The oldest post office in northern India (GPO) in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh was built in 1882 on a land that was bought from one Patterson. Because there was a large community of British and Indians lived in the beautiful hill station of Shimla and adjacent places, the post office came up for their convenience. Earlier that place was known as Conny Cottage. The first Post Master happened to be one F. Dalton and by the same token the last British Post Master who retired in December 1946 was L. G. Piggot. One A. K. Hazari took the credit of being the first Indian Post Master after Indias independence in August 1947. This impressive historical three storeyed building, a good example of English Hill architecture with hollow bricks and stone, is a wooden building with tin-roof. Mostly, high quality wood was used to withstand the severe cold and snow conditions in the Winter. Built in a peculiar style, blending Gothic, Alphine and Tudor elements, it was an important land mark in the hill station, frequented by the people. The early history of the postal service in this part of the hill before the laying of proper road and railroad is quite interesting. The mail was sent through dak gari from Kalka to Ambala and from here it was sent to other destinations. Ponies, elephants and horses were found useful to transport mails. Mails were promptly delivered to the people using Tonga delivery system. It is believed that the GPO at Shimla does not give up the old tradition and it is still being retained by them. In Search of A (Then) Record Store Never knew Sion had a record store known as Radioghar until I bunk a lecture with my friend Anil Vishwakarma back in 2015 while we were in the First Year studying Mass Media. Spent most my of life in Sion; School, friends, just everything but always overlooked this cute Music shop next to Peninsula, which used to sell cassettes and Cds. The time when we went to Radioghar, I was like god fuckin damn the store was in Sion and I discovered it today? I couldnt believe that The person who attended us said, Dukan Kuch hi dino me hamesha ke liye band hone wali hai. Tum yaha paili baar aye ho na?. I nod saying yes! Turned back looked all over the rack to fill my cart with maximum CDs but I ran out of luck cuz all I could find was Akons Trouble (2009 packed) and Bombay Rockers Crash & Burn while rest were Bollywood and some Indi pop. I wanted to buy both Bombay Rockers as well Akon but couldnt afford both at that very time, so I coped Trouble. The attendant played it on his Dvd player for a sound check. My last words with the attendant were Uncle, me firse aane anewala hoon bohot jaldi he smiled and replied Zaroor aaiye kabhi bhi, lekin dukaan kabhi bhi band ho sakti hai. He wasnt playing. A few months later Professional Currier took over the place. Protests and candle marches were held in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Maharashtra on 30 September after the Uttar Pradesh Police forcibly cremated the body of the Hathras assault victim in the dead of the night on 29 September. Intense outrage poured in from social media, alongside Opposition leaders in the state who sought CM Yogi Adityanaths resignation over the issue. The Opposition also alleged that the the forced cremation of the 19-year-old Dalit girl was an attempt to destroy evidence. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognisance of the sexual assault and sent notices to the Chief Secretary of the state government and the UP Deputy General of Police. Local reports from Hathras stated that tempers ran high in the victims village when Panchayti Raj Minister Bhupendra Chaudhary, who is also in-charge of the district, reached there along with the local MP, MLA and other BJP leaders. Besides justice for the victim and capital punishment to the culprits, the locals also demanded a transfer of district officials. Opposition party workers in the state reportedly clashed with the police in some parts, while sanitation workers in some parts announced no sanitation strikes demanding justice for the Dalit victim. Congress workers staged protests in Hathras, Lucknow, Azamgarh, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, and Varanasi, among others, according to reports. A candlelight march was taken out on the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus and a large number of students handed over a memorandum addressed to the president to the city magistrate. In Maharashtra, Congress workers took out a candlelight march from Dr BR Ambedkars statue to Central Library in Mumbai in protest of the assault. According to ANI, Congress workers also staged protests outside the West Bengal Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. Protests were also held in Delhi near the India Gate by All India Students Association and Bhim Army. The protestors present at the spot were detained by the police. Blast from the past, when we could visit one of my favorite Buddhist Monasteries in Woodstock. I did pass by there this summer, just in case, but it was closed to the public. On my mind is the topic of people pleasing. This is something that unfortunately comes natural to many women. I spent most of my life people pleasing, until I woke up. But it took way too damn long! We dont say what we mean because we feel bad. We dont want to hurt others feelings. Instead, we go above and beyond for others and we are unsatisfied and even mad at what unfolds. Here are my Five consequences of people pleasing....does this sound familiar? • Consistently disappointing yourself and others • Inner resentful feelings overflow • You become a known a a flake...AKA..Dont follow through properly. • You are stressed the hell out. • Over promise religiously. Always saying YES does you NO good. What you deliver is never top quality when your heart isnt in it. Here are two questions to ask yourself right before you make a decision to put others before yourself.. 1) What are the consequences of doing this action or saying something to please others when its not in my best interest? 2) What do I need to take care of myself when I receive anger, objections or disappointment? The first step is awareness. Next step. Make a different decision. Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner. ⛰️One of the things that I miss about the mountains; these colorful patches of prayer flags strung from tree to tree 🌲 . 🧗♀️The higher we hike, the more prayer flags appear, until it seems, the entire sky is strung with long kites of colourful flags, the pattern repeated again and again, by the hundreds and thousands—a million fluttering prayer flags across the rocky path, and then across the open chasms of the Himalayas . 5️⃣ The flags come in five different colours – blue, red, green, white and yellow. Each colour represents the five wisdoms of Buddhism and the five basic elements – sky, fire, earth, water and air. Buddhists believe that keeping these five elements in good harmony is good for the body and mind . 🧡 The yellow prayer flag is for victory over obstacles ❤️ The red prayer flag is for fulfilling your wishes . 🕊️ These flags are believed to spread peace and harmony with the flowing air... There, in front of my eyes was a snow leopard, hanging from the wall, it had big scary eyes drawn on its face, looking directly into my soul. After the shock of a first few seconds we started to laugh, he got me, and he paid for that with a punch on his arm. Then we teamed up and pranked all of our other friends one by one. 🤭 . Note: It is said that this snow leopard was killed by the locals to defend their village, but afterwards unexplained scary occurrences started to take place in the village. So to repent for their actions, they preserved and placed the body of the leopard in the monastery and now it is forbidden to kill a snow leopard in this region. The monastery is located at an altitude of 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) in the Indus Valley. It is a twelve-storey complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, wall paintings and swords. One of the main points of interest is the Maitreya Temple erected to commemorate visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970. It contains a 15 metres (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya Buddha, the largest such statue in Ladakh, covering two stories of the building. He is unusually portrayed as seated in the lotus position rather than his usual representations as standing or in a sitting posture on a high throne. It is the largest Buddha statue in the monastery, and took four years to build. I couldn’t stop squinting from all of the bright colors! Batu Cave Temple just outside of Kuala Lumpur was breathtaking today. It features the tallest statue of a Hindu deity in Malaysia, and it is so beautiful and vibrant.
