1910: As the SOMAGeneralstore.com site shows, shopping options in our area have been expanding for some time. Back when the pace of life was slower, Cornell’s Meat Market occupied the spot at the intersection of Brookside Drive and Old Short Hills Road. The structure was originally a private home; then it held the butcher shop, and after that, ownership passed to the Millburn Township, which used it for its first library. . #mshmagazine #millburn #millburnnj #shorthills #shorthillsnj #recordarchives @therecordarchives #vintage #vintagephoto #vintagephotography @somageneralstore - @mshmagazine on Instagram

It is so peacefully hopeful to see photos of early Black Americans in rural farm settings and they’ve become my favorite types of photos to collect. I actually was gifted a similar photo of my great grandfather and his parents that Ill share one day! These types of photos beam with pride at what they accomplished and built with their hands! I image that in this photo, as far as their eyes could see, they saw fields of plenty. Corn, collards, butter beans, okra, squash, and sweet potatoes. Many Black American families in the south owned hundreds of acres in the early 1900’s that allowed them to insulate themselves with self sufficiency and opportunities for generations. Our early #Blackfarmers were some of our first business men and they understood the importance of land and inheritance. For them, land was a source of #freedom. We can only image the constant challenges southern Black farmers of the 19th and 20th centuries, many who had experienced slavery first hand, had to face daily to keep their land. The day to day tasks of planting, reaping, managing debts and taxes before quickbooks and keeping their children connected to the land had to be very challenging. I can imagine the satisfaction they must have felt from working their own land and knowing their toiling was not for the benefit of anyone else except their own families and communities. There had to be great satisfaction that rested in their souls from knowing their land had their FREE blood, sweat and tears embedded in the soil. Working and hopeful that not only did they plant crops for that moments harvest, but to know they had left seeds that would be reaped for the generations to come. #blackhistory #vintagephotos #ADOS #blackamericana #blackarchive #blackamerican - @black.archive on Instagram

Happy #MeleMonday! We invite you to explore Welo Hou, an ongoing blog dedicated entirely to compositions found within the Roberts Mele Collection. “I have seen Mrs. Helen H. Roberts, and have additional evidence regarding her skill in recording...she impresses me as an efficient woman, whose pleasing personality would insure [sic] cooperation from the natives and from others interested in the work.” – Herbert E. Gregory. Enduring countless setbacks, financial hurdles, language barriers, and even physical illness, Helen Roberts (1888–1985) remained steadfast in her commitment to the role of gathering and preserving ancient mele for future generations. With Native Hawaiian scholar and activist, Thomas Maunupau (1891–1956) as her interpreter, she successfully gathered nearly 700 compositions and 200 audio recordings from contributors on the islands of Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, and Oʻahu within a year’s time. As we conclude the Welo Hou: Building Connections to the Roberts Mele Collection project, we feature a mele inoa written in honor of Helen Roberts and her extraordinary work in establishing this mele collection. Because of her commitment to excellence and the generosity of the contributors who shared their knowledge, this invaluable mele resource continues to serve as a bridge between the voices of the past and the community of the present. Click the link in our story to view the lyrics and translations to this mele or visit: https://bit.ly/2S3Mv3M. We invite you to leave comments:https://www.bishopmuseum.org/blog/library-and-archives/. Who is the REAL Hopper of the Crossing? ⠀⠀ Enticed by news of the Australian Gold Rush Stephen Hopper with his brother John emigrated from Kent, England in 1856 and set sail for Melbourne, Victoria to strike gold. ⠀⠀ After 3 years on the goldfields Stephen (28) met & married Elizabeth (Betsy) Rogers (16). They had one of the only houses for miles around on a small farm in Werribee (aka Hoppers Lane) and together had eleven children. ⠀⠀ The history books tell us Hoppers Crossing was named after Stephen Hopper … before any highways had been laid or estates had been built. ⠀⠀ It’s said that he’d be up at all hours, opening and closing the gates for passing carts – keeping Skeleton Creek connected. ⠀⠀ But history got it wrong! ⠀⠀ The Australian Railway historical society unearthed documents that showed it was indeed Betsy Hopper who was the Gatekeeper and Stephen was the Ganger who looked after a section of the track. ⠀⠀ The namesake of Hoppers Crossing is actually a pioneering mother of 11 children and one of the very few female railway employees of her time! 🙋🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀ She played an integral role as the gatekeeper for the only route through Skeleton Creek, and established a family and community in the area, where descendants of her children are still known to reside. ⠀⠀ #locallegends ⠀⠀ *First pic shown is grandson of Stephen & Betsy also known as Stephen Hopper with his 7 children in 1924. ⠀⠀ Sources 📖: ⠀⠀ •Star Weekly •The Willis Tree|Julie Hopper - (Great great Grand daughter) •Wyndham History - @thevillage_hoppersjunction on Instagram

Lets go to the Lyons House in Carberry for this #ManitobaMonday! This building was built during the 1890s with a combination of Italianate and Queen Anne structure styles. The politician Robert Fern Lyons and his family were first to occupy the home. Charles Williams Dec 31 1959 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf For sure this is the best haircut of the week — the newspaper accounts of the time even pause to remark on this classic 1950s ducktail. This handsome hero went by the name Charles Williams while passing as a man: “Through about 25 states and at least four jails.” The newspaper stories of the time give us a sense of what Charles was navigating — reference is made to psychiatric help being suggested, followed by the seemingly forced reply, “I have no desire to be boy.” In one lengthy news story the parents are interviewed and although they are generally sympathetic they express the opinion that, “Barbara is a very mixed up girl… We want her to find herself.” Photos #1 & #2 are the original wire service image (the wire service 8 x 10 combines the two mug shots from the Golden, Colorado Jefferson County Jail), #3 is the November coverage of an initial arrest in which it sounds like Charles will return to their previous identity and then #4 reveals yet another arrest in December which leads us to suspect this is not just a passing phase. It’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. In the spirit of that wonderful uncertainty, here’s to opening up a space of common ground and shared experience in all our unique gender brilliance. Stay tuned for the next guest-curated rare vintage photo coming tomorrow to Butch Hair Quarantine. — Jenni Olson #lgbthistory #queerpioneer #transhistory #queerhistory #lgbtq #lgbt #1959 #1950shistory #QPA #QueerPhotoArchive #vintagephoto #butchhairquarantine #quarcut - @butchhairquarantine on Instagram

#200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. In doing this, they unknowingly created a world-class healthcare system. #ClevelandHistory #PresbyterianChurch #Bicentennial 📸: Courtesy of University Hospitals - @oldstonechurchcle on Instagram

An old #TBT newspaper clipping of Laurel Hill (aka: Randolph) Mansion. Built in 1767 by Rebecca Rawle, in 1828 it was purchased Dr. Philip Syng Physick, known as the Father of American Surgery. Its no surprise that a prominent doctor would see the advantage of having a country house to escape the repeated outbreaks of disease in colonial Philadelphia that puts our current crisis in perspective. Although decades had passed since the Yellow Fever scourge (that Dr. Physick himself survived), cholera broke out in the city in July 1832. And once again, a privileged class was able to socially distance at their summer homes, many that now comprise the Park Charms. Thankfully, the creation of Fairmount Park saved these houses from the ravages of progress. And fortunately, an early incarnation of the park saved many people from the ravages of cholera. Philadelphia’s death rates were one-quarter those in New York and one-twelfth of Montreal because of comparably clean and available water from the Fairmount Reservoir (Water Works) for drinking, bathing, and cleaning the streets. 💚🌳💚🌿💚🌳💚🌿💚 The park system now allows for more equatable access to the green space that remains a literal lifeline of physical and mental health.
