So I heard it’s teacher appreciation week.. In the middle of a global pandemic, millions of human beings struggling with financial matters, mental health, racial injustice, and just a defiant lack of empathy, teachers feel like an essential group of people to honor and appreciate right now. From teachers of the soul on a day to day basis to people who dedicate their lives or a very significant amount of time to it, like this beam of light pictured here @rileyberris, THANK YOU. Thank. YOU. Now is the time more than ever it seems we need you. And it’s up to us to cultivate a heart and mind that is capable of listening to others on a daily basis. Reminds me of a quote from a hero Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Lifes most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” ...I’ll try and ask that more and more from now on. And to YOU @rileyberris, being in close quarters while you have been teaching online these past couple months, I have gained a sharper perspective on how much energy and thought and pure love goes into this. I ask to myself while watching you, ‘Are all teachers this amazing?’ So many are, but damn you give those kids your everything. No matter the day you’re having, you show up and ask all of them one by one how their day is going, and they explain why a day is sad or happy or anything in between. You’re a rockstar. Teachers strike me as needing empathy to be the most successful. And that’s what we need. Idk. It feels so basic when I fall asleep at night.. ‘wait, why can’t all of us think for 5 seconds about someone that’s different from us, put ourselves in their circumstances, and understand why they feel the way they do’. As children, I think we all thought this was a no brainer. If you do this practice you realize that humans are SO EXCITING. Fascinating. Shot a nice and sweet narrative music video for @gbenga3k ‘s new track SLEEP. Directed by @fencesstudio aka The secret sauce duo aka The Oparah Bros! link in their bio and my site 👈🏾 Was interesting to light a whole backyard with a small budget. We opted for 100W bulbs with 40inch paper lanterns. Designed by myself and built by my dad. They’re essentially festoons but my big brain thought that making them interlinked would be good idea (narrator: it wasn’t) ⚰️. Have to go back and redesign them looool Really cool thing I discovered by mistake during the grade is that you can essentially raise the gain / general exposure which would blow out the lanterns. But the bring the highlights down and make them warmer, and you get this flat “properly” exposed look but they’re still technically over exposed on the waveform. Possibly only works on darker scenes? I put together this story back in March 24, 2019. Unfortunately, the story didn’t gain enough traction to get picked up for an editorial piece. It was the last creative pulse I had to put together a project on my own. My lack in my passion to concept/shoot has fallen and got me stuck in a hiatus. After 1 year, it’s crazy to see how relevant this story is today with all that’s happening. Looking back at this piece, it inspired me to start back up again to hopefully find my groove and to start releasing meaningful pieces. On this day I walked around the city with puffy watery eyes and my mask on. I left the house even though my mom had asked me not to. I took my camera with me, walked the bridge and just cried from Brooklyn to Manhattan back to BK. I was in no rush to head back home so I took my time and sat down at a park bench to eat lo-mein and soup dumplings. Having so many emotions at once while being on “lockdown” is hard. During this pandemic I’ve had to bury two uncles. No words can express how hard thats been. Flying home which was something I always look forward to became a fucking heart-ache task. uma vida e 365 dias atrás, no topo de minas. ano passado decidi sair do estúdio e treinar um pouco mais a foto documental, olhando especificamente pra cultura da rave no brasil. projeto que me levou a grutas, galpões, praias e montanhas. lugares onde conheci dezenas de pessoas que me receberam muito bem e valorizaram meu trabalho de uma forma que a moda nunca soube fazer. retratado aqui o coletivo @masterplanobh num dia gelado, oferecendo um espaço de refúgio e construção de subjetividade pra vida mineira. corpos libertos, puros e sem destino numa auto-celebração sem fim. diante de tantos futuros vazios, vejo nas fotos a suspensão do tempo que o mundo techno sonha. o combate ao imperativo da ordem & progresso, a noite excitada e veloz. política imaginada, technocultura. uma vez que as estruturas da modernidade continuam a falir até desaparecer, aqui se imagina - e se dança - um novo mundo. em 2020 essa pesquisa foi freada mas fico emocionado e animado em pensar na reconstrução dessa cena. espero estar lá pra fotografar :) (a foto de pedro deitado & as duas últimas são do amado @gguedes) - @pdrpinho on Instagram
