Copper oxide ink.Could there be a better color? My midlife attempt to turn the clock back 25 years - swimming in the Blue Grotto with a group of tanned Italian teenagers - jagged rocks shading us as the sun slips into the sea. Its one of those colors for me. Its the oxidation that makes it all work.(I always think of what my dad says - Im not aging, Im oxidizing😊.) In this case I found an old hammered copper bowl at the junk shop that already had the spotty, blue, tell tale signs of a nice petina. I took it home added two cups of vinegar and I think 2 teaspoons of salt. In one day the liquid was already a wonderful blue green. Letting it sit now to see how deep it can go. I did some tests with another ink I made from a parasitic tubar that comes up in my yard every spring called Orobanche, or Broomrape. It has little purplish flowers that fade to tan. It simmered into a lovely green with a dash of soda ash I made in the oven. In the S shaped test I mixed the two with a drop of rust and it made a lovely dark patch. The second shot is oxide and rust as well. Pink tones are avocado - more on that later. And as a lovely surprise my IG friend @enso_by_karravan sent me a lovely little surprise this past week. Also process below. The creative process is what I enjoy most about cooking. I’ve searched to see if these were ever done before and the fact that I may have innovated and created something new in culinary is nothing short of amazing to me and extremely gratifying. Thank you all so much for the amazing response👍👍. Tag me on whatever you use them, I would love to see your creations using the Stained Glass Chips. Process: 1- Slice pears and kiwi using a mandoline, 1.0-1.5mm and using a sharp knife cut thin slices of strawberries and blueberries (Barlett Pears are my choice). Also choose pears that are ripe but still firm enough to slice. 2- place pear slices on a baking sheet and on top of them, lay the other fruits. 3- bake at 200F-93C with another silpat and baking sheet on top, for about 20-25 minutes until fruits have soften and become translucent. 4- carefully remove the top silpat and lower oven temperature to 175F-80C. Arrange any fruits that may have moved. 5- keep chips in the low temp oven until completely dehydrated, 1:30-2:00 hours. 6- Remove from oven and let them cool. 7- remove chips carefully as they will be paper thin. - Chips should be kept in airtight container to maintain crispness or if they soften over time they can be popped back in low temperature oven and they will crisp up again. - @spreadit.store on Instagram

It is funny how random things sometimes are.. . Busy days in the studio, and we did a mistake in the application of a glazes for a bunch of soup bowls, wrong base-glaze..... :s I last minute added one of the bowls to the oven to fire anyway, and surprise-surprise, this butterfly appeared from the cocoon! :) . The baseglaze was Taupe color which is a quite neutral brown-grey glaze (see next photo), but this second application with a transparant glaze created magic in the fire, revealing a subtle pattern of Turquoise-Green-Blue. Surprises like this make my day smile. . As you may have guessed, my move has been postponed. Uncertainty is the overarching theme of the current moment and all we can do is accept it. Since I can’t have the exciting change of a move right now, I’m hoping to make some exciting changes in my work. I’ve been daydreaming about working with translucent color. When you work with a dark clay body like I do, the only way to do that is to put a layer of white slip (liquid clay) under the glaze. The test tile in this photo has a translucent chrome green glaze with a really lovely crackle (ceramicists call it crazing 😜). What do you think? What should I call it? The deep, dark woods....... The rainforest floor is in constant shade, sometimes only getting about 2% sunlight. Its a strange, rich biome, full of decomposing plant and animal matter that feeds the roots of the towering trees. We humans are down on the floor with the fungi and lichen, I always loved the David Attenborough documentaries when he left the floor to abseil and climb amongst the birds and epiphytes of the tree tops. This week we prepared, packed and fired the kiln. There is nothing particularly special about this event as it is a routine part of my working life as a potter. But this was the first time since March and it gave the occasion a sense of anticipation and excitement. I will be including some of these Pod forms to the online shop this week. They were fired precariously balanced on sea shells to allow the soda vapour to drift around the carved surfaces. Bringing some subtle and unexpected variation of colour. When I pulled this plate out of my our final kiln firing before the community college ceramic studio that I work at shut down for the pandemic, one of the teachers and a few of my fellow lab technicians ooohhh-ed and ahhhh-ed at it. Funny thing. I didnt really care for it. In fact, this was TOTALLY one of those throw away pieces. When I made it I had every intention of going back to it in the leather hard greenware stage and fixing some of the issues I had with the form. But I didnt get to it, and the piece dried completely, flaws and all. So I figured, Ill just bisque fire it and use it as a glaze/decoration test. Why not? But the the wax resist brush stroke created a pretty nice design. Ill admit that. Of course, I cant help but look at what COULD have been. and now that I dont have access to a ceramic studio to do work, I cant re-make it. I have to live with it as is. Which, I guess, is a metaphor for life right now. We all have to sit a bit, shelter down and be happy with what we have. Im just glad to be here. And when this is all over...Im remaking his plate. The last few days were a little windy here as Hurricane Teddy passed off the coast. Wind makes me anxious, but I find so much enjoyment and peace watching birds soar in the updrafts and air currents. Теперь их несовершенство становится частью искусства.🤔 ⠀ Кинцуги подчёркивает, что сколы и трещины на посуде — это неотъемлемая часть её истории, которая не заслуживает быть забытой, ведь именно она делает её уникальной и единственной в своём роде. Таким образом несовершенство становится признаком идеальности.😯 ⠀ Философию кинцуги можно применить и к человеческой жизни. Людям хочется быть идеальными, но это невозможно.
