Its highly debated whether he preceded the Brothers Wright in the first flight of a practical airplane.

This is a photo my friend @threepeonies took of me in Decatur, Atlanta in 2009. It was outside a Mexican restaurant we had gone to for lunch. The dog wasn’t with us and from memory I wasn’t as smitten with the poochies as I am now so it’s likely that it went un-patted 😭 I spent 3 months in Decatur on an internship with @pastemagazine. It has felt to me like that trip altered my life. It had been a stressful couple of years prior and so three months away from everything I knew couldn’t have come at a better time. I had been dating my wife for about 2/3 years at this point. We had lived together pretty much straight away and this was the longest time we had been apart since we had started dating. While I had been away she had moved to Dublin for a job with RTE so life was really changing a lot at this point, maybe more than it ever has. She saved up and was coming to visit. I hadn’t told her she was flying into the worlds busiest airport and the first one I had experienced where you collect your bags and then re-submit them through security before you leave. Still don’t understand the point of that. Needless to say when we finally met at the airport she was 90mins late getting to me and in floods of tears. A little bit of tension in the air from both parties. While we were living our lives in those days Michael Jackson had just given a press conference announcing the “This Is It” residency. Hannah innocently mentioned how the press had been saying it was an impersonator and not MJ giving the press conference. For whatever reason this really got to me and instead of being loved up I went into a rant about it and we had a negative + sour trip back from the airport in near silence. Who knows why this happened. Remarkable really. When she was leaving a week later love or something was palpable and we were sobbing in the same place in each others arms. I have never cried more in my life. Floods of tears. Endless. A man playing the piano in the background. She since said she was sobbing on the plane too. A deep release had occurred which I can still feel at times. - @mrbabysweet on Instagram

Happy Birthday, William Faulkner! The man, the myth, the legend was born on this day in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. While his home in Oxford, Rowan Oak, is currently closed to the public, the grounds and nearby Bailey Woods Trail are open from dawn until dusk daily. #williamfaulkner #rowanoak #oxfordms #olemiss #onthisday #happybirthday #hbd @visitoxfordms @cityofoxfordms @olemiss - @ummuseum on Instagram
