After Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968, Arthur Mitchell had his own dream, which was to form a top-notch ballet company that would shatter the myth that black bodies were not “right” for ballet. In a garage lent by the Harlem School of the Arts and with the support of his mentor Karel Shook (artistic director of Dutch National Ballet), he started a school. They left the doors open to attract young people from the street. To entice the boys there, Mitchell compared ballet to basketball, hired drummers instead of pianists to accompany the class, and allowed them to wear jeans. Within four months, Dance Theatre of Harlem school had 800 students, and the professional company debuted in 1971 at the Guggenheim Museum. It thrived for more than three decades, becoming one of the most sought-after dance companies in the world. Mitchell praised Balanchine for having an African American man dance with white ballerinas in the time of civil rights. He was very aware of the potential controversy of the central pas de deux in Agon -he created a startlingly modernist Agon pas de deux (choreographed for him and Diana Adams by George Balanchine) where the man manipulates the woman in ways that bring their bodies into unusual points of contact. “He used our skin tones as part of the choreography,” Mitchell said. “Like where I have my arm, or how I would take her foot.” As co-founder and artistic director of @dancetheatreofharlem Mitchell did not perform on stage, but his infectious energy made his mission come alive for those around him. One of his innovations was to replace pink tights and pointe shoes with those dyed to match each dancer’s skin colour, aligning the aesthetic with the Black Is Beautiful movement. ⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ 1st frame of @the_real_iman and Arthur Mitchell at the Dance Theatre of Harlem by Snowden. 3rd frame (rehearsing with George Balanchine) and the solo shots by Martha Swope. 🤍Arthur Adam Mitchell, dancer, choreographer and artistic director, 1934-2018.🤍 - @kaymontano on Instagram

“Dance is not an exercise. Dance is an art.” Alicia Alonso (1920-2019) was a Cuban ballet dancer who demonstrated extraordinary range & passion throughout her long career. Though perhaps best known for her dynamic portrayals of principal roles, especially “Giselle,” her leadership & lasting contributions to the dance community—even after significant vision loss—further elevated her legacy. Alonso was born in Havana, Cuba to parents Antonio Martínez & Ernestina Hoya, & was the youngest of four siblings. She studied dance as a child, but was not encouraged to pursue a professional career until she moved to New York in 1937 with her husband, Fernando. In New York, she appeared in several dance works including the Broadway musicals “Great Lady” (1938) & “Stars in Your Eyes.” (1939) She attended The School of American Ballet (@sab_nyc) & joined the Ballet Theatre (later renamed American Ballet Theatre) as a founding member in 1940. In 1942, after several surgeries for a detached retina, while on bedrest her teachers coached her through the steps of “Giselle” as she rehearsed mentally with her fingers. Later in her career, with further loss of her vision, she used the glare of the stage lights to guide her. She returned to Havana in 1948 & founded Ballet Alicia Alonso, later renamed the National Ballet of Cuba (@balletnacionaldecubaoficial). The company received wide acclaim, appearing in international tours & dance festivals. Although she continued to travel the world for performances with @abtofficial, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, & more, her passion for engaging with Cuba’s rich cultural community remained central. #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth 📸 Alicia Alonso in “Giselle.” Photo by Walter E. An image from a 1993 photo-essay that shows young gymnasts at Wuhan School of Sport where dozens of children with sporting prowess endured the harsh training that enabled them to become Olympic champions and bring international prestige to China. It was in the 1950s that Mao Zedong decided that sporting success was important to bring glory to China, so thousands of sports schools were established. These days winning at sport is even more important to the Chinese government and Beijing has a $2bn investment budget for the 2022 Winter Olympics and a $1.5bn operating budget ©1993 Tom Stoddart #sports #chinagymnastics #wuhan #dedication #china #blackandwhitephotography #photojournalism @gettyimages @verbatimphoto @beijing2022 @beijing_2022 - @tomstoddphotos on Instagram
