⭐️ #askrosie (string edition) 💁🏻♀️ It’s been two whole years since I first became an Augustine Strings Artist/Ambassador/Addict, and I haven’t stopped guzzling their strings since. ⭐️ I’ll never forget the day that I got a message through on my ‘Facebook artist page’ from the @augustinestrings artist liaison saying that they had watched my @openstringsberlin recordings and were interested in sending me some strings. 🌈 You know those moments that feel pivotal in life, well this was one of them. I had had a rough few years and I was honestly struggling with the notion of a life in music at all. 🌺 I was so nervous to release the Bach videos we had recorded because I was sure that people would be picking out the issues, suddenly discovering mistakes, things that couldn’t be changed. 🦋 That one message meant so much more than just getting strings, it was like a bolt from the blue ‘we believe in you’ ‘we support you’ ‘we want you on our team’. ☀️ It was the beginning of a new pattern in my life, that month I started my Instagram account, and discovered that in fact there is a whole world out there waiting to build you up instead of knock you down. 💕 We often think of success in this life as waiting for a leap of faith, but in my experience music is tiny steps of faith and you never fall because there is so much love here. There is always somebody ready to help you take that next step. ❤️ So thanks to Augustine, you’re so much more than a string manufacturer to me and you always will be 🦄 . The Izzy Dress (coming soon) was inspired by when I lived in San Francisco back in my early 20s. ⚡️ MY STORY ⚡️ I was only intending to write an introduction post today. However, I felt compelled to share for the first time (in writing) my story - how I got involved in this business. My name is Kaylee Nicole Battaglia Lanier, and I live in southwest Louisiana. I am 24 years old, married to my best friend, and a mother to two rescued fur babies. ❤️ I am a registered veterinary technician, and made the tough decision to leave veterinary medicine for the time being after battling cycles of depression and panic attacks caused by the oral contraceptive I was taking. I am now myself again, and I have such respect for those that battle these things daily. ❤️ Before stepping down from the field I had worked hard to gain credentials in, I found polymer clay. Like many others, it started as an outlet for me. But while discussing my decision to leave my job, I said to my husband through tears... “I really think I can do this. I really think I can make this a business.” That was nearly eight months ago. Did clay save me? No. My God preserved me and kept me from acting on the desperate thoughts I had. I am thankful for His protection every day. I am thankful for my husband and his understanding when I told him how I was feeling. I am thankful that I became aware of what was causing my pain and was able to stop it. Not everyone has that privilege. Clay didn’t save me. I got it at garage sale for 50 cents!” and someone else was like “you shouldn’t say that so loud...”. nowadays it’s the cool thing to do and it’s considered vintage and someone would respond “no way, that’s so awesome!!!”. I had just turned 21 in April 2015 and was getting ready to record my third album. Don’t get me wrong. This pandemic sucks. Tremendously. But it has also forced me into a mindset that might have taken me years or even decades to accomplish. Who else is upping their cooking, learning, savings, and empathy game!?! We’re all doing our best. Ron and I put our belongings in storage, leased out our condo, and got our businesses functioning remotely. For the next few months we’ll be road tripping to Vegas, Boise, Seattle, Portland, Napa, and finally staying with my parents in Honolulu. Our goal is to end up back to where we started in LA by next year but for now, we’re embracing nomadic adventure! Doing a trip like this is something we only thought possible after retirement. Is there one path to success❓ I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently. The reality is that my goal is to make a career out of what I love to do. And we’ve been taught that success in this kind of career, and really in life, is amassing a huge following and getting paid 💰💰💰to create content. Sounds like a dream. But in truth, that also is quite a high barrier to entry. And I’ve realized that it’s not the only way to make it happen. We’ve got options. I’ve been able to create sponsored content to share with you, get behind the camera and create content for other partners, mentor, and consult. All things that I didn’t know were possible. Allowing my path to diverge in this way has shifted what success feels like to me. So I guess what I’m saying is that there might not just be one way to your end goal. And as you try to work for it, it may take some flexibility to get there. Flex and flow with it. 60 days. Anyone know what it’s like to desperately want to share something - a thought, an idea, a photo, a song - and look up to realize you’ve spent days/months/years trying to compose something that just “isn’t good enough?” Well, that’s me tonight, writing this post and that’s been me my whole life with this damn dream of mine. & What I was originally trying to say was that I only have 60 days left in my twenties and there’s a lot that did/didn’t happen: I didn’t get married, I didn’t finish my degree, I barely even started “my career.” But I survived the loss of my brother and I fiercely birthed a beautiful, strong willed daughter. And after 5 years of longing/weeping over and manifesting it, I reconnected with the love of my life. Only to feel unworthy of, self-sabotage and lose him again. I doubted, questioned, found and thanked God. And I wrote a crapload of songs I was (until semi-recently) too scared to share with the world. I gained my independence and have supported my daughter and myself which, at one time seemed impossible. Lately, though, I’ve been too fixated on how much I still want to accomplish in my life and am panicking like I only have 60 more days to get it done. Every year, I say “I want to have accomplished xyz” and every year I make the deadline my birthday. So fun and celebratory! 🙄 Why would this year be any different? So buckle up and brace yourselves cause I’ve got one birthday wish and it’s to share more of my songs (and my story) no matter what. You can hear what I’ve released so far at the link in my bio. Gene Autry was born in a farmhouse near Tioga, Texas, on September 29, 1907. His national success as a singing cowboy helped alter the image of what had been known as “hillbilly” music. His focus on western songs and attire created a market for “country & western” performers, and his status as a top box-office attraction in motion pictures brought his music to the attention of a vast audience otherwise unfamiliar with country music. Autry was born the son of an itinerant horse trader and sometime bootlegger. He started singing at age five in his grandfather’s Baptist church. In 1928, Autry began a stint as “Oklahoma’s Yodeling Cowboy” at Tulsa radio station KVOO, and went to Manhattan in 1929 to make his first records. His breakthrough came with the plaintive ballad “That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine,” which he co-wrote and recorded for the American Record Corporation. In 1931, Autry moved to Chicago to star on the WLS National Barn Dance. There, he honed his western image and focused on cowboy songs, and in 1934, moved to film. Beginning with Tumbling Tumbleweeds (1935), his work became the prototype for the musical western, while the songs featured in his motion pictures became hits. Over four decades, Autry recorded some 600 sides, half of which he was credited with writing. “Back in the Saddle Again” and many others have become western standards. Autry was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969. So thankful for this special handmade gift from my friend Ace out in Oklahoma. You guys have heard him & my other friend Jesse at the end of “White Noise/White Lines”. Each bead and symbol means something, this band tells a story. It is tied together with brain tanned deer hide he did himself. He surprised me with the John Prine “JP” initials to hold with me as well. I kept it on my stand all weekend while in the studio to keep John’s memory close to me. As Ace said, “these beads and this story will last longer than both of us, and that’s why they were so important to us (the Chickasaw) and that’s why I wanted you to have it”.
