Back in April, we launched the Angaza Project, Kakenyas Dreams emergency response to the COVID-19 crisis. Through the Angaza Project, we deliver care packages containing vital supplies including food, feminine hygiene products, study materials, and solar lights and radios for distance learning to each of our students households. In May, we distributed the first round of care packages to our girls and their families. Another round of care packages was distributed in July, and our third round of distributions is happening now! I am a wife and a mother of 8 children. My mother, who is in her 80’s also lives with us and she is sickly. I also take care of Karanja, James and Alex who I have raised since they were very young boys. We all live here on this small piece of land that we were given by the government. Three of my children managed to finish high school and have moved out, two were not able to finish primary school because of limited finances, while the others are still ongoing with school. I live with most of my children here at home, and we have been trying to get them jobs so they can be independent. . The greatest kindness I have received has been from Flying Kites. They have educated Karanja, James and Alex, and my son, Maara, who was in Flying Kites Academy. For this I am truly grateful. . The biggest challenge I have felt is that I am not able to raise these children as I would have wished to, especially with the limitation of resources. I also cannot quite say I have yet experienced a day where I was truly happy. It is also really difficult for me to see that I am not in a position to help myself, let alone the children. Oftentimes, I receive help from my neighbors, they give me food, lately they have also supported me financially by paying for my medical bills as I have been sickly. My joints are in pain, I also get dizzy. The doctors are yet to find out what is happening to me. . It is really tough for me because I know I am financially unstable. Inspired by the generous donation of roofing sheets by His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin - The Waziri Hausa and Chairman of the Gobir Organization Foundation, Waziri Yakubu Gobir has donated relief materials worth 20 Million Naira to families affected by Saturday nights rainstorm in Ilorin. Presentation of the materials which included bundles of roofing sheets, cement blocks, wood planks and cash was made to chairmen of various Community Development Associations in Ilorin for onward distribution to affected citizens. A Prefeitura do Natal continua investindo na infraestrutura da Rede Municipal de Ensino. Estão em construção oito CMEIs e cinco Escolas de Ensino Fundamental. Também estão sendo reformadas e/ou ampliadas quatro unidades, e a acessibilidade de seis instituições de ensino. As duas próximas obras que serão entregues à população é o prédio próprio da Escola Municipal Professor José Melquíades de Macedo (Rua das Pedrinhas, 237, no bairro de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação), e um novo Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (na Rua Manoel Pacífico de Medeiros, em Nordelândia). Ambas já estão com 80% das obras em andamento, com previsão de conclusão para o final deste ano. UPDATE: This past week Rescate Playas Borinquen nonprofit invested $3,500 in maintenance and cleaning of the areas around the old Naval Buildings/ Ruins. We subcontracted the work, and the Department of Natural Resources was consulted before hand. Every year in February around “la candelaria” these areas are illegally lit on fire and all vegetation burns, hence there are no trees. For decades these areas were abandoned and used for illicit & illegal activities. Thanks to all of the improvements and maintenance we have done, things are much safer and accessible for the general public. If the areas are not maintained then they could loose the protection that cover them. Since 2013 we have singlehandedly been responsible for hundred of trees being planted and tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance. We look forward to having a clean and safe recreational area open to the public as is stipulated by the deed. ——————————— ACTUALIZACIÓN: La semana pasada, la organización sin fines de lucro Rescate Playas Borinquen invirtió $ 3,500 en mantenimiento y limpieza de las áreas alrededor de los antiguos edificios / ruinas navales. Given the tightness of the site, set in a busy and cluttered neighbourhood with a paucity of good vistas, the design opted to rather focus inwards, and create a cloistered ‘oasis of tranquillity’ in the midst of chaotic surroundings. The tight programming methodology employed for the Entry Foyer, Living Room, Staircase, Dining, and Kitchen, expressed itself in a seamless design-flow forming a near contiguous space but with nuanced articulation. The ensemble is further ‘tied together’ by the double-height volume above the Living Room and Staircase, enduing a sense of vastness and upliftment to this central zone of the building. A cement finish scheme was used for all walls of the house, while the ceiling was painted white. Natural terracotta floor tiles were then used to give a warm yet subtle contrast to the walls and ceiling. The Rat trap bond is a brick masonry method of wall construction in which bricks are placed in vertical position instead of conventional horizontal position and thus creating a cavity within the wall that increases thermal efficiency, cuts down on the total volume of bricks used and is ideal for concealing structural members and service ducts. The idea was further developed to form a series of slanting walls that danced left and right, converging only to support the ferrocement shell roof. Each staggered wall has been tailor-made to suit the issue of deficiency in space that this residence posed, aiming to create larger volumes and a feeling of privacy. The idea of this residence was to have an inward facing house with all its spaces opening into a funneling central courtyard. Scaffolding pipes left behind from the construction stage soon were reused to form the central staircase and the grillwork. Keeping in mind the principle of discarding nothing as ‘waste’ the wooden planks were also pieced together to form part of the flooring in the living areas. Alice, a mother of three, was violently attacked by her partner of 10 years after she asked him for money to buy food for their children. This was not the first time he had been violent towards her, but this time she reported him. IJM supported her through the prosecution, and the man who abused her pleaded guilty. Now, Alice is able to take care of her children on her own, and her focus is on building a good future. IJM helped her get a job at a local dairy, and she’s teaching her children what she believes a relationship between a man and woman should look like. In Northern Uganda, where Alice grew up, nearly 95.9% of women surveyed reported that violence against women and girls is happening in their communities (according to an IJM- UNDP report in 2019) “There will be a time when men will stop beating up their wives,” she said. “I see a future where men come to learn that even women have rights.” - @ijm on Instagram
