to Gujarati than they are to Hindi. Pahari languages also like Garhwali, Kumaoni, Kangri, Kullavi are all closer to Eastern Pahadi (like Nepali) than they are to Hindi. Urdu also is a separate language from Hindi for political reasons. It is more related to Hindi structurally than several dialects of Hindi are to Hindi. If one allows Urdu to be considered a dialect of Hindi - even her dialects like Rekhta and Dakini could be considered to be Hindis dialects. Tomorrow is world suicide prevention day. Suicide can still be a taboo subject but nearly everyone had been affected or knows someone who has been affected by suicide. It very important that we talk about this and have as much knowledge about this as we can, through evidence based information based on good quality research and through the stories of people with experience. I’m proud to have contributed this drawing for @afspnational last year for their real convo campaign which aimed to open up conversation about mental health so that people feel supported and to reduce isolation and hopelessness. We can often be scared to ask about mental health in case it makes things worse, feels awkward or we just don’t know what to say. And we can often feel scared to talk about our own mental health as it seems shameful, we are worried it may affect the other Person or what they think of us (amongst other reasons). This drawing was part of the campaign and aimed to help give some tips and ideas to help people feel more confident in being able to open these conversations up and offer a safe space when people need it. If you are affected by these issues then there is good information about what you can do and the help available on @afsp (USA) @papyrus_uk (UK) and @samaritanscharity which is available in most countries. PCOS is a hormonal condition where the body produces too many androgens, or male hormones. This causes problems like irregular and super painful periods, insulin resistance, and ovarian cysts for many (but not all) of people with PCOS and a lot of other symptoms.⠀ ⠀ My wife has #PCOS and its weve had so many discussions about how difficult it is not only on a physical level - but an emotional/mental one as well, which has been the hardest for her. ⠀ ⠀ PCOS often comes along with hirsutism, or excessive hair growth. Some people with PCOS can grow facial hair, even full beards (she can, and its a mighty fine looking one! One of the positives of wearing a mask out in public is less shaving!) But when she was younger shed shave her face twice a day just so that no one would see.⠀ ⠀ So many of the symptoms have a HUGE impact on your self-esteem and your body image and they arent often talked about. Infertility is probably the most talked about symptom but there are so many others. Hair growth on arms backs, chest, and stomach. Skin tags, acne, and dark patches of skin are also signs of PCOS, as well as weight gain and difficulty losing weight. One of the most interesting benefits of @unlocklevels real time glucose monitoring is being able to watch the body do its thing. . Exercise can significantly increase energy use and our bodies will manage the demand differently depending on how intense the exercise is. . Check out these two examples from my exercise logs in the @unlocklevels app. . 📉Lower intensity exercise like a slow and steady run typically means a steady decrease in my glucose levels as my body chooses to use my readily available glucose and fat stores. . 📈When the intensity is high, fat can’t be used efficiently for energy so glucose is the only reliable energy source. Under this extreme stress, hormones like Cortisol and Epinephrine (adrenaline) are released which signal to the liver to flood the blood with glucose from stored glycogen and produce new glucose. This is a “fight or flight” response which is the body’s way of making sure we have the energy available to make it out of this intense situation no matter what. . *Glucose spikes from high intensity exercise are very different physiologically from spikes caused by sugary foods.* . Both kinds of exercise have their place and are demonstrated to have health benefits including improved insulin sensitivity for long periods afterward. . 🔺Progression Principles🔺 ⠀⠀ Consistently applying a principle based approach to training & rehab is at the core of what makes a great coach or therapist. Understanding these fundamental principles will allow you to scale & adjust appropriately for any client that comes into your gym or clinic. ⠀⠀ 🔹Load: Begin by teaching clients unloaded variations & progressively add load as they demonstrate mastery. Don’t forget that the clients own bodyweight may be adequate for progressive overload in the early stages. ⠀⠀ 🔹Speed: Progress the client along the velocity spectrum as they develop. Begin with Isometric/Eccentric movements to develop stability prior to progressing into dynamic variations. An example of this would be developing strength in the hinge pattern with a deadlift before progressing to a kettlebell swing. Similarly, we should develop traditional lower body strength with squats/split squats to support higher velocity movements like running, hopping and bounding. ⠀ 🔹Support: Help beginners with assistance devices like a TRX or a Dowel. Progress from the ground up moving from positions that are more stable (Supine/Prone) to positions that are less stable (1/2 Kneeling/Standing). ⠀⠀⠀ 🔹Volume: De-conditioned clients will have less tolerance to volume than more advanced trainees. Start with less volume to ensure mastery/limit soreness & progressively introduce more volume as they get stronger. ⠀⠀ 🔹Frequency: Reduced frequency to a stressor allows the client to adequately recover in between bouts. Practically, this might mean dosing knee dominant exercise or running only once per week following a knee injury & gradually introducing more as the clients capacity increases. ⠀⠀ 🔹Recovery: Progressively challenge the clients work capacity by moving from complete recovery to incomplete recovery. Novices may require full rest between sets to maintain adequate form & strength/power output. As their fitness levels increase you can begin challenging them by decreasing the work:rest ratio. ⠀⠀ Although these approaches may seem obvious it can’t be overstated how vital it is for coaches & therapists to understand these concepts and apply them consistently. #cfsc - @movementasmedicine on Instagram

I had seen a similar dopamine Vs Serotonin post being shared on Instagram where dopamine was portrayed just as this bad chemical responsible for addiction. Dopamine is essentially the chemical of motivation, what makes you do things, and while it can indeed motivate you to do unhealthy things and be linked to addiction it is also what gives you the drive to achieve great things, what runs through your brain in the morning when you wake up and feel like taking over the world. Dopamine is what makes you feel alive and often gives meaning to life. Anyway the goal is to balance your life with dopamine moments and serotonin moments and oxytocin moments, and know how to optimize these chemicals and use them to bring a more complete fulfilled happy life. - @happiness.lab on Instagram
