I’ve spent all day trying to think of what to say about Michael. He was so much for me: professor, mentor, surrogate-grandfather, best friend. It’s impossible to put into words what he meant to me. And as I read the outpouring of love from former students, colleagues & friends of his, it’s clear that I’m not alone. Michael was special to everyone. He was kind, loving, playful, wise and funny as hell. I spoke with him regularly up until he couldn’t speak anymore, and even at the bitter end he was cracking jokes. “I am becoming less intelligible but more amusing,” he would say. He loved his students. He hated having to retire because it meant he wouldn’t be able to hang out on campus anymore. Well, Michael, you’ve got all the freedom in the world now. You can hang out with us whenever you want. We lost one of the greats yesterday, but he lives on in the thousands of lives he changed. I love you, Michael. We love you. - @danielrashid on Instagram

W I L D E W A N D E R U N G ⠀⠀ Mit euch raus in die Natur zu gehen ist immer wieder eines unserer liebsten Highlights. Gemeinsam Wildkräuter zu entdecken, zu bestimmen und dann auch direkt zu nutzen. Am Ende finden wir uns zu einer gemütliche Picknick-Runde ein, reflektieren das Gelernte und genießen die wilden Köstlichkeiten. Oft fällt dabei auf, dass selbst die, die vorher gar keine Berührungspunkte mit dem Thema hatten, plötzlich mit gesenktem Blick neugierig über die Wiese wandern. Spitzwegerich gegen den fiesen Mückenstich pflücken und etwas Schafgarbe nach dem Essen knabbern. ⠀⠀ Es ist wunderbar zu hören, dass ihr „jetzt mit einem ganz anderen Blick durch die Natur lauft“ und „Wildkräuter nun einfach überall entdeckt“. The Aurora Centre, our specialist, non-residential FE centre for young adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities, is pleased to have welcomed back 100% of its students. They are attending a work placement at Farm Road Pavilion for two days a week, an outside space where theyve been working hard to create a nature trail and clear an area for 460 trees, which will be donated by the Woodland Trust. The physical activity helps to support the sensory regulation of many students. The group was also joined by a number of other students who tried this type of work for the first time, which meant their peers back in college had a bit more space to socially distance. Imagine today.. a sunny day, but then 400 years ago: 16 September 1620. On this day, the Pilgrims (a group of English Puritans) set sail from the port in Plymouth (UK) on a ship called the Mayflower, to travel to the free colonies in Massachusetts (US). Like today, it was sunny apparently. But the voyage of the Pilgrims across the transatlantic was harsh. It took them 66 days, as they left the UK in September their crossing was afflicted by winter storms and seasickness. The Pilgrims had already been travelling for a long time. To escape religious persecution, they decided to flee England for the Netherlands from 1609 onwards - back in the days, the Dutch republic was seen as a liberal nation where they could live peacefully. The Pilgrims settled in Leiden, where they lived and worked for 12 years. They built houses in what is today known as Engelse poort (English Alley). Another astonishing fact that shows just how much impact the arrival of these European settlers has had on America: no less than nine US presidents are descendants of these Leiden Pilgrims. Throughout 2020, museums in the Dutch cities of Leiden and Rotterdam - as in the UK and the US - are dedicating exhibitions to the Mayflower. The commemoration is not solely focused on the time the Pilgrims spent in the Netherlands or their stories on the boat. The perspectives of Native American communities on the consequences of the arrival of the Pilgrims form an integral part of the story. Today, our Ambassador Karel van Oosterom joined the commemoration ceremony in Plymouth, together with the US Ambassador in the UK, Admiral Tony Radakin (First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy) and online representation of the Wampanoag. The crew of IBM and MSubs also joint - who built a new autonomous vessel, powered by AI and energy from the sun, bearing the same name as the old Mayflower. This vessel was taken to water for the first time, opening doors for the future of shopping and oceanography. El MAC celebra la vida y obra del poeta y artista Esteban Valdés Arzate (1947 - 2020) y se solidariza con su familia y amistades. Criado entre la Ciudad de México, Nueva York, y Río Piedras, su comienzo en la poesía se dio a mediados de 1964. Influenciado por la poesía concreta, sus poemas se convierten en piezas de arte visual, tanto como literarias, adentrándose en terrenos del arte conceptual. A lo largo de su vida, Valdés se involucró con movimientos a favor de la independencia de Puerto Rico, y desarrolló un pensamiento anarquista que afectó en gran medida su producción artística. Valdés fue un artista del cuestionamiento de los medios y de la crisis del signo tanto como del poder estético y del humor en relación al trabajo político.    En los años setenta co-fundó la revista/cartel Alicia La Roja y publicó Fuera de Trabajo (1977) con la editorial qeAse. El primer libro de poesía concreta en Puerto Rico, este contiene poesía visual, además de instrucciones para crear esculturas y acciones. En los años ochentas colaboró con La Mueca, un periódico satírico clandestino, en la editorial La Iguana Dorada, y organizó los Encuentros Nacionales de Poetas durante la década de los noventa y años subsiguientes. Anarcosindicalista declarado, en 1984 participó de la fundación de la Hermandad de Empleados del Departamento del Trabajo, siendo Secretario de Organización y Presidente. Fue delegado principal de la Unión General de Trabajadores hasta 2007. Junto a Néstor Barreto, co-fundó la editorial Colección Maravilla. Es autor de La Otra PueRta (2011) y En 1 País Tropical (2020). Participó en exposiciones en Argentina, Perú, Brasil, Rusia y Puerto Rico. Fuera de Trabajo forma parte de la colección del @museo_la_ene. En 2016 fue artista homenajeado de la 2da Gran Bienal Tropical. En 2020 se reimprimió Fuera de Trabajo, una co-edición entre @tallerdeedicioneseconomicas y @beta_local, que contó con la colaboración de Esteban, Nicolás Pradilla, Sofía Gallisá Muriente y Marina Reyes Franco, Curadora del MAC.    Esteban Valdés Arzate fue un gran artista que se agenció su libertad, superando nociones simplistas de la diferencia entre hacer arte y hacer política. This article upsets me. 1) Stop copying me @chefthomaskeller ! 😜 2) TFL Is a place that inspires generations of chefs across the country. It is a place that supports local farmers, craftsman, artists, and pushes everyone to dream big and reach new heights and possibilities. These dreamers that TFL have inspired are generally not wealthy, and this makes a mockery of everyone’s profession that they take great pride in. Places like TFL take a life of its own, with so many more dimensions than simply being a playground for the rich. Kyōten and countless other restaurants, perhaps even your own job, don’t exist without TFL laying the groundwork for it. 3) I’m sure my local Popeye’s with their consistently full drive-thru makes more revenue than TFL does serving 3 tables a night. This is not a place that is taking advantage of anyone, and certainly not a place that will ‘take those people’s money and run’. They are a business trying to make it through and have every right to receive support from their clientele for doing incredible work over decades and decades. 4) I’m open to have any dialogue about this Eater. We are receiving many inquiries regarding the status of our fitness centers, especially since Governor Ducey, ADHS and the State of Arizona allowed EOS Fitness and one additional business to reopen. We want to be sure our community, valued members and supporters are aware we have exhausted all avenues provided to us by the parties above to apply for reopening. We promptly submitted a Request for Formal Settlement Conference on August 11, 2020, multiple Applications for Requests to Reopen, and documentation describing the “additional steps we are committed to taking beyond the guidelines and benchmarks” provided by ADHS. The only responses we have received are automated messages informing us our request is premature because Maricopa County has not met the community transmission metrics. To the best of our knowledge, EOS Fitness has not made any additional commitments beyond ours. We don’t understand why they have been allowed to reopen in Maricopa County. This appears to be an arbitrary decision. We are angry and frustrated and want nothing more than to reopen and serve our members. We expect other small, private, boutique fitness centers like ours feel the same way. We will look for opportunities to unite and fight this unfortunate, unfair and legally questionable situation, including getting our community involved in an appeal to the Governor to take fair and consistent action. We will keep you informed of our progress throughout the week. Alex knew his drug misuse was spiraling out of control, but he never saw himself as an addict. Until one day, nearly seven years ago — by chance — the 41-year-old Boston transplant came upon a Narcotics Anonymous meeting within Berkshire County. Alex — he asked that his last name not be used — decided to join the gathering and see what NA was all about. The decision to learn about the 12-step program for people with varied substance use problems likely was a lifesaver. By the very first meeting, I knew I was an addict, he told an Eagle reporter. Alex says he has been clean and sober since then, with the help of Bob, a North Adams man in recovery through NA for the past 34 years. Alex and Bob were extolling the effectiveness of NA and telling their stories to those taking part in the Voices of Recovery self-guided tour Saturday. The downtown walk focused on organizations available to help addicts unclench the grip that drugs and alcohol have on them and, for many, become a vital part of their community again. On Wednesday, Creighton students lay on the ground, 6 feet apart, across campus as part of the Die-In Demonstration, which served as a visual representation of the constant injustices Black Americans face in this country.
