He taught us how to fly. He led dead poets. He was the therapist we didn’t know we needed. He clowned around when we were down and was always there to patch things up. He made genies and magic feel real and he was probably our generations first exposure to cross dressing and lord was he fabulous. Every movie he starred in and every character he played during that golden age showed us how to show up fully, love passionately, to give second chances, to put family first and to fight to get through to people even when it seems like a lost cause. He was an brilliant actor and a hilarious comedian, but he was more than that. All he ever did was use his gifts to make the world a better place. Then a day came when the world was too much for him, and alone one cold morning he took his own life. Just like Anthony Bourdain, Chester Bennington, Avicii, and Chris Cornell, too many of the men who inspire us and light the way lose the will to live and struggle to find that light within themselves. In a world where it seems the very worst of men make decisions for the rest of us, I find myself increasingly focused on looking at human issues from the perspective of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. If even millionaires who have accomplished all of their dreams want to die, I can only imagine how many countless souls in the world are struggling to survive. There’s a quote I like that says ‘be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle that you know nothing about’ but I would take it one step further. Love fearlessly and courageously cause nothing in this life is promised. In a world that obsesses over looks and status and self protection, and from a generation that says “do less” I would challenge us to practice radical love, radical compassion, and radical patience for those around us. It’s been said that the smallest amount of love could change someone’s day, and perhaps now we can take that a step further and recognize that any act of love in this day and age could literally save a life. So here’s to one of the greatest of his generation and may we honor his memory by being messengers of those little acts love. - @dustinthomasxo on Instagram

As I turn 24 today, I want to take a moment and rewind the past year of my life. That year was life-changing for me, I moved to a new city, on a new venture. I worked hard to be reputable in my domain of work in a short period of time, And this didn’t happen with only my efforts, it was a collective of efforts from everyone around me, my friends, my family, people who supported me, and people who did not support me; every single comment I got helped me realize one thing, and I am so grateful for all of it. But the most important thing I learnt is that the sky is the limit, a person can never stop growing and learning if he puts his mind and heart to it, and that’s what I did. The coming year I will keep doing what I love, I will be greedy for success, I will do all that I can to help my image, and help people who stood next to me. Thanks for all the birthday love, my friends. In these weird times, it feels selfish to still consider something as personal and low-stakes as a birthday to take up emotional weight on my heart, but having so many reminders of the value of life and friendship and tender, delicate openness helps me recall why we celebrate birthdays at all: it’s a way to simply say “I’m grateful that you were born, and I personally believe life would be worse without you.” Thank you all for the reminder, and I genuinely wish the same kindness on every one of you, no matter the day. It’s also a moment to reflect back on the good, the bad, and the general day-to-day of the previous year. From July 30th, 2019 to 2020, I: 1. Wrote two feature scripts 2. Shot five short films 3. Fostered 1 pregnant dog, help birth 5 puppies, raised them for 6 weeks, and ultimately adopted one 4. Completed one year of therapy. 5. Confronted my anxious attachment style in regards to my romantic and familial relationships 6. Learned how to let go of some control in my creative and personal life (still learning, it’s gonna be a minute) 7. Lived with a partner who has easily become my better half 8. Told my family I loved them more often (also still learning, forgetting to say it regularly for 30 years is a hard habit to break) 9. Learned to believe in benevolence when confronted with mystery 10. Listened eagerly, because it’s what every straight white cis male should be doing these days.
