Morris, and is on view IRL as well as online through August 14. . Visitor guidelines below. . “In Utopia (1516) the English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman and Renaissance humanist, Sir Thomas More coined the term ‘Utopia’ in his sociopolitical satire. Combining the Greek words “not” (ou) and “place” (topos), 16th century readers would have translated the new word to ‘Not place’ or ‘Noplace’. More’s ‘Utopia’ was an imaginary arcadian paradise, off the coast of an inexact location in the ‘New World’. Describing this Utopia as the blueprint for a perfect society, More conceived of a place that offered the material benefits of a welfare state, promoted religious freedom, tolerated euthanasia as well as divorce, and abolished the societal constructs of private property, monarchy, and military. . Written against the backdrop of the tyrannical reign of King Henry VIII, Utopia sits in stark contrast to its societal context, which was without freedom of speech or thought, where one man accrued vast wealth, while thousands of others starved. By naming the island ‘Utopia,’ or ‘Noplace’, More emphasizes the island’s non-existence, allowing him to discuss real monarchical corruption while preserving his head (which Henry VIII put on a spike in 1535). By creating a fantastical positive ideal, More communicates the injustice of his lived reality while simultaneously making an appeal to humanity’s capacity for change.” . Visiting the gallery: - All staff and visitors will be required to wear masks. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided for visitors at the front desk - The gallery will admit a maximum of five visitors at a time and have a reduced number of staff on-site - The front desk will abide by a paperless policy. I once had a male friend of mine say “I like that you’re funny, most women aren’t funny”, as if it were a compliment. Thinking immediately of my mother and aunt and many of my close friends, I retorted: “Every funny person I know is a woman.” Women can be all at once alluring, brilliant, sad, hilarious, furious, ecstatic, tragic, and hopeful. Lately I have found myself grappling with the way I present on the internet, as it relates to my intellect, talent, sexuality and humor. As if showing some of my cards negates the others in my deck. Women, especially in creative fields, are constantly balancing the use of our image as a means to help us, with having it strongly act against us. Often begging to be taken seriously and struggling not to let ourselves fall into ingrained tropes (the madonna/whore dichotomy has never left the building)! Living in more of a two-dimensional reality than ever has taken it’s toll on most-and can cause us to put more stock in our online identities and the ways in which we think we will be perceived. Hot girls can be smart. Funny girls can be sad. Happy girls can be poetic. ~Cool~ girls can be emotional. Serious girls can be sexual. We are all of the above and ever changing, we’re full of stunning contradictions. This binaric view of femininity is so tired and archaic. A woman choosing to show her body or not show her body, or to present a certain way on the internet says absolutely nothing about her personal life/habits/skills/goals etc. Photo is one of my favorite feminist artists Carolee Schneemann in a performance/video piece of hers from 1983 entitled “Fresh Blood-A Dream Morphology.” (did I mention I have a degree in feminist art? and one in music? and I look cute on my Instagram? ;) - @shanasarett on Instagram

Last week, four museums in the US and the UK announced they would postpone a traveling Philip Guston exhibition to 2024 due to concerns about the reception of Ku Klux Klan imagery he employed in some works. As the art world debates the decision, were thinking about an essay our January-February 1978 essay, in which @robertasmithnyt addresses what was then the biggest controversy around Gustons work: his shift from abstraction to figuration in the late 1960s. Some may see this as a self-indulgent or regressive move, but in his own reclusive, schizophrenic, fragmented way, Guston is contemporary, Smith writes.
