I never post anything personal here- but this is the exception to the exceptions. This Heavy Metal Gods first album was the gateway drug to the rest of my life!!! I was in the 4th grade when I first heard I Dont Know coming from a 5th grader’s boom box. The next day I begged my mother to buy me Blizzard of Oz. We hit the local record store, the clerk opens the glass case for the cassette, and my mother looks at the cover and says, Is this really what you want?!?!?! to which of course I respond “YES, YES, YES!” while frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog! I listened to this cassette til it stretched out and I had to buy a new one. Thus began my head first dive into the rabbit hole of hard rock and heavy metal, and subsequently my desire to have a career in the music industry. What a gift one album can give! Ive had many dreams come true but now its finally come full circle with having the opportunity to work on Ozzys new music. I have watched in horror as the events of the past weeks have unfolded. There have been acts of unimaginable cruelty, extreme prejudice and unforgivable bigotry. I have felt a full spectrum of emotions from anger, sadness, outrage, shame, disbelief... Sadly none of this is new. In my life I’ve seen some of the people I’ve cared for most subjected to a barrage of injustice and racism. While I have stood with them at every turn I have no right to say “I understand”. Regardless of my proximity, I can’t possibly understand their struggle. I am a white man and as such I have lived with all of that privilege. I have very rarely been judged by the colour of my skin. Daily assumptions have not been made about my intentions or faculties because I am white. I do not have the experience of anyone shouting racial slurs at me as they drive past and I have never feared authorities would do anything more to me than give me a fine for driving too fast. I have done my very best to teach my children that people are just that; people. To judge a person by their deeds and by the way they treat others. I have spoken strongly in the face of racism and inequality but I cannot possibly understand. What I can do is continue to voice my support. To continue to teach my children to create a world founded on my belief of equality and to speak up and stand against any act that would diminish or oppress another. I hope for an awakening, a unity... A true and lasting change. I fear it is a long road. As a global population we MUST do better. For those of you who have been subjected to all of the injustice that I have not, i am sorry. When I got into competitive skateboarding It was because I didn’t want to sit in the stands and watch my friends. I didn’t care if I got last. I wanted to skate! Things flurrished and one day at Volcom Park lil black kid asks me how to get sponsored. I told him to just practice and work hard. After that I realized my influence and that it was important to be a role model for younger black kids. On September 14th, a young woman in Hathras, U.P., belonging to the Dalit Valmiki caste was allegedly raped by four men belonging to an upper Thakur caste. The victim succumbed to her injuries, and on September 29th, the U.P. police cremated her body without her family’s consent after barricading the family inside their home. Amid the outpouring of outrage on social media, the victim’s gender takes the spotlight. However, the victim’s Dalit identity is either invisible in people’s expressions of anger and frustration, or deemed by some to be a distraction from the ‘real’ issue of a woman’s rape. Yet, the victim’s Dalit caste identity is extremely important, considering rape and sexual assault are the most common forms of violence utilized against marginalized castes, according to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, and because there has been a 25% increase in crimes against Dalits over the past decade. The victim’s caste identity matters because it shines a spotlight upon India’s uncomfortable position as a casteist state and society that repeatedly terrorizes individuals deemed lower caste with violence, rape, and murder, while its justice system often looks the other way. Ignoring the Hathras victim’s Dalit identity is both erasing one of the most plausible potential motives for the crime and turning a blind eye to the impenetrable hold caste-centric patriarchy exerts over Indian society. The Dutch government just announced that all big events and gatherings will be banned until the 1st of September due to the COVID crisis. It’s with a very heavy hart that we have to announce Free Your Mind Festival will not be happening on the scheduled date.
