Michael Thompson has informed us @lastprisonerproject that he and a group of other inmates from Muskegon Correctional have been taken to the hospital with what is presumed to be COVID-19. At 69 years old and diabetic, we are terrified that Michael will not make it. A new study at Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine will compare the outcomes of people with COVID-19 who are monitored at home by wearable technology, to people who receive standard outpatient care. The investigators hope to determine if Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) can be used successfully to track symptoms and flag people at risk for getting severely ill, and why. Jonathan D. I could not have known at the time but, when I was five years old, some 500 miles northeast of my rural Texas home, a young man named John Lewis crossed a bridge for me. That historic day, like many others in his extraordinary life, Congressman Lewis endured the unconscionable to challenge and change the conscience of the nation he loved—to make our union more perfect; to bring us closer to our founding ideals; so that little black children, like me, could pursue our American dreams. On a number of occasions, I had the profound privilege to talk with the congressman, to learn from him, to absorb his wisdom and warmth—both the resolve he inspired from afar and the joy he radiated up close. My @fordfoundation colleagues and I were honored to host him for a conversation and were moved deeply by his presence and perspicacity. Five years ago, he invited me and others to join him on a 50th anniversary pilgrimage across that modest, Selma bridge—to affirm a sacred conviction, in his words, that “love will conquer hate” and “hope will conquer fear,” that “our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year,” but “the struggle of a lifetime.” That moment was among the most powerful and meaningful of my time on this earth. Late last night, Congressman John Lewis, my hero, crossed another bridge, from elder to ancestor, with characteristic courage and grace. In marking this passage, we need not idealize Congressman Lewis beyond who he was: A founder of—a righteous force for—a more American United States and a fairer, better world. Id like to spotlight CD8’s very own Kristen Harvey, an administrative clerk for the Los Angeles Sanitation Department. Kristen was hired through the City’s Targeted Local Hire Program (TLH). In the spirit of highlighting Black women, I am showing love to Kristen for her commitment to serving the City of Los Angeles. Kristen heard about the TLH program from her mother and decided to apply. In her previous job, she experienced discrimination and realized that there was no room for her to promote beyond her role. According to Kristen, “TLH has been a great start for my career, and its changed things for the better. Im really happy this program was created to give people a chance to excel in life”. Kristen’s story represents the importance of investing in Black and Brown communities and through opportunities like the City’s TLH program. Congressmember Karen Bass @repkarenbass understands this reality and introduced the Jobs and Justice Act 2020, which includes several provisions to protect and strengthen Black American families with major provisions, including raising the national minimum wage to $15 an hour. A lot of you guys dont know this about my dad... But hes been a victim of systemic racism. Back in 1969 my father was wrongfully accused of mishandling a white women. In some crazy love triangle, things didnt go her way so she called the cops stating she had been abused by my father. With no DNA testing and evidence provided, he was given a 15 year sentence in prison for something that he did not do. Im proud of my dad... throughout all that he has been through in life he still smiles and carries a positive vibe not even money could buy. He loves ALL types of people and he never discriminates because of race. On today I want to say Happy Fathers Day to you Dad. I am beyond proud to call you my father! Reeves, PhD, The Kansas African American Museums (TKAAM) enthusiastic Educational Director! Dr. Reeves has been the Education Director here at TKAAM for over one and a half years and has introduced students to Kansas African American history by organizing tours with many schools, colleges and universities locally and across the state of Kansas. Her positive and hard-working spirit and affinity for the color yellow adds a sprinkle of sunshine to our team! Learn more about her below! The Kansas native was born raised and educated in Independence graduating from Independence High School and earning her first college degree at Independence Community College. She received her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications with a minor in Public Relations from Pittsburg State University. While at Pitt State she lettered in track serving as team captain her senior year. She also participated on the PSU yearbook staff and wrote for the PSU newspaper. At Temple University Dr. Reeves studied Africology receiving both a masters and doctorate degree under the tutelage of Dr. Molefi Asante, Dr. Theophile Obenga and Dr. Abu Abarry in Temple’s African and African American Studies department. Her dissertation was entitled: Radio Vision Car Tunes: Philosophy and Implementation with a Timeline of African American Images in Film. Dr. Reeves worked as a Communications Strategist in the Information and Public Relations divisions of the Texas Department of Transportation and The City of Detroit. Oder gefallen ihnen die Fernseh- und Onlinegottesdienste, die in den vergangenen Monaten entwickelt wurden, so gut, dass sie auch künftig lieber von zu Hause aus mitfeiern? Auch ich habe diese Formate schätzen gelernt und wünsche mir, dass die neue Vielfalt geistlichen Lebens bestehen bleibt. Vielleicht haben etliche auch gemerkt, dass ihnen der sonntägliche Gottesdienst gar nicht fehlt? Wird #Gott in der Welt nach #Corona noch weniger gefragt sein als bisher? 2019 haben 270 000 Menschen der evangelischen Kirche den Rücken gekehrt, fast so viele, wie #Wiesbaden Einwohner hat. Andererseits engagieren sich viele in kirchlichen Projekten, die noch nie Mitglied in der Kirche waren oder ausgetreten sind. Sie machen in den Jugendkirchen mit, unterstützen Geflüchtete, organisieren Tafeln und begleiten Ältere und Kranke in der Nachbarschaft, weil ihnen diese Arbeit sinnvoll erscheint und Spaß macht. Andere besuchen zwar nie einen Gottesdienst, singen aber im #Kirchenchor, weil sie die Lieder und klassischen Oratorien lieben. @marlonwayans and I met on the set of the “Wayans Brothers” in the fall of 1995. In these 25 years since we have worked together several more times and it’s been great. But when we did the “Marlon” show for NBC things changed. Friends became family and adding @breshawebb and @diallo multiplied our love laughter and respect exponentially. Over the last 4 years we have supported each other through moments of disappointment celebration and tragedy. I’m so grateful Marlon that you put this band together and no matter where life takes us I hope you know that we love you for life and celebrate your talent drive work ethic wisdom and hustle.
