The Australian illustrator, Maxwell Tilse (@maxwellillustration), makes adventurous explorations with his backpack through Europe. His claim to fame is his freehand sketches that are completely hand drawn and not digitally manipulated. The 25-year-old artist is very passionate about art and travel as he points out “Travel and art are my greatest pleasures and over the past year I’ve been able to fund my travel through art.” He creates small 5 by 5-inch drawings of each city he visits. This way, he documents his various journeys and maintains them in his diary of sketches. Tilse’s miniature cards showcase his detailed works that capture the diverse architecture found in various cities. We did a thing! We bought a house. After 3+ years of looking it was the smoothest all in one day deal that could have ever happened. It’s a beautiful house & location that we could have never dreamed of affording in Vancouver (aka one of the hottest real estate markets in the world). But...the crazy part—we are moving across the water to Vancouver Island. I was born and raised in Victoria and our children will be raised there too. It’s a huge life shift for us. But one we are excited for!! Of course, we have some are broken hearts as we have laid down roots in Vancouver and will have to say goodbye to quick afternoon hangouts with some of my best friends. 😭 But I am looking forward to weekend hang outs— wine and cheese dinners, long languid thrift store trips and hot drinks by the fireplace (a real one *squeal*) Smaller city, quieter streets, slower pace of life. Cheers to 11 years! It’s with a lot of thoughtfulness, love and gratitude that I announce that mac & murphy is retiring from retail. These years have been the most life changing and it all happened within the four walls of this special place. Ive made lifelong friends, created the most beautiful invitations, worked with designers and artists that inspired me, had THE most fun, learned more than I ever imagined, been in every dream magazine, met the love of my life and some of the most interesting people walking through our front doors. When we opened up our adorable paper shop in 2009, we never thought it could become what it is today; a place that was built by two women who set out to bring back the art of writing and turned it into an internationally recognized brand. Mac & Murphy has loved being a part of this community and especially Cannon St. Truly the OGs of this neighborhood. We knew when our friends and clients walked into the shop they would walk away with a little bit more joy in their life - we always took so much pride in that. After the most rewarding and successful years for the shop, I made the decision in January of this year to focus on my life balance both personally and professionally. It was a decision rooted in grace, gratefulness and so much damn love. This is a celebration of what mac & murphy has meant to us and all of you as we wind down 11 years of our success. So as 2019 comes to an end, it is with so much pride that I thank this entire community both local and around the globe for your support of a dream that built a brand. My heart is bigger and more full because of every single one of you. I’m honored to have forever made a mark on the Charleston landscape. Happy Vitiligo Awareness month my friends. I hope you’ve seen something this month that has inspired you to step out and show off your spots, love yourself more deeply and use your voice to create awareness for not only vitiligo but all the causes you care about. You have the ability to make waves and create change. To me the vitiligo awareness movement is not just about vitiligo. It’s about loving and accepting everyone as they are. No matter the color of their skin or what’s on their skin. This is a campaign for love and kindness. ❤️I hope to live in a world that’s just and fair for everyone. Where the systems put in place help and not hurt communities. I’d be blind If I pretended like we were all treated as if we had equal footing. We don’t. It’s our job to lift the voices of the communities that haven’t been treated fairly and turn inward and ask how we can use our talents and gifts to help. I will never fully understand what a POC experiences. I will never fully understand what someone in the LBTQ+ community experiences. I will love them and I’ll try my very best to be a good ally. I will make mistakes. I have made mistakes. I’d like to be called out for them and do better bc they deserve better. Please know I’m not trying to preach to anyone. Life hasn’t been the same in Bangor since the mills and the quarries shut down. As the jobs disappeared, so too did the workers and the foot traffic in downtown shops. About a quarter of the downtown storefronts are now vacant, with businesses cycling through every four to five years. But in recent months, artists have flocked to the vacant storefronts and massive brick exteriors, breathing life and color into the former center of commerce through a mural project called Beautify Bangor. I just celebrated my birthday and I’d like to say I’ve never felt better, or that 41 is the new 31. But if I’m being honest, I’m exhausted. It’s been one hell of a trip around the sun, that’s for sure. This time last year I was eight months pregnant and full of lots of beautiful ideas of how the coming year would unfold. Little did I know a curveball was heading my way. In addition to the global health crisis and civil rights movement that is enveloping all of us, in the past 365 days I’ve also become a mother with the birth of baby Esmé, mourned the loss of my soul dog, had an unexpected week long hospital stay, watched two wildfires burning way too close to home, and seen my wedding signage business evaporate with the ban on social gatherings. It’s hard to pinpoint which of the above has given me my first grey hairs but they’re currently multiplying by the day. Now I’ve had my fair share of pity parties; I can’t help but be upset knowing that Esmé can’t visit her grandparents or go to story time at the library or be part of a play group. Anxiety creeps in any time I start thinking about what I’ll do for work now that my unemployment has run out. But I’ve had twice as many moments where I’ve been engulfed in gratitude. Above all I’m thankful for the health and safety of my family, but I’m also grateful that the hardships of the past year have given me the opportunity to prove my strength and resilience. Every time I think I’m at the end of my rope, I manage to pull it together and keep on keeping on. So my greatest wish for the coming year is for a continuation of strength and growth, personally and professionally.
