While the rate of new coronavirus cases has been creeping up statewide and dozens of schools have closed temporarily due to infections, some Connecticut districts plan to begin to transition from hybrid models of online and classroom learning to in-person classes for all students five days a week. Superintendents say the decision to proceed relies heavily on public health metrics and their abilities to mitigate risk, but they advise parents not to view the shift as a permanent escape from the hybrid model. With the looming prospect of shutdowns later in the fall and winter, state officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of all students receiving some in-person education, while they still can. “The question is if it is spreading in schools and if our mitigation efforts are working,” West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Tom Moore said. “If the situation changes, we will adjust, and we monitor it daily.” With more students learning in the same school building, districts are working to heighten health and safety protocols and adjusting for the possibility of increased contacts among students and staff. Many schools have separated students, particularly at the elementary level, into small cohorts to reduce the risk of virus spread and the number of students who have to potentially quarantine. But districts may have to adjust cohorting and social distancing guidelines to accommodate additional students. I’ve seen this shared and re-shared all over instagram and I’ve gotta say that as a person who climbed that corporate ladder and found it to be empty and unfulfilling...this really resonated with me. . . In the past few months I’ve watched my friends and clients become furloughed, unemployed, under-employed or simply leave jobs and employers that were toxic. I’ve talked to teachers during their brow appointments who are having to buy their own PPE and are terrified to go back to work 😔 . . I get it. Youre not as active as night and will be heading to bed, so consuming carbs which will increase insulin, will lead to fat storage. The problem with this viewpoint is that it doesnt take into consideration the most important variable when it comes to fat loss... CALORIES. You could eat all your calories and carbs at dinner if you wished and as long as your energy expenditure exceeded your intake, wed see fat loss. Now could the timing of your carbs and meals INDIRECTLY affect fat loss by impacting performance and appetite regulation? Yes. But this still comes down to energy balance. For the majority of people, who arent athletes, basing your meal and nutrient timing on what will personally help you regulate your intake is likely a smart idea. Ironically, I find that a lot of clients often see better results by slightly backloading their calories and carbs to the evening when: 1. They can have a family meal and not have to eat something different. 2. Theyre tired and are more likely to lapse. It’s been a long time since I’ve been fully naked in nature and there is something wonderfully freeing about it. This view in particular was amazing because we had just hiked for two hours to get to this secluded lake outside of Nakusp. We’ve been taking some very needed time off to enjoy living in a van and getting to see more of the province we live in. ***Master Trail Plan update*** We completed our Cultural Resource Study in May and submitted it to Tonto for review and final approval. The timing of this submission wasnt great thanks to COVID-19 and the forest service being slammed with wildfires. Despite the delays, we are hopeful we will get final approval within the next 30-45 days, as Matthew Lane, Mesa District Range said, were in the home stretch now! 🤟 During this delay, HTA wanted to be resourceful and continue with other items we knew would be the next requirements, but could be addressed simultaneously as the trails were going through the approval process. We got to work on the new proposed trail heads/parking lots- Wild Horse and Coon Bluff. One of our Board members, Gary Hana, happens to be a surveyor, and very knowledgeable when it comes to civil engineering and working with MCDOT. With the assistance of Gary, making calls into our good friend and advocate Supervisor Chucri, we were able to meet with MCDOT on site and find out exactly what requirements we needed to have these two important parking areas developed and meet their approval. We found out that the previously proposed Wild Horse parking area (which was where it exists today at the Wild Horse Trail head) would need to be relocated 800 to the east on Highway in order to meet MCDOTs line of sight requirements. We not only moved the Wild Horse parking/trail head, but increased its size (See photos) We also enlarged Coon Bluff by a couple of acres making it almost 8 acres, and larger than both the McDowell or Usery Park parking areas you may be familiar with. With the required changes to Wild Horse and expansion of Coon Bluff, we had to complete an addendum to our previously submitted Cultural Resource study because the changes had not been looked at for any archaeological issues or heritage findings. This addendum was completed by Logan Simpson and submitted by HTA earlier this week. We feel the details are important and wanted everyone to know that HTA is mindful of its supporters and know youre the most important factor to our success!! Thank you for your continued support!! Joining the twitter band wagon 🐦 I get asked this on a daily basis and if it isn’t that question it’s another form of the same question! For years I fell into that bad vs good mindset myself. I would only eat single ingredient foods an avoid anything processed like it was covid. The truth is you only have: * Foods higher or lower in calories. * More or less nutritious foods. * Foods that support your current goals or ones that do not. I personally like to eat high amounts of fruit and vegetables and a high protein diet. It suits both my current goals and values and I really enjoy it. If I want a pizza, I’ll get a pizza. If I want a bit of chocolate I will eat a bit of chocolate. If I want a deep fat fried mars bar then I’ll get one. I will take the above questions into consideration. If I want to be as healthy as possible then eating all of the above in massive amounts and going over on calories week after week isn’t part of the bigger picture and I really don’t think I would enjoy that... American steakhouse chain Sizzler said in a public statement today that its bankruptcy filing is “a direct result of the financial impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the casual dining sector.” Sales at Sizzler were already declining pre-pandemic, and it remains unclear how many locations will return, if any, following the company’s chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. {Motivation for those of us that still can’t get over the fact that your fave yoga studio or gym is closed.} I stopped to snap a picture on a run last night 🏃♀️ . Finally got back into running (well more like jogging haha!) about a month ago. . It’s one of those things that’s so hard to get back into but really whips you back into shape and can be pleasant once you overcome the first hill ⛰ (or maybe the first few...) 😅 . I’m giving myself a little breathing space in Europe with my family after being on such a tight work - work- work- no socializing routine in Santa Cruz. I also have to thank my friend @pilateswithclara for posting a bunch of Pilates videos and motivating me to do exercises (abs, glutes, arm strengthening) ! . Back home in Santa Cruz I’d find myself mostly sitting at my chair (with a few breaks to do stuff like water my plants 🌱 ) from 6:30/ till noon when I’d start getting ready to bike to the Anato studio/ my office. I currently have a much more balanced morning work routine where I’ve been getting up every 1.5 hours or so to do some push ups, planks , abs and some streching ... Since I do intermittent fasting all morning it really helps cut that morning hunger that comes around 10:30/11. (More on my fasting journey coming in an upcoming newsletter!) Also , since I havent had a yoga class to go to since corona ive been soooo lazy about my stretching, and my back was really starting to flare up 🔥 . But incorporating just a few downdogs, shoulder & hamstring stretches after these mini workouts has made a world of a difference. . So, if you’re like me and you’re still getting over the fact that gyms, yoga studios dance classes and the like are still closed (or at least not like they used to be), then do yourself a favor and get some motivation! After a week of engaging in psychological warfare with residents and organizers, we at camp jtd invited @phillymayor to our home to open up a dialogue on how we can responsibly place folks into housing and solve some of the ongoing issues related to homelessness and poverty in the city. We as a community prepared several days for this brunch in and we’re very excited for the opportunity to once again invite our supporters, our naysayers and all those linked to this struggle in to this occupied space to share in testimonies and joy and pain and radical, transformative change. Unfortunately we received word this morning that our mayor does not want to be a part of such conversations. We still have an abundance of food and love down at 22nd and Ben Franklin Parkway. This 1972 Ford Condor II motorcoach based on a Ford truck chassis was used by the chairman and co-founder of McLaren Engines as a trackside hospitality vehicle at various USAC, Can-Am, and F1 events in the 1970s. Earlier this year, this classic piece of McLaren history came up for auction. After 49 bids, it sold to McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown for $32,500. Inside the vehicle hidden away was an official 1978 Toyota Grand Prix timing sheet from Watkins Glen, which was the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix for twenty consecutive years (1961–1980). 42 years later, the Condor is reunited with McLaren and is back to work at the 2020 Indy 500! - @mclarenrenaultf1 on Instagram

Tuesday Journaling. One of the hardest places I have ever been the only Black person is on the front lines. I’m often the only Black person in spaces. On hikes, in church, play dates, etc. Last night I lined the streets with allys and my sign that read “I am, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, George Floyd, MY LIFE MATTERS”. I was the only Black person there because we postponed it due to the wildfires up north, so our attendee number dropped. I tried to slow everything down, but time was just flying by. We were notified of the hateful counter protesters just a few blocks away. I took a breath and held my sign out farther. Then my husband showed up, worried and uneasy. I fidgeted a bit and let him know I was fine. Then the Sheriff showed up to make a blockade between us and the counter protesters, I took a breathe. Just watching and waving and engaging with the people in cars honking and giving the thumbs up. One white child flipped us the bird as her white mom drove by with a smile on her face... A new enzyme ‘cocktail’ could help tackle plastic waste and recycling issues. A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth in England have developed a new “super enzyme” that can break down plastics up to six times faster than standard enzymes, according to a new research paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. This combination of enzymes can speed up the decomposition process for the most common thermoplastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in single-use bottles, carpets, and clothing. This thermoplastic usually takes hundreds of years to degrade in the environment, but the new enzyme compound takes only days to convert it back to its building blocks. Gillian, 19/05/2020, #CovidLife There’s a small hotel on my road. A Bed & Breakfast. The old fashioned kind. In normal times, excited tourists stream in and out all year. But times have changed. As COVID -19 engulfed our world, so industries shut down more or less overnight including hospitality and leisure. This little hotel was shocked by the sudden emptiness; it’s facade seemed sad and neglected as the days and weeks went by. But just last week, new life! The doors have now opened to a group of homeless women, providing a sanctuary of safe shelter, hot showers, protection from COVID-19 and fresh food. In the midst of this crisis, it is apparent that the UK Government and local authorities have distributed previously unimaginable funds to quickly mobilise rough sleepers off the streets and into accommodation. It poses the question, why has this not happened before? Always bottom of the pile; never enough funding for housing, or spaces that will accommodate. My feeling is that this change has been a ‘panic’ reaction by Government and it concerns me greatly, once the crisis has ended, that people who are now in accommodation will be expected to return to the streets just as fast as they were taken off. This could have a devastating affect on the mental wellbeing of people concerned. But now, we have a once in a generation opportunity to achieve something remarkable: we can end homelessness. We can do this as a direct result of the public health approach driven by the COVID-19 emergency. It has been a huge change and achievement to move people out of homelessness. Organisations such as Pathway, the Faculty for Homeless and Inclusion Health, and the LNNM (The London Network of Nurses and Midwives) are calling for this change to be made permanent; for government to continue the groundbreaking approach to housing and healthcare provision for people experiencing homelessness. Admittedly, hotels like the B&B on my road, and thousands more across the UK will need to eventually resume their usual business of providing a service to tourists etc. But maybe there can be a new scheme: I would call it ‘Rooms that Heal’ This scheme would make it mandatory[...] - @mcpinfoundation on Instagram

Cabrillo College and Red Cross Evacuation Center The County Emergency Operations Center has requested that Cabrillo College provide space as an overnight shelter for individuals who have had to evacuate. FPPO staff are mobilizing today to prepare the gymnasium for Red Cross services and overnight sleeping arrangements, open now. The K Parking Lot will serve as a host for overnight safe parking for RVs and those who want to sleep in their vehicles, also open now.. The M and S Parking Lots will be used by emergency services providers as staging areas for their crews — mostly ambulances. The College is cancelling outdoor events scheduled for this weekend. The Farmers Market will be cancelled this Saturday, along with public safety motorcycle classes. Any other event should be cancelled because of air quality concerns. For the foreseeable future, Cabrillos Director of Facilities and relevant Division Deans and Managers have pre-approved authority to monitor air quality conditions and cancel outdoor activities.
