Sometimes, life can get a little overwhelming. And when it does, the first thing I like to do is take a deep breath. 💙 When I first started frenshe I shared with you all that meditation is a part of my daily life, and so many of you felt the same or wanted to start practicing meditation, too! I’ve gotten so many questions about how to start meditating, and what my own practice looks like, and those posts are coming, I PROMISE! For now, I wanted to leave you with some of my top tips to start meditating: 🌙 Start slow — even just 5 minutes at a time! 🌙 Find a place that’s super peaceful where you won’t get distracted. 🌙 Sit or lay in a comfortable position that you can hold without moving around too much. 🌙 I love guided meditation on apps like insight timer, headspace and calm. You can find one for exactly what you’re feeling that day! 🌙 Find a set time each day for meditation. I like to meditate in-between making coffee so my cup is ready when I’m done. 🌙 The more you practice, the more present you will become! This is #SustainabilityAgainstShame. Welcome to this new movement, that is as much yours as its mine. It aims to stop shaming for profit. Because that persistent way of selling us products doesnt only make us feel bad about ourselves, it also makes it nearly impossible to behave sustainably. We need to keep buying (and buying and buying to belong. We keep hearing we are not good enough - day in, day out since we are born. Our size, our skin, our eating habits, our sexual orientation, our age, they are not okay. Most of the messaging we receive is specifically intended to make us not like ourselves. That is terrible enough in itself (whole generations develop a negative self-image because of this), but it also means that we cant stop treating the earth terribly. We are shamed into shopping, and need to actively recognise the way this system works. To not only save ourselves, but the world too. Enough is enough! That is why I am launching this movement. #SustainabilityAgainstShame is there to help us feel good and be good to the people and planet too. And we do it together. There is lots you can do to make this happen. You can find all ways in the images of this post. Please share them as much as you can! Lets put the link between shaming and sustainability on the map! Submitted by attorneys on behalf of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (#NORML), the 36-page filing focuses on two-plus decades worth of state-based efforts to legalize #marijuana in varying degrees. Specifically, the brief juxtaposes those successful reforms against the increasingly lax and permissive attitude of all three branches of the federal government viz. marijuana. “A supremacy and nullification crisis has loomed for the past 24 years with regard to the 34 States that implemented some form of cannabis legalization program despite its prohibited Schedule I designation under the federal Controlled Substances Act (#CSA),” the filing notes. “This crisis has been fomented by all branches of government. Each have made statements and taken actions to protect and further the #state #cannabis programs despite #federal #illegality. States have passed cannabis regulations that defy federal supremacy.” Filed as a supplementary brief in the case of Washington v. Barr, NORML also notes that, since 2014 Congress has consistently passed appropriations riders that “handcuff” the Executive branch and federal law enforcement–prohibiting them from using federal funds to investigate and prosecute marijuana users or distributors who are in compliance with state law and regulations. Happy birthday Assata Shakur In 1973, Assata, Sundiata Acoli, and Zayd Malik Shakur were ambushed by cops on the New Jersey turnpike in East brunswick. Assata was shot three times and then arrested, and in 1977 she was wrongfully convicted for the death of Werner Foerster, a state trooper who died in the ambush. Her name was Tracy “Mia” Green🕊 (9/29/20) PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Law enforcement sources say the man charged with the murder of a transgender woman in West Philadelphia Monday has now confessed to the killing. Police say Abdullah Ibn El-Amin Jaamia was pulled over at 41st Street and Westminster Avenue after he blew a stop sign because he was rushing a woman, Tracy “Mia” Green, to the hospital after she was shot three times around 8 a.m. With lights and sirens on, officers helped escort the Jeep Wrangler to Penn Presbyterian, where 29-year-old Green, a transgender woman, was later pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources say El-Amin Jaamia told detectives he was trying to rescue Green as she was yelling for help nearby and that he told them Green started to take off her clothes in the car, before she was shot in the neck, as they were driving. Officials have charged El-Amin Jaamia with Green’s murder, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and related offenses. Green is the second known transgender woman to be killed in Philadelphia this year. Dominique Rem’mie Fells was found dead and dismembered in the river near Bartrams Garden this summer. “This latest act of violence against a member of our community is a somber reminder of the epidemic of violence against trans individuals. It is a crisis that cannot be allowed to persist any further. The countless painful losses experienced during this year alone—especially within our transgender communities of color— remind us that there is much work to be done in the pursuit of full equality, respect, and justice for us all, the citys Office of LGBT Affairs said in a statement. Hi #poetrycommunity, how are you all? I’ve been posting less because I’ve been focusing on my mental health and the current events that are taking around the world have been exhausting me. After the hearing of #breonnataylor case, we are once again reminded that this world doesn’t give a fuck about women, especially when you’re a woman that’s black, indigenous, or of color. I feel defeated. Once again I’m reminded that the world we live in is unfair, unjust, and pure evil. I wrote this piece to honor my mother - The woman behind the growth and progress of this poet. The strength and power I have today is a result of this brave woman. A woman who wasn’t afraid to fight the entire world for the sake of her three boys (I’m the middle child). This piece uses two prompts shared by the uber talented Saakshi @anonymousxonly Prompt 1 - My mother sleeps with a dagger under her pillow. Prompt 2 - Haunted silence To the men reading this - Take a minute and remind the women in your life that you love them, that you care for them, that you cherish them, and that you stand with them no matter what! And once you’re done reminding them of their greatness, get angry. Be very very angry. From Pakistan to U.S, women keep facing violence in one form of the other and in all honesty it is our fault. It is our fault that with our silence we’ve taught the perpetrators that they can get away with all the shit they make our women go through. Use your voice, your strength, your power, and your courage to amplify the voices and struggles of the women around you. Listen to them when they say they’re being oppressed. Let’s teach ourselves, our sons, and our fellow men that before being a wife, a daughter, a mother, or a partner, a woman is a human! Today, aaj kal is releasing its first compilation (€4!!) Were a community music project who donate 100% of our profits to aiding vulnerable communities across India. During these times when the present feels increasingly chaotic, weve banded together for our first release in support of those most affected by Covid-19 in India. The funds raised will be going directly to Muskaan, a grassroots NGO located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh in central India. Muskaan works with urban Adivasi and Denotified Tribes on education, research and human rights. Since the lockdown has been imposed, Muskaan has been working tirelessly on the ground to provide food supplies and sanitation essentials to 4500 families in the city in the midst of the current crisis. This compilation is not to take away from the fight for justice for Black lives in the US. We recognise that the work of these artists is rooted in Black culture. The communities we are helping have suffered, and continue to suffer from systemic casteism and anti-Blackness in their everyday lives. NEW INC is very special to me. When I moved to New York, just over 2 years ago, I hated it. It can be a harsh place to live. I generally found America far more callous than I had prepared for. My master’s program was not the place I thought it would be. I spent the 1st semester in deep regret for uprooting my whole life, risking financial stability & leaving a supportive community in Toronto. . That Fall I tried to leave New York so many times - I actually packed up all my stuff twice. I tried to shut down my scholarship at school, telling them that I wouldn’t be returning the following week. Coming back to Canada was more complicated than expected so, as I waited for all my visa & tuition related decisions to be undone, I decided to compensate for my disappointment by looking for people in the city who cared about the things that I cared about, namely BIPOC futures, diverse tech education, social justice in creative technology & generally all things outside of the flashy tech you wave your arms at. . I reconnected with some folks I’d met at @afrotectopia the previous Spring, who linked me with other likeminded creatives. Slowly but surely I was woven into a world of people, all pushing back against capitalist tech & leaning into innovative, speculative, dynamic ways of cultivating community. In this exploration, I found myself at @newinc a lot. Many of the minds I admired were residents there. I kept finding a reason to stay another week. . Looking back it seems clear that if it weren’t for the persistent wisdom, generosity & kindness of NEW INCers like @stefanibardin @dinkins.studio &, especially @rasupreme, I would have left New York & regret it forever. They really changed my life. Now, 2 years later, as a resident of New INC yr 7, I feel very whole & grateful for the ways in which I’ve felt seen in this city. Over the years I have been so grateful to my body for helping me achieve many things, however by far the best accomplishments ever are my children. As a runner, I know my body well and sensed that something special was happening before any test could tell. Nothing can top the love a Mother feels, and that begins even before we can hold or see the baby. Motherhood changes and enhances everything. Long before I dreamed of athletic goals, I dreamt of being a Mother. It is by far my most important role and will always be. Nothing comes before them and I will always fight hard for their wellbeing and to ensure they grow up loved and supported into the best human beings they can possibly be. Raph thinks that mum’s have (M)agical powers; we can find things when they lose them, fix things, comfort and sense when they are not feeling right or most (M)agical of all, we know when they have been up to Mischief! In truth, it is the honour of being a Mum that is truly (M)agical and gives us the strength to do more and be better - for them. The power and strength of the love and pride you feel as a Mother is (M)agical. Isla pretends to be too grown up for Magic, but in truth needs a (M)agical Mum more than ever and my life goal is to always be the best Mum I can possibly be for both of them. I am so happy that Nike are recognizing Mums in this way and doing everything to support athletes’ Motherhood journeys. I think being able to run each day helps me to be a nicer person and a better mum. Certainly being able to run through my pregnancy helped me stay mentally and physically healthy throughout and helped us all cope with the birth better.
