“Dreams from the Edge” is a story about a young Black woman feeling free to dream and releasing the freedom of past generations. I wrote the short film and the song to help young Black girls feel anything was possible. I wanted to let them know it was okay to be yourself. I didn’t realize my daughter would sing this song yesterday against the backdrop of the Breonna Taylor verdict and I can’t help but to think of Breonna tonight. She had so many dreams, she was just a young woman not much older than my daughter and her life mattered. Her mommy loved her too. Praying for my hometown city of Louisville in pain, wrapping my arms around them. And even today I pray the world sees my daughter’s humanity and values the love her family has for her and the dreams she has for her own life. And when it’s the same kind of people putting their perception on the world of film, ultimately you do get something that tends to seem and look the same. The more diverse eyes we have on content, the more diverse palettes and textures. I just want to say to women who are considering a colorist role and are a little intimidated by the technical aspects of what a colorist has to do, there’s a lot of creative input as well. I’ve been working on my own syllabi for years and documentary history is a tricky one. It’s like learning piano, you need to know the basics in order to change and modify. But at the same time, it really challenged me with how much canon I need to include and how many new voices that existed at the same time, but were neglected. If you have to add new voices, you have to kill the old voices. @capontepearson // “One of the biggest lessons I learned was being able to recognize the strengths and skills I already have and leveraging it in a different field, which I really try to advocate for for a lot of different filmmakers. Especially people who may not necessarily see filmmaking as a career because they don’t have the so-called expertise. As i sit here packing my room up, preparing to go to college, i cant help but reflect on what brought me to this point. I remember the first day of my 4th year we were going around the classroom and my teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. He got to me and i said “an actor on broadway” and before i could even finish my sentence he said “you know how many actors (in air quotes) are working at Target in LA becuase they’re not talented enough to make it big? You need to find a new career path because that’s completely unrealistic” I’m so thankful for that teacher because he lit a flame inside me. His cruel words helped push me when i started loosing momentum. I knew i had to prove him wrong. While I’m not all the way there yet, i think I’ve done a pretty good job so far. As we all make our way through this wild, wild world, were figuring out how to live each day as best we can. Thats what the 2.D project is for me–an expression of that day-to-day chaos that sits in my mind as I work out how to make it to the next moment. 2.D: Discrete & Determined is my debut project as a full-fledged multimedia artist, which Ive had the fortune of nurturing while traveling between Atlanta and Japan. The tape is a vivid exploration of textures that unravels past memories and looks to the future with unshakeable vision. Then, theres the clothing and visuals of the 2.D Capsule Collection expanding into an entire world (RNSC). For those of you whove known me for a while, you may see the throughlines that have progressed up to this moment. Discovery of self and culture is the motivation at the center of all of my art. Know that theres a larger story to this project, and thats indicative of the larger stories well all carry within us. To everyone in my life, you are embedded within these stories I tell; your wisdom, our conversations, our shared experiences, our smiles, our tears, our love, and so much more. Know that you inspire. THIS PROJECT IS FOR YOU! At the root of it all, Im seeking fulfillment for myself and my people. Theres a gravity to our every move, and, in a time when the world says otherwise, we continue to exist beyond the boxes and labels that restrict our being. I truly believe we all have something to offer. I wanna see you shine! Hopefully, 2.D helps you do that, but dont let me limit the dimensions of your expression either.
