November 2015, five months after graduating nursing school and about two months into my job as a hospice nurse, I called the suicide hotline. I had spent the past several months working night shift at a hospice center. Over those few months, my self-esteem, anxiety and self-worth completely fell away. When I got the job, I was elated. End of life care was, and is, something that I am deeply passionate about. Bearing witness and caring for someone, along with their family, at those moments, is to me an honor and a gift. Night shift was brutal on my body- I never felt like I could catch up and constantly felt like I was in a fog. I made mistakes: the biggest of these were med errors that I would catch myself and, horrified, self report. I felt like I was short-circuiting: the interface that I had to work with to see what meds to give and their dosages was on an iPad that I found impossible to read. I couldn’t enlarge the font and my eyes would seem to skip the lines, mixing up dosages and times. Management met with me and placed me on probation. After making two such errors, I was told that if I made another one I would be fired and they would report me to the state. I have never felt more like a failure in my life. I started to visualize driving off the bridge that I had to cross to and from work. At 0300 in the morning I would go hide in the dark of one of the offices, stuffing my fist in my mouth while I cried. I was terrified that I would make another mistake, that I would hurt one of my patients. I felt that all I had worked for for the past four years, to become a nurse, was all for nothing. Nursing was all I aspired to, and in a very sick way, represented to me overcoming the obstacle of my own illnesses. I deeply cared about my patients and couldn’t live with the idea that I might harm them. I thought I was an unsafe nurse. One night before another shift, yet another night I hadn’t been able to sleep, I found myself myself sobbing, in the bathtub, with a knife. The idea of continuing to live caused me immeasurable pain.
