I truly dislike social media challenges and have never participated in one :) But this one gives me an opportunity to share an image of Forough Farrokhzad (فروغ فرخزاد). One of the most influencial and controversial Iranian poets and film makers whom remains so very underrepresented as an international icon. As a teenager, Foroughs poetry gave me courage to want to know and admire my body as a woman; to not be ashamed of my sexual desires; to reject the idea and taboo of female virginity while living in Iran where such perspectives to women bodies were forced as dominant culture and valued in a patriarchal society. Forough gave me (and many other girls and women) hope as a young woman and continues to inspire my work and thinking beyond binary views of women bodies in which liberation is defined in a black and white box of (Islamic) veiling vs (westernized) nudity. One of her most known poem lines is: Remember the flight, the bird is mortal and I do my best to live by that daily. Many people have remarked that my paintings display a fondness for tangled foregrounds, screens of foliage, and particularly for pendulous branches. They say, it looks Japanese. Experience at the lake, however, might teach them that such are typical of the wild Canadian woods; that vegetation obscured the view nearly everywhere, and that the tangle of growth is so thick that often an axe is needed to cut a way through. If they have kept to the beaten path, then they probably respect convention in art as well as in life, writes Walter J. Phillips in an unpublished manuscript titled Wet Paint from the 1920s/30s.
