Delighted to have won the best play for young Audiences at the WGGB awards last night. Had an amazing night and it was an honour just to be there. This play means so much to me on a personal level. Part of the reason I wrote the canary and the crow was because whilst Ive always enjoyed the theatre, I felt there werent many stories that I could relate to. To have recieved this award and the recognition of my peers for a story that is about the lived experience of a young working class black kid, is not lost on me. We had such an amazing night at the 🌍 premiere of my short film YEEZYS. My beautiful partner @lucy_coutinho_positivemedia was with me showing love and offering her support, as usual (she took these photos). And my mama was in the house! It meant so much for me to see her read her name at the end of the credits on the big screen. She’s the one who convinced me that I could do anything that I can dream. Also thanks to my big sis Lydia for coming out to support. I want to publicly acknowledge my wonderful cast. I didn’t want them to “act,” just to be, and they delivered. So much so that I am now convinced the film is a documentary that follows an actual family, and not a work of fiction haha Thank you all for believing in my vision and trusting me with your gifts. I have to give a major shout out to my directing partner on the film @shamesworthy for believing and lending his gifts to the project. He shot and edited the film on a micro budget and made it look amazing. Thank you, my brother. Also much love to the star ⭐️ of the film @magalyct36 for giving her entire heart and soul on set each day. Her passion is contagious and she delivered a masterpiece. Thank you, my friend. She told me that the story of an undocumented immigrant family fighting to make it in the United States is real to her as an immigrant. Big West Championships. 41 points scored between 4 women(best in the conference), 54 total by our whole squad. The highlight of the meet was @_bobbiej_ winning the hammer throw on her 6th and final throw. 4. School record holders. Barbara owns the hammer, weight, and, discus records. She finishes her career with marks of: 59.92m in the hammer, 17.80m in the weight, and 56.79mthe discus. @jtpickard threw 67.37m in the javelin to break the school record with the new-rule javelin. 5. Indoor season. 2019 was my first experience with indoor track. Flying almost weekly can be tough on the immune system but the group handled the season very well (prs from all of the weight throwers) 6. NCAA West preliminaries Three throwers qualified for the meet (most since 2014). Although we didnt have the performances we wanted, Im still proud to have made it this far. 7&8. @frustrated_throwscoach memes 😂 These both sum up most of my growing pains as a first year coach. Having to learn 100 different ways to explain one motion is frustrating yet rewarding. Or understanding which drills work best for each athlete. Or learning who learns from film vs my demonstrations vs having to physically put the athlete into the position. 9. What I feel like coaching athletes a few years younger than me 😂 10. 🚨LONG POST ALERT🚨 READ BEFORE JUDGING! It all started back in 2016, I was at a junior college on football scholarship in North Dakota when my mom received a sentencing letter in the mail stating that I had court on November 17, 2016 on a case that was back in 2015 (a whole year and a half later, I thought they threw it out the window) but during that time I thought I was invincible. I thought, if that didn’t stop me then NOTHING could! So then the letter pops up and it was during our thanksgiving break so I was happy, I’m thinking “ok I’m gonna go to court, he’s gonna give me a slap on wrist and I’ll be on my way. I remember getting off the plane driving home, I went to court and I was full of pride like, “look I gotta scholarship for football can I go now?” I remember standing in the court room and the judge first asked what was my classification in college, then he didn’t hesitate!! He told me I was sentenced to 8yrs. I was in shock and disbelief. I can remember turning around to my mom and fam and just crying real tears like my life is OVER! I ended up going to jail and calling my mom everyday for a month saying get me out!! I learned my lesson!!! I couldn’t think sleep or eat! I couldn’t show it because I was in there with other inmates didn’t wanna look soft! Fast forward, I didn’t know what was going on I woke up in the middle of the night because they called my name on the intercom. I was so excited I thought after a month it was time for me to get out!! Come to find out they shipping me off to PRISON! That day was the last day I spoke to my mom for another month and a half! That day my mom said “Shawn God spoke so clear to me and said You have to want it.” When she told me what thus said the Lord she had to back up bc she knew God Was not a man that he should lie. I wrote my mom a letter and said mom I have been reading my word and praying and I have totally surrendered to the Lord. I kept saying I have Faith! She told me now it’s time to go back to court after 3 months of imprisonment. She told the lawyer to petition the court for a retrial. I was on Spine Surgery trauma call last week and easily worked about 100 hours operating late every night....Late one night a nurse asked me “Elvis...Why are you always so happy...” And here’s my why... For me, I’ve always realized that the goal of life isn’t to avoid the thunderstorm....but to learn how to dance in the rain... The goal isn’t to try to find the PERFECT situation in life where you have the perfect career, perfect finances, perfect family, to achieve happiness.... But in fact....true happiness is often achieved in the middle of the worst shit that life can throw at you... I spent the first 20 years of my life in what most people would consider poverty in America....and in that poverty I learned that if I could be happy with absolutely nothing at all. I could be happy in the face of anything..... Happy when we got evicted, happy when I had three outfits for high school, happy when I didn’t get into med school the first time I applied...despite anything I always chose happiness I’m not saying I don’t have bad days where it feels like things are falling apart....I’m just saying that at the end of even the worst days of my life I’ve always CHOSEN to be happy.... So go find a mirror and look at the first person you see....and tell them Doctor Elvis prescribed them a dose of unlimited happiness... Have you ever heard the name Vivien Thomas. He is the African American high school graduate that helped pioneer the field of open heart surgery at Johns Hopkins many decades ago. There were a few films made about his life, “Something The Lord Made” on HBO, and “Partners of The Heart” on PBS. If you haven’t read about him or watched either of these, I urge you to do so. It’s an important part of American History and the History of Modern Medicine . . When I trained at Hopkins, they created four colleges, luckily I was placed in Vivien Thomas College. My previous research mentor, Peter Agre, also attended Hopkins for medical school, and he knew Vivien Thomas personally. He stated that the one thing everyone knew about Vivien Thomas, is that “he walked around with the most immaculate white coat on campus.” I remember that comment vividly, and it was even echoed in one of the movies above. Now that I am a physician, I have remained cognizant about presentation and appearance. Part of being a professional is looking professional. So in that regard, I have to take this moment and say thank you to @medelita_gram. This Osler fitted Blazer-style white coat seems like something Vivien Thomas would have worn.
