What the waters left behind translation Los olvidados has proven that foreign horror films from south America is differently here to stay directed by the onetti brothers , the film is about a village was submerged under ten meters of salt water when epecuen disappeared. 30 years later , the waters receded and the runis of the town emerged exposing a bleak and deserted landscape. A small documenting film crew went to film a documentary when they all one by one end up getting pick up by what is stalking and killing them. Film is extraordinary and well written giving you that 80s and 90s slasher flick vibe . hi everyone ✨ just wanted to share a little exciting news. @inbetweensseries was officially selected as a part of @nfftyfilm 2020 line up & also got nominated for best documentary, which is uh..... my very first time ever for my project to be nominated for something??? 😭 for those who may not know, i started a little docu series project last year called in-between(s), as a way to explore the different stories within the asian diaspora here in the US. though my vision was to create a 10-episode series, we only ended up being able to make the pilot episode (which i’m still proud of!). i hope that this will open up more doors for this docu series, and that this can continue later in the future this will also be my last film i can ever submit to NFFTY! because i have reached the age limit lmfaooo. Hi all, @holdtheframe here. I’m excited to host the CS account for the next week. This community has been an invaluable resource for me and I hope my posts are useful to others. Here we go. First up, I’d like to talk about The Sound of Silence, a feature I shot, directed by @michaeltyburski . It premiered at Sundance 2019 and was released by IFC Films and is streaming these days. Peter Lucian (played by Peter Sarsgaard) is a successful house tuner in New York City, who calibrates the sound in peoples homes in order to adjust their moods. He meets a client, Ellen (played by Rashida Jones), with a problem he cant solve. I’ve hopped around many genres in my work but my approach to conceptualizing the look of each film always begins with character and story. How can I use my tools to portray the character’s emotional journey? In our initial meetings in prep, the director and I dig into the subtext and psychology of the characters and I let those ideas inform our visuals. I try to do this before we even start scouting so that these core ideas guide what we think we want in our locations. The film is about Peter’s obsession with the invisible forces that influence us. To draw out how that obsession has isolated him emotionally, and how it imposes a rigidity on his life, I shot early sequences in the film without much camera movement and wide-open on Zeiss Super Speeds for a super shallow depth of field. Of course, the visuals of this film had to support the sound elements and the act of listening, which is central to the film’s story. We found that by limiting the bandwidth of visual information further, with very low exposure levels and by designing a LUT that pulled everything into a very limited color palette (with the mighty @romanhankewycz ), we were able to enhance the audience’s act of listening. It was an exciting journey from how the idea started to the production process and the final product. All of our hard work has found its value in the multiple nominations in different festivals around the world. Wowee! This past weekend we took home the award for Best Student Shortwork at the @whisfilmfest! This is an insane and unexpected win for us! Our film New Washing Machine, was screened alongside some really excellent films in our block, each made by students from VFS, UBC, SFU, Capilano U and Emily Carr! Many of these schools have dedicated film programs with tons of camera and gear support as well as professional industry training! This is why it’s so insane that our film, a project made during my time at @ufvsoca, which does not (yet) have a film program, won the award! What @ufvsoca has going for it are some truly excellent professors that pushed me to bend the rules and make films and study filmmaking within a traditional fine arts program! @directormelanie was the first one to inspire me but there were so many others: @brenda.fredrick, Grace Tsuramaru, @shelley.stefan, Tersuomi Anzai, and Geoff Carr to name a few!
