NUSRAT DJAHAN MOSQUE, COPENHAGEN Muslims comprise about four percent of the Danish population, and numbers are on the rise. Built in 1967, The Nusrat Djahan, located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, is Denmark’s first mosque. This mosque is used by members of the Ahmadiyya faith, a branch of Islam, which perhaps accounts for why Denmark’s first real mosque was reported to have opened only earlier this year. #old #muslim #pray #architecture #islam #danish #europe #copenhagen - @mosquesaroundtheworld on Instagram

Wednesday Sept 23 Feast of Saint Padre Pio and Opening Mass at Epiphany Church and Eucharistic Procession to Planned Parenthood abortion facility. Join in prayer and fasting to stop abortion in our city and worldwide. Streamed 6am Wednesday Sept 23 https://www.facebook.com/40daysforlifepgh/ “The race that does not accept respect for man from the time of his conception, is destined to an ignominious end, because it distorts the concept of love of neighbor, mistakes it with egoism and cannot conceive the love of God at all. Those who practice abortion and who turn to subterfuge and sophisms in order to remain within the limits of the Catholic Church, are poor people who are deceiving themselves, and are very similar to the remains of Pompeii . . . I pity nobody more than these.” Padre Pio - @saintpaulcathedral on Instagram

26th SEPTEMBER 2020 – 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR The 19th century saw the rise of a socio-cultural, intellectual movement in Bengal known as the Bengal Renaissance. This social reform movement saw the rise of various intellectuals who used the medium of creative expression as a dominant mode of promoting and debating about social structure, religion, education. Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rabindranath Tagore were the major proponents, however, along with them were also Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, known for his humanistic approach and knowledge in Vedanta philosophy and Sanskrit. Born on 26th September 1820, Ishwar Chandra, in his childhood, was introduced to the various subjects like astronomy, grammar, philosophy and literature which by his graduation in 1841 earned him the title of ‘Vidyasagar’ meaning Ocean of knowledge. His most prominent contribution has been towards the cultural awakening of the Bengal Renaissance by being a supporter of girls’ education, widow remarriages and was against high caste polygamy. He organised various public protests, the famous being the ‘Signature Campaign’ which got him into strife with the religious groups, citing scriptures for their discriminatory treatment. Ishwar countered these allegations by publishing papers on widow marriages by stating that no scripture debars widow remarriages. His constants legal intervention into these discriminatory malpractices led the formulation of the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act 1856. This landmark judgment protected the widows and gave them the right to lead a respectful life. As a scholar and philanthropist, he was a staunch supporter of dissemination of education, even to women to rise above the societal oppressions. He established schools by initiating Nari Shakti Bhandar for its funding. Along with this, he is also credited for standardising and reforming the Bengali alphabets by writing the book Borno Porichoy (Varna Parichay) and has written several books encompassing elements of mythology, humour, satire and irony. A brief history of Womens Rights in Pakistan (Part 2): Shortly after Zia ul Haq established his dictatorship in Pakistan, he introduced the infamous Hudood Ordinances in 1979. The Hudood Ordinances comprised of laws that significantly reduced the rights of the women in the country. Before I expand on what all the Hudood Ordinances entailed, I think its first important to understand the indirect impact that Zias tenure had on the women of the time. Shireen Khan Burki, in Politics of Misogyny makes note of how the Federal State began to demand the covering of women with chadors- working women were told to adhere to these laws and women were also forced to ensure that they covered themselves before appearing on state-controlled television. Although the rural life was relatively unwavered by Zias laws, the urban womans life was drastically affected. Not only was there a staunch increase in restrictions, but harassment against women was also on the rise (Burki, 2016, p. 105). There were debates relating to whether the Muslim Family Law Ordinance of 1961 (discussed in the previous post) should be repealed, whether women should be allowed to drive cars, and also whether women should be barred from participating in spectator sports. Even though all of these issues contributed to the agitation of women, the Hudood Ordinances of 1979 proved to be the pivotal moment when the leading female activists and lawyers decided to mobilise in protest of Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. [The next post (part 3) will refer to the Hudood Ordinances and its effects]. *** I understand that my choice of words may seem to be harsher than necessary- but it is about time that we understand where the problem lies. Islam, without a doubt, has beautiful teachings which- in theory- would format a perfect society. However, that does not mean that imperfect humans can not exploit and distort it to further their own agendas. Religion is a tool that has been the easiest to play with for many politicians, and they have used it to their advantage for centuries.
