My beautiful Mother in Law, Teresa danced her way into heaven yesterday. I’ve never met a more courageous, warrior of a woman. She was such a beam of shimmering turquoise light. She WAS the party. You needed something fixed? Boom. Done. You need a feast to feed 12? No prob. A drawing so good that could be sold in a gallery? Check! Need a singer for an event? She has it handled. Oh and a drummer? No worries, she has a closet filled with djembe’s. She could dance you under the table at a party. She could keep you laughing til it hurts. She could do anything. Her biggest accomplishment? Her 4 children. Marcel, Clyde, Crystal and Tessa. They are so special and I see so much of her in each one of them. Ok I have had one of the worst days today so I really need to rant and this post might be really long bc Ive been keeping this in for forever. I am so fed up with people leaving me out for another friend when were already hanging out. I understand shes probably better than me and prettier than me and skinnier than me, but that doesnt mean Im not human. I have feelings and when Im cut out from the group it makes me feel like an outcast. I have told only one person about all of this but they still dont notice that they have been doing it too ( and theyre prob going to read this so hi now you know). When I was at the lunch table today I had to put in my earphones and listen to music to avoid looking like an idiot with no one talking to me, and I almost cried. People have asked me if somethings wrong and I usually say Im okay, but when I didnt care anymore I told them no, but never said the story, because it wasnt important, because it isnt. I used to have a best friend, and then she left me for my other best friend. Every time I would walk toward her with my other best friend she would hug her and just ignore me. I try to get into conversations and jokes and stuff but I keep getting rejected. I just cant deal with this anymore and I just want it to go away. Im done with being depressed all the time because of who I am and what I look like but I cant because everyone wont stop rejecting me. Also I tried hugging my guy friend and now everyone thinks I like him like no fuck you I just needed a hug. If you think hugging someone means that you like them then I like a lot of people so calm down. I just want a do over. WN Part 1/2: A few days ago, my dear friend @wendynichol launched her new line for 2020. She is such a powerful force, an enterprise of her own creation, an inspiration. Not only does she design and create magical pieces that become part of her clientele’s identity, but she is so incredibly generous and giving. I feel very fortunate to have borrowed pieces from her collection, admiring others from afar, and having some very special ones to call my own. From the earrings that adorn my ears, the black purse I carry everywhere, velvet and silk dusters and jackets that keep me warm, and special dresses and outfits for stage and performing. On my 30th birthday she gave me a ring with an ‘S’ engraved in it - a token to start a decade which would be filled with more chaos, turmoil, and love than I could have ever imagined. In this new line, Wendy has modeled the pieces on her own, and shows what a force of nature and power lies within us all. My name is Nona, a 34 year old singular entity behind each photo/video I post on here -A corpus of experiences, dreams, mistakes, and aspirations, born and raised in Beverwijk, the Netherlands. Currently residing in Amsterdam. A worshipper of the old beliefs, and the wild -fiercely passionate about music, art, the ancient worlds, the unattainable, handwritten letters, and meaningful conversations with intriguing minds. An earth and animal protection advocate, and admirer of all outspoken (wo)men, independent spirits, and nonconformists. I got caught up in the frenzy of photography at the age of 15. As a kid I was an excessive daydreamer with a restless mind, easily bored with mundane life. I wanted to create my own worlds by mixing the legitimately good with the delightfully terrible, a combination I found absolutely irresistible. I am completely self-taught, and had to figure out everything myself through years of trial and error. Photography wasn’t my only passion. Throughout the years I have come to learn that a tremendous amount of people felt alone, unheard, and fearful. I wanted to help and support those in need. At nineteen, I studied social work and ended up with a degree in Psychiatry. For more than a decade I thoroughly enjoyed my work as a therapist. To be able to accompany people on their journey of self-understanding/healing truly was a privilege. Now it’s been more than 1,5 years since I gave up my monthly paycheck and walked out of my psychotherapist job to start pursuing my photography business full time. I remember feeling uncomfortable choosing a path for myself after helping people as a profession for so long. However, I still deeply feel this is the path that I am supposed to be on at this point in my life. To anyone out there who feels stuck in a rut and is struggling to break free, it is never too late. Find your niche space, trust your voyage and see what you are passionate about. There is no 1 correct answer in life and no 1 right path. What matters most is to stay true to your authentic self. Happy Tenth Anniversary @magalicharron ! Here we are at our City Hall wedding in 2010, photographed by our dear friend and only witness, Hannah Thompson. Just kids before Alaska, Caged Animals, and the dozen lives we’ve lived between. This day was beautiful but bittersweet. On one level it was thrilling and romantic, on another it was a strange expression of practicality. But nevertheless here we were, preserving our relationship the best way we could, with an emergency City Hall wedding! We had just had a nightmare border crossing where our internationally vagrant love story was being brought under fire. We sat at the Houlton, Maine border crossing for hours, interrogated separately, and ultimately turned away from the US. Reality had caught up to our two year dream. Moments after re-entering Canada I got down on one knee on the side of the highway, a mood ring in my hand and I proposed. It was raining, I put my knee right into a puddle. My emotions were riding high but I saw our relationship crystal clear and it wasn’t meant to end at the Houlton border. We finagled our way back into the USA and began to make plans. We debated a while but eventually donned our best threads and rode the train to City Hall. Now I know this wasn’t the wedding Magali probably dreamed about when she was a little girl. But when I look back at Hannah’s photos all I see is the beauty and honesty of that moment. Two kids making a pact, one on one. En esta reflexión que hoy titulo cuarentena me encuentro con un arsenal de etiquetas que observo con desapego y sospecha. Es que si realmente nos detenemos a mirar, todo está en movimiento constante e irrefrenable. Quién puede afirmar “Yo soy así”? Quién no se transforma por su propia voluntad o a la fuerza? Quién se sabe tan impenetrable? En estos 78 días de deliberación, puedo afirmar que reviví, renací y resucité incontadas veces. Quise reír, quise hacer reír, quise que me hagan reír. Quise callar, quise hablar, quise cantar, quise escuchar. Quise correr, quise encallar. Quise comer, quise parar. Quise gritar, quise pausar, quise sanar. Quise sentir, quise explotar, quise volverme a reír, a hacer reír, a que me hagan. Puedo delinear un humilde boceto de aquello que creo (o necesito?) me identifica, con la absoluta certeza de saber que no hay contrato fehaciente que dure años en esta materia del “yo soy”. Pero lo que sí puedo escribir en letras grandes es que me reconozco en el humano auténtico, apasionado y vital. Aquellos rebeldes con causa, sobrevivientes, resilentes. Aquellos a los que el abandono los hizo multiplicarse en miles. Me reconozco en los locos, que sedientos de verdad construyeron una realidad paralela. Aquellos de los que siempre se habla, porque emanan vitalidad a los muertos en vida. A los inconformistas que laboriosos se volvieron conformes. A todos los excéntricos, mi adorada especie. A los intensos, que a juzgar por la palabra mediocre nos intentan hacer creer que semejante palabra vigorosa podría tener una connotación negativa. Arrojar palabras al universo (que en esta aplicación denominamos “ínstagram”) conlleva un acto entusiasta y adhesivo. Hace algunos años apoyé mis ojos en una frase inscripta en una pared de La Habana, Cuba: “La verdad, una vez despierta, jamas volverá a dormirse”. Just found this on EBay...the Fall Sears Catalogue (the huge one)! This cover was unusual because it was shot in Bergamo Italy. We actually got to shoot all over Italy and two weeks in Turkey. C’est peu de dire que j’adorais #JulietteGreco. Je ladore. Elle venait régulièrement donner des concerts en #Corse – son père l’était – et ma famille était amie avec celle de l’un de ses musiciens, Barthy Raffo – qui nous hélas quitté, lui aussi, en 2014 –, de sorte que nous n’en rations aucun. Je lui trouvais à la fois une stature impressionnante, un chic fou et une forme de tendresse fondamentale qui la rendait si présente à l’instant et à la beauté, en connexion avec l’innocence, l’enfance, la vulnérabilité. La façon qu’elle avait de placer son corps, ses mains qui dessinaient une chorégraphie autour de son visage pendant qu’elle chantait, comme une partition subtile. Les #chansons qu’elle interprétait, à la fois cruelles et sensuelles, pleines d’esprit ; de mélancolie, aussi. Le timbre qui rendait aérien le grave. J’ai soigneusement enregistré dans ma mémoire chacun de ces moments-là. Je savais qu’elle serait une sorte de modèle, sans vraiment en détailler les raisons, à l’époque, il n’y avait que de l’intuition, mais bien sûr : la femme debout, passionnée, libre, si libre, intense, sensible, indocile, qui fait du sang de ses blessures la couleur vibrante du chant et de l’émotion. À la fois mémoire et goût vorace de la vie, du moment présent. Cette beauté qui est encore pire que la beauté – car elle n’oublie jamais l’abîme. Un jour, je devais avoir 5 ou 6 ans, elle m’a dit : « Tiens, c’est toi qui vas choisir ma robe pour le concert de ce soir ! » et elle a ouvert un placard. Je me suis renfrognée en disant que je n’aimais pas trop qu’on se moque de moi… Ma mère était pétrifiée, je venais quand même d’envoyer bouler Juliette Gréco… Mais la grande dame qui semblait vivre en #noir et blanc a éclaté de rire : il n’y avait que des robes noires, c’est-à-dire, pour une petite fille, toutes les mêmes. @evawalker13 Cyanotype print I’ve been unsure recently how, when, or why I would post again. I didn’t want to take away from what is going on and couldn’t quite frame my feelings in a way that was any different or more constructive than what I was already hearing. This all coincided with taking more time away from Instagram than I have since I started this account… whoo-boy that has been refreshing. Back to my original point, even now I’m a little weary of popping my head in and being like “hey look at me!” I think there was a moment when it was definitely inappropriate to say “look at me” and the longer I lived in that fear of appearing to steal the spotlight for something trivial, the easier it was to convince myself that perhaps I just won’t post at all. Then I remembered a year ago when we were all coming to terms with another human rights crisis at the border. I didn’t really know how to post then as I don’t now. Back then I sold some prints and donated the money to the ACLU, I’d be open to doing that again if people are interested. Ultimately what I’m coming to terms with is that the world is complex and that if you point your finger in any direction you’re going to find a really horrific crisis occurring and unfortunately you can’t take them one at a time, they each must be accepted all at once. But in this moment right now I truly believe that proving that Black Lives Matter is one important piece to a house of cards that must fall and when the dust settles it will pave the way to a new way of living and loving. Oh hey, its me again. I havent been real timely getting back to messages and Ive been remiss in my online attendance. I apologize if you havent heard back from me. Its not you, its me. Actually, its not me so much as it is chronic migraines, a benign #meningioma brain tumor, and a daily path towards acceptance of it. Im gonna be fine, but maybe dealing with different stuff then I had planned - like radiation. Ill find out Monday. Im also in a place of thinking, who really needs to hear from ME while the world burns and is (hopefully) recreated anew? We should be looking outward instead of downwards at our phones at the antics and hijinx of small-time entertainers. Is it escape and distraction from what really needs our attention now? But then it was also suggested to me by a voice *outside* my head that I actually can be of help to a few people, making em laff or even think here and there, and I hope that is a true statement. It certainly was a kind statement. Ive had some weird days when it feels like I literally cant think and like my head is full of baby vomit (thx Mortuary Academy and @omarpopscene for that one), but Im trying not to give in to the mental void, not to check out. The final wave of our Sisu Core DJ crew is here. We are blessed with the amazing Milly on Air and Clarabelle. Milly on Air’s sound is focussed on fresh underground UK club music with a distinct old school vibe. Inspired equally by new experimental sounds as by the Chicago House and 90s rave mixtapes that she fell in love with as a youth, a typical club set will take you on a euphoric trip through ambient, acid house, percussive techno and UK hardcore infused breaks. Clarabelle is a Birmingham born n bred DJ who started her journey in the industry through creating her event brand and record label Tunnel Vision and hosting events across Brum and Bristol. Recently she has taken to the decks as a new way to share her favourite tracks and artists. Her sets are not limited by a certain genre, as she simply plays the music she enjoys and wants to share with other people. We want to help artists develop during their time as a Sisu Core DJ by assisting with artist goals and aspirations. We’ve decided to start our 12 month core DJ programme from September 7th 2020 - September 7th 2021. From September 7th 2021 we will be welcoming new artist submissions. I have been mistreated for many different things, to the point I was becoming like them, and starting to think I wasn’t worthy of anything, that I should have been less smart or visible to be less of a threat.
