More than 300,000 people in the streets witnessed the fall of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic on 5 October 2000. The opposition had claimed victory in the September elections, but a Federal Election Commission called for a second ballot, claiming neither side had an outright majority. A general strike and mass protests followed. On 4 October 2000, Yugoslavias constitutional court annulled the election; by dawn the next day, people converged on Belgrade. By 4 pm protesters had captured the parliament building, and at 6.30 pm opposition leader Vojislav Kostunica addressed a rally of some half a million people and declared himself president. The image by Noel Patrick Quidu Gamma for Newsweek received Honorable Mention in the ‘General news, stories’ category of the 2001 World Press Photo Contest and is part of the special exhibition ‘People, Power: Documenting protest since 1957.’ In collaboration with @UNESCO, @unesconow and @minbz, the exhibition presents images that have become global symbols of people power and celebrates the work of professional photographers who are showing us the stories that matter. It will be displayed in public spaces across Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague as part of the World Press Freedom Conference 2020, and is free for visitors. When you look at this picture you and I may see two different things. To many this is a familiar scene of jubilation and release which fuels what we know as Carnival in Trinidad. To me I see an extensive industry eco system that is now on pause Let me state firstly, the postponement of carnival was neither a suprise to me (for months I anticipated this) and it was not the wrong decision either as health comes first. What cannot be denied though is the ramifications of this are far reaching. This picture reminds me of the people who are part of a massive machine to bring to life the feelings of joy we feel. Some of these roles are unseen or taken for granted. Too often people focus on mas bands, artistes, djs and promoters but there is so much more. Every single category includes many staff members who work tirelessly to bring this carnival experience to life. They are empowered by their passion and behind the scenes work feverishly to bring visions to life. Caterers, bartenders, bar staff, security, cleaners, lighting and sound engineers, decor teams, pan men, rhythm sections, tent suppliers, screen suppliers, plumbers, electricians, firemen, police, transport company, license procurement, workmen/women, mas men, truck drivers, promotional teams, liquor and water companies, printing comapanies, graphic design, video design, clothes designers, artist managers, stylists, hotels, hotel staff, airport staff, pilots, video surveillance, merchandise printers, flight attendants, advertising agencies, mas designers, wire benders, mas camp workers, photgraphers, videographers, medics and the list goes on I agree it is a time to innovate, reflect, pivot and most importantly survive. However, let us not forget the people who are now indefinitely out of work. This isnt just about the people you see at the top of the hierarchy, but it trickles down to the man on the street that works to make an honest dollar during the festival. Carnival could never be cancelled. It is a part of us. It is our spirit. It is our culture. We shall celebrate again when the world is safe. See you in 2022 we pray. Its been a year since we marched the streets in the worlds biggest climate strike to date. September 20th, 2019 was one of those days you hope will make history. When enough people have shown up to create a tipping point. I must admit that marching next to kids of all ages and hearing them chant how they demand a livable future, was a bit unreal. How have we come to a point when kids have to speak up for their rights to LIVE? As heartbreaking as it might feel to recognize the absurdness in it all, we must let it empower us. As the brilliant young @sharonashnayder said in our IG live on Friday: “Children are capable, competent and resilient. We must empower them and we must listen to their cries for help.” 2020 has not turned out to be what anyone of us expected and it might feel like were being challenged with one roadblock after the other. But maybe this year is exactly what it has to be. Maybe weve started enough waves where the world is finally in motion, and the changes we need to see are manifesting themselves, right in front of our eyes? I encourage you not to lose hope. I encourage you not to give up. Please see all the chaos and darkness this year as an opportunity to break down everything that wasnt working and start anew. A Green New Deal is on the rise, both in the US and Europe, and I have a feeling that we - THE PEOPLE - are waking up to the belief that a different kind of world is possible. Please hold on to that thought and fuel it all you can! We cant manifest what we dont dare to dream about first... 🌏 Five tips for fueling hope: - Do whatever you can to act, big and small. Action fuels optimism. - Seek community and find power in numbers. Remember the 3.5% rule! - VOTE. - Ask questions, share, and speak your truth. Never has it been more important to start conversations. - Let yourself FEEL! Suppressing feelings of fear and anxiety wont make them go away. Embrace your vulnerability and fuel it into strength. On September 30th, 1989, ICEHOUSE released the single “Touch The Fire”. The song was one of two new songs to appear on the greatest hits album, Great Southern Land. The other new song was “Jimmy Dean”. The single climbed up to Number 13 on the Australian Singles chart. The video for “Touch The Fire” brought ICEHOUSE one of its very few moments of controversy when the clip was banned by MTV in the United States due to its religious imagery. The recording of “Touch The Fire” reunited the team that worked on ICEHOUSE’s Man of Colours album. David Lord flew to Australia to produce it, David Hemming was the engineer and the song was recorded in the same studio, Studios 301.
