Woman with dead Child, 1903. /Well be looking at some work by Käthe Kollwitz for a few weeks. Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist whose artworks often depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. / . For this particular composition, she reveals in a letter that she used herself and her youngest son Peter as models. looking in the mirror for reference. Swipe to see studies done for this piece. . /The letter reads/- .....When he was seven years old and I was working on the etching (Woman with dead Child) I did a drawing of myself, holding him on my arm, in front of the mirror. That was very exhausting and I groaned. Then he said in his little child’s voice: Stop groaning, mum, it is going to be very beautiful… . Hans Kollwitz, the artist’s elder son, associated the death of his younger brother Peter who fell in the war with these two picture series: . I asked mother where she got the image of the mother with her dead child from – years before the war – which featured in almost all her pictures from that period. She thought she foresaw Peter’s death even then. The Farnese Hercules (Italian: Ercole Farnese) is an ancient statue of Hercules, probably an enlarged copy made in the early third century AD and signed by Glykon, who is otherwise unknown; the name is Greek but he may have worked in Rome. Like many other Ancient Roman sculptures it is a copy or version of a much older Greek original that was well known, in this case a bronze by Lysippos (or one of his circle) that would have been made in the fourth century BC. - @figure.sculpture on Instagram

This Sculpture of Bukwus was an amazing piece to create with my dear friend and mentor @lindsaystudio for the @yvraf . This piece represents someone who has become so disconnected from themselves, that they have become consumed by supernatural forces. For me this symbolizes the people we have in our lives that have suffered through drug addiction, alcoholism, desensitization, and many other afflictions of today’s society. I have signed up for a sculpting course and here’s my finished 1:1 head bust. Sculpting is a really great observation practice. Great for getting better at anatomy too, which is crucial in drawing. I’m hoping to do more of these in the future, but either on a smaller scale or just in Zbrush (less messy) 😄. Remembering Rudolfo Anaya (1937 Pastura, New Mexico-2020 Albuquerque, New Mexico) . Representing the active intellectual life of Albuquerque writer, Rudolfo Anaya sculptor Sonny Rivera posed the author holding his notepad like an important classical tablet. Best known for his beloved and yet continuously controversial 1972 novel “Bless Me, Ultima,” Anaya is perhaps the most widely respected writer of Chicano literature. . On his tablet appear a few words from one of the many lyrical passages in “Bless Me, Ultima,” Ultima’s final blessing to Antonio. “Love life, and if despair enters your heart, look for me in the evenings when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills. I shall be with you.” This passage which celebrates the spiritual connections between all forms of life is one of many that has been interpreted as some form of witchcraft. “Bless Me, Ultima” is recommended for censorship every few years by religious or parental groups across the country. .
