On 10/9/2020 #SCOTUS will #Conference and decide if our case has value and grant our petition cert. We need to make some noise before then and help Alexis, our other plaintiffs, and all those affected by the unconstitutional criminalization of cannabis. In one fell swoop, #SCOTUS can repair racial inequities, protect #Statesrights, redress #constitutional injuries, and grant #access to #lifesaving #medicine. As the media focuses on how Justice Ginsburg’s passing may affect SCOTUS’s jurisprudence on abortion rights and the Affordable Care Act, no one is focusing on marijuana legalization. Legalization legislation died in the House this past week, and, even if it were to pass the House, it has no prospects in the Senate. Seven members of Congress filed an amicus brief with SCOTUS – one of nine briefs filed in support of our appeal – explaining that legalization legislation in Congress will never pass. The only path forward is in the courts. SCOTUS is the last hope for Alexis and other medical marijuana patients around the country. Before she died, Justice Ginsburg, was an advocate for the right of patients to obtain access to lifesaving treatment. She was expected to be a critical vote in support of our position. While we continue to believe that the Justices will grant our appeal, it’s important for the media to consider how Justice Ginsburg’s passing may affect that process. Lurking~ They always tagged along with me everywhere, I was never left alone and I was okay with it. They were just possessive. WE ARE BACK It’s been 168 days since we last spoke, since the magazine paused printing just after lockdown, and I hope that ES Magazine’s return this week is an optimistic salvo, a sign that London is rebuilding in a new way and that the best bits (aka your favourite weekly) will remain. We return to your streets and homes with our biannual fashion edition, packed with new ideas on dressing for our new lives (cosier, more sustainable and locally made), interviews with fashion icons and industry start-ups. There’s a hit of Insta humour with @jtfirstman, and @raven__smith — king of an exquisite turn of phrase — writes about the power of pearls. Turn to page 44 for an essay by @afuahirsch on her personal journey through identity and fashion. Neighbourhood and localisation is a theme that traverses this issue — see Double Bubble, a tale of lockdown neighbours, friends and lovers, on page 30. The cover was created for us by @wolfgang_tillmans, the London-based Europhile artist, photographer and activist. For me his work is about togetherness and possibility and during these times I believe that our culture, our creativity and our faith in the power of our communities will endure. I collaborated with him specifically for this week’s edition because I could think of no one better to articulate the way I feel about bringing you the first ES Magazine since lockdown, and my last as editor in chief. To a loss which changed my life, So many times as human beings we are taught that life is all about moving on. The beautiful carriage of life never stops even after the departure of a soul. But if we look at the deeper prospect of it, we tend to find many anomalies. Once Anne Stael brilliantly stated, We understand death only after it has placed its hands on someone we love. Death and life are so close yet so far apart. While Death being the inevitable and Life being a ship sailing in the storms. So why dont we embrace death? The death of loved ones or even the death of our soul? Perhaps because the loss which it gives us, eats up a part of our soul. When I was 8, I lost my mother. And since then I never left complete, no matter who entered my life. Too naive to understand how and when it happened but too sensitive enough to still cry over it. She suffered from a chronic heart disease and we didnt have the financial resources for her treatment. All my childhood I cursed my father for not saving her, only to understand when I grew up that he sold each of his belongings for her. He was losing a soulmate while I was losing my support strength. Today, Im well settled and able enough to pay my own bills, but a void still remains. The void of my mom caressing my forehead, scolding me when I couldnt remember tables of seven and saving me whenever I broke the window pane. No doubt, the loss made me strong but it made me weak too. I refrain from believing on attachments now as I keep myself away from the crowd. The Bhagavad Gita so beautifully explains the reincarnation of ones soul and how it migrates from one body to another. If its true, I would be craving to have a glimpse of my mother again. The comfort which possesses in seeing her smile easily outshines all materialistic things. Oh Almighty! I end with one simple question for you, If you have to take people away, why you bring them in our lives at the first place? From, A broken soul. But more importantly, My mother tongue- It is made of bits and pieces of tradition and culture and rules that dictate my life. And at the end of the day, My mother tongue is my only source of absolution, And my mother land’s only constitution. By which I mean to say, “Ab lakda hai, keh bhi kya sakte hai”, Is the standard sentence to most social sins. Maybe I deface my mother tongue too much, Or maybe not enough. Nonetheless, My mother tongue chokes me more and more everyday. Its plagues newspapers and media outlets and every inch of my mother land.
