Hi everyone! Just felt like writing with some little life updates 3 As of today, Im 25 weeks pregnant! Unbelievable. Cant believe how fast this whole thing has gone :o Baby Blue is getting bigger and stronger by the day - not messing around at all with these kicks! Im in PT now for some gnarly pregnancy-related hip pain. But dont worry. My wife is taking great care of me :) I think were both enjoying the process so far, and we sure love seeing our baby grow.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Alex and I have been trying to take extra good care of our bodies and spirits these days. Lots of cooking, lots of yoga, getting excited for lots of walking as the weather cools down. Ive been trying to continue to limit my time on social media, which is absolutely necessary for my health and well-being - trying to schedule posts as often as possible, and desperately trying not to start my day with screens because I know if I start the day that way, its how I spend the whole day. Sigh.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im missing my grandma and wishing my family was closer. Grief comes and goes. Im struggling with quarantine boredom, and Im also enjoying the pace at which we are getting to spend our last months just the two of us. Ive read a handful of British murder mysteries recently, which I almost always enjoy. Been listening to a lot of On Being and Poetry Unbound, and weve been binging Denzel movies for the last week which has been super fun.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The challenge is really in trying to be present for all of this and then some. Hoy cumplo 30 años, ¡si 30! Y cuando uno es niño se imagina a esta edad, con hijos, esposo, una casona y vestirse todo formalito como un señor. Yo hoy no tengo nada de eso, tengo cosas mucho más importantes de las que estoy y soy consciente, una familia chiquita y maravillosa que formé con Arturo hace 5 años, a mis papás sorprendiéndome con regalos como suéteres de abuelita que saben que me hacen feliz y despertándome con una bocina por la ventana con las mañanitas (como Dios manda). Los 30 años los recibo con el pelo rosa, por que a las 18 era más fácil tomar esa tipo de decisiones alocadas que no importaban tanto por que eras joven, pero que tampoco importan ahora por que solo hay una vida. Hoy me la pasé entre risas y llanto, pero en su mayoría feliz y taaaaan agradecida con todas las personas lindas que me rodean, por mi familia, mi familia Ejuteca tan linda, tan humilde, tan sabia y mi familia Tica, tan positiva, tan humana, tan libre, gracias por que por ellos me he formado así, por que ese contraste y equilibrio me ha traído a donde estoy hoy. I can remember in 4th grade my mom taking my older brother to get his hair braided. One day I decided I’d like to try it. The pain I felt with every row became unbearable. I’m still not sure if she was heavy handed or I was just that tender headed, either way very light-skinned of me! 😂 Half way through I was able to go look in the mirror to see if I wanted to continue. When I looked in the mirror all I saw were little blonde braids ( I had blonde roots when I was younger). It didn’t look cool like my brothers hair (he had jet black hair) and I was sure the kids at school would make fun of me. 😫😭I was bullied but I was also coming into my queerness and had very bad self esteem issues. I had the hairstylist (one of my cousins) take them out and I didn’t try them till much later. It’s my birthday! When I was a kid my parents had to shave my head because I had lice. Many treated me as if it were a sad occasion and said “I still looked pretty” to encourage and make me feel better. What they didn’t know is that I was GLOWING. I loved this “error” and relished in the feel of the wind through each short little fibre. I didn’t feel short hair was masculine or feminine. I just felt it was me. The true form of expression I felt most comfortable in. It was joy. Fast forward to the now and I find myself entangled in everything from environmental to sociopolitical justice. (See my story for the year in review). Yet entangled is not a hairbrush or comb. The efficiency of short hair has lead beyond gender expectations- and gains me approximately 11.5 minutes a day (according to stats in Cosmo) in less grooming time. And I get to spend that time on You. Responding. Holding. Loving. Being present. It’s not a statement of my desire to be treated “like a man”. I’ll always desire to be treated like a me. Accountable to myself and my own actions. Not the history of those who have come before me. It’s just an extension of truth and comfort. While others are not necessarily comfortable with my existence as it is- I don’t equate my comfort to theirs. Their comments, questions and curiosities don’t factor into my own empowerment. I may lose them. But I’ve got You. And You are everything. This year I’ve had the privilege to listen. Learn. Grow. It’s been painful at times and humbling. There was a period I wasn’t sure I wanted to fight through it last year. But after so much time alone a community came together this year. Even when I laid myself bare to the world there were those who’s love was unwavering. Because of You I lived. I fought. I loved. Thank You. Thank You. Because of You and Your support I’ve felt empowered to say over 20k “I love You”s. I had over 800 people come out privately, over 8500 DMs (even oppositional) responded to. Over 4000 calling to the hotline and almost 880 hugs given this year. (Pre-Covid). This new year I am grateful to spend with You. We are team Queerगढ़ we started with a random thought which actually grew to a huge initiative, and by the time we decided to organize the very first queer pride march of Chhattisgarh which happened in Raipur, yes it was Raipur which witnessed the very first in the history, queer pride march 2019. The pride march Raipur was actually the pride of every LGBTQ community member of Chhattisgarh and beyond. It was overwhelming to watch the efforts of every individual who contributed inch to inch, second to second, every bit of themselves into this pride march and making it a huge success even after the heavy rain. To the world, it was just another queer pride march, but for us, it was an empowering phenomenon. It brought the community together as a family, it got us the allies. Raipur queer pride march witnessed unexpected support and love from everyone. There were great challenges in getting the march organized, which kept coming even on the pride day. We were severely hit by the torrential rains, derailing much of our timelines. Even in the rains, we saw unity ।n everyone holding the 2.5kms giant rainbow flag, and walking towards the destination getting wet and not caring about the rains. It was the greatest display of a sense of love, unity, and determination for change. Thank you so much for your love and support. Fifty. Here you are, right on time & not a day sooner. This day seemed SO far away once upon a time, and yet, here we are. I remember my father’s 50th birthday party like it was yesterday (if yesterday were 37 years ago). Fifty seemed SO old to me, yet I look at his photo from that night and think of how young, dynamic, hopeful, and HAPPY he looked. Still does, if you ask me. And you know? I FEEL the way he looked in that photo. Birthdays will hit harder this year, they say, due to all that we’ve been through during this “unprecedented” time we’re in. Will they? I personally feel the opposite; that this birthday signifies more than simply a new year, but being privileged to get another actual day on the books. Normally Im not the happy birthday to me, heres my post type, but this one feels warranted. Grateful. Healthy. Happy. Sane (mostly). My 49th year brought with it many things that I’d never have dreamed of. An Emmy nomination. A global pandemic. Being apart since March from the love of my life (who’s quarantining in Detroit with his sweet mama, but back soon!). A Great Awakening. Showing up fully. Going within as we went “without”. Being six feet apart, but feeling oddly more connected than ever. A deep appreciation for my internal space as well as my external surroundings. Friends. Family. Work. All present in their own ways. The challenging times? Oh, they’ve been the greatest teachers. The good times have been pretty darned awesome, too. I’ve learned to expect the unexpected, and place no attachment to outcome. I am so glad I never followed a ‘traditional’ path; that I am truly on my perfect one, with all its imperfections. When we make the choice to look inside instead of outside for answers, our world opens up and my world is a pretty rad place, if I may say so myself. For that I sit in gratitude. Thank you, gentle readers, for being a part of this journey. To know that during some of the toughest financial times of my life I was paying more in federal taxes than president trump was, is nauseating to me. like in 2006 when I payed for college working two jobs at pathmark and at California pizza kitchen I was paying more to pave these streets than Donald Trump. Or like in 2013 when I worked dinner shifts at Louises trattoria and then overnights (midnight-6am) at Mel’s drive in on sunset So I could pay off a hospital bill, I was paying more to keep our youths schools lights on. Or like in 2016 when I was living out of my car and couch surfing for months from friends apt to friends apt working odd jobs even then I was paying more in federal taxes to keep our veterans cared for after they come back from war, which I also paid more for in federal tax Dollars then president trump did. When will it sink in to some people’s minds that He doesn’t care about you. he doesn’t care about me. AND HE NEVER WILL. All he cares about is money in his pocket. He doesn’t care about your needs, your, struggles your hardships or whatever challenging roads you’ve been down. Hell he hasn’t even contributed one cent in paving them.
