Happy National Wildlife Day! Featured above is Eurycea rathbuni or the Texas Blind Salamander. While you won’t find them at Palmetto, they are a central Texas specialty and only occur in the watery caves of the Edwards Aquifer in Hays County. This salamander uses its external gills to extract oxygen from the water and eats small crustaceans and snails, as well as other small invertebrates that might flow into its cave. It is adapted to the darkness, and its eyes have been reduced to two black dots. The Texas Blind Salamander is endangered and very vulnerable to pollution. It needs a constant flow of clean, cool water in order to survive. A conservation plan has been in place since 2013 to protect and restore the salamanders habitat. #nationalwildlifeday #txstateparks - @palmettostatepark on Instagram

Gonodoris castanea- small is beautiful This liltle doris was found over the weekend on our first survey back since lockdown. It was only a mere 1cm long!!! From what could only be described as a brown blob under a rock, it got transformed into this speckled and frilly beauty😍 Proving again how underwater cameras can transform the rockpooling experience. 📸 @sea_loop #ukmarinelife #shoresearch #shoresesrchcornwall #uknature #mollusc #sealife #marinelife #uknatureimages #ukwildlife #ukwildlifeimages #nature #wildlifephotography #macro #seaslug #nudibranchs #rockpools #springwatch #uwmacro #nature_lovers #macronaturephotography #underwatermacrophotography #uwphotography #underwaternature #naturephotography - @shoresearchcornwall on Instagram

#fjords #fiordosdeChile #fiordosdeaysen #ecosistemasmarinos #ciep #aysenpatagonia #aysen #Cienciachile @ciencianenchile #esponjas #sponge #fotosmarinas #SenoMagdalena #patagonia #costasdechile @withregram @centrociep - @cetaceoscisnes on Instagram

Axolotl. Axolotl?? AXOLOTL!! These neotenic salamanders are classified as Critically Endangered in the wild. They were discovered in the canals outside of Mexico City, and pollution is driving them to extinction, BUT somewhere in the mountains of Montana, there are lakes that never dry up and that have no fish in them, so these salamanders never have to grow up. From Wikipedia Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. They are also perhaps the most-studied amphibian because they have incredible regenerative abilities. They can re-grow arms, legs, tails, eyes, and organs, including parts of their brains! The same lake youve seen in a few recent shots from is where I found these guys. I paddled out with my surfboard, goggles, and GoPro, and I saw dozens of these amazing creatures. If you want to learn more about these little wonders I highly recommend you look up the article in Scientific American called Biologys Beloved Amphibian--the Axolotl--Is Racing toward Extinction. I feel so lucky to have had a chance to swim with them. Thanks again to @wessiler for pointing me toward them. #axolotl #salamander #endangeredspecies #nature #montana #endangered #criticallyendangered #wildlife #wildlifephotography #amphibians #amphibiansofinstagram #axolotlsofinstagram #axolotllove #axolotls - @brentdangerrose on Instagram

#FactFriday: The coral in the photograph looks more like a soft coral than a hard coral. Corals in the genus Plerogyra, termed bubble or grape corals, expand their water-filled bubbles or vesicles during the day in order to maximize the exposure of their symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) to sunlight. At night, the vesicles retract so that their tentacles can expand to feed on small organisms. ⠀ ⠀ Learn more #FunFacts about marine life on our coral reef education portal at LOF.org (link in bio). - @livingoceansfoundation on Instagram

Texas Gold Millipede - - Scientific Name: Orthoporus ornatus . Taxonomy: Animalia -- Arthropoda -- Myriapoda -- Diplopoda -- Spirostreptida -- Spirostreptidae -- Orthoporus -- ornatus . Status: least concerned . Features: This species has a gold colored body (hence the name) with dark brown segment lines. Typically has a dark brown head. Has been recorded up to 6 (15.24 cm) but on average is about 4 (10.16 cm) . Distribution: Can be found in the wild in U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas as well as the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. . In captivity: This species prefers more arid conditions than that of previous Florida species. In the wild, they prefer more sunshine than many species. Note, desert does not equal 100% sand. Still keep them in a substrate of mostly organic soil. Also to note, dont be worried if your millipedes disappear for the winter months; its completely normal and they should reappear in the spring! . . Footnotes: N/A . 🐛Personal Notes🐛 Sorry for skipping around with species! The reason Im covering the Golds now is because I just got several of my own! They are absolutely wonderful and my biggest species to date. They do spray their toxins much more often than my other species, but of course it isnt dangerous. In my tank, I experimented mixing my usual substrate with childrens play sand (so its non-toxic) to try and aerate the soil better. So far all is going well and they seem to enjoy digging into the sand. Also, as the holidays are here Ill probably be posting less for the next couple of weeks. At the most I might post every other week instead of every week, but it shouldnt be any longer than that. Thanks for reading! . . Have any species you want me to cover or have questions on? DM me! . . ~~Tags~~ #oornatus #orthoporusornatus #texasgoldmillipede #desertmillipede #millipede #millipedes #myriapod #diplopoda #fieldguide #millipedemanual . -Photo References: myself -Information References: wikipedia - @the.millipede.manual on Instagram

A gnarly looking Vintage Spenwood. At 24 months old the flavour is full on, ranging from Parmigiano Reggiano to a mature Manchego and bursting with crystals. 😍 Our goal with doubling the Spenwood store in size was to make room for putting extra mature batches away, with the hope we could eventually distribute a Vintage Spenwood for wholesale. 🤞🏻🧀 . . . #cheese #britishcheese #sheepscheese #ewesmilkcheese #spenwood #cheesemaker - @villagemaidcheese on Instagram
