On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied. For example, 442nd trainees from Camp Shelby would often visit for baseball games with the teams in Rohwer. Todays image depicts a flooded block at Rowher Concentration Camp. On this day, 1 October 1931, hundreds of tenants of an estate in Neukolln, Berlin, launched a rent strike to pressure their landlord into evicting the SA: Nazi Brownshirts. However, most of the tenants were on welfare so could not actually withhold their rent and so eventually the strike crumbled unsuccessfully.
