Odyssey Impact and Transform FIlms were honored to have him touch our lives and our work, first in a short film, We Shall Not Be Moved, where he spoke of the central role of the black churches in the Civil RIghts Movement to Save the Soul of the Nation, and more recently when he led a Democratic Party sit-in protest in Congress in the wake of the shootings in Orlando that left 49 people dead. On September 15th, 1963, a bomb planted by white supremacists ripped through Sixteenth Street Baptist Church killing four little girls – Addie Mae Collins (14), Cynthia Diane Wesley (14), Carole Robertson (14) & Carol Denise McNair (11) – and injuring several others. The tragedy marked the third bombing in eleven days in Birmingham, Alabama. In the 1960’s, Birmingham was one of the most racially segregated cities in the country. State and local politics were dominated by the Ku Klux Klan, the city police commissioner, Eugene “Bull” Connor, who promoted violence against black communities and the Governor George Wallace, who was a staunch segregationist. These factors combined to heighten anti-black sentiment and create a particularly dangerous environment for African Americans. Racially motivated attacks on black homes and churches grew so common that the city was referred to as “Bombingham.” The terrorist act against the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was a brutal reminder that the successes of the civil rights movement and the changes it represented would not go unchallenged. In the face of such violence, the determination to continue organizing intensified. Ritchie’s family wanted to remember “Mama” and share her birthday with Ritchie’s family and friends. Happy Birthday Mama. Concepcion Connie Valenzuela was born on October 6, 1915, and passed on October 18, 1987. In the mid 1950’s the Valenzuela Family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima where the then-teenager attended high school and began to play in a rock band. As his career began to take off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens and eventually recorded the hits we all know and love. The matriarch of the family had lived in Watsonville during her later years, but spent time in the home that Valens bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings. *Alerta de Gatilho* Eu já contei aqui que tive um filho na adolescência e que ele morreu com 4 meses e 16 dias de vida. Jonathan, fruto de um namoro adolescente, era um menino lindo, sorridente, que nasceu grande e forte e que não parecia ter nenhum problema grave de saúde até aquela manhã de 22/09/1995. Eu tinha acabado de completar 17 anos na época e já tinha enfrentado muitas dores àquela altura. O que nunca falei aqui é o quanto desejei morrer depois da perda dele. Quantas noites passei deitada no chão desejando o poder de cavar e me enterrar para que aquela dor cessasse. Quanta vezes eu desacreditei que existisse alguma possibilidade de ser feliz novamente. Eu tive apoio da minha família, de amigos, eu trilhei vários caminhos, religiosos inclusive, e eu busquei ajuda profissional, o que foi fundamental para que eu permanecesse viva e pudesse estar hoje contando essa história pra vocês. Lembro que certa vez eu falei pra minha primeira terapeuta que eu não tinha cometido suicidio por falta de coragem e ela me respondeu - CONTINUAR VIVA ESTÁ SENDO SEU MAIOR ATO DE CORAGEM! Nunca me esqueci, fez sentido para mim. Eu só quero dizer que se você tem uma dor muito profunda e que por causa dela já pensou em morrer, você pode buscar apoio para continuar. Quero te contar que já senti isso também e sei o quanto é difícil. Meu choro agora é pela dor que senti, mas sobretudo pela emoção de ter chegado viva até aqui, pra acolher essa menina, reescrever sua história e gritar para o mundo que ela sobreviveu. Eu sinto muita falta do Jonathan e não há um dia sequer em que não penso nele. Ele é parte fundamental da minha história porque é a partir da lembrança da sua perda que eu posso dizer, com toda certeza, que nada, nada mais, pode me matar - se eu sobrevivi a sua partida, filho, nada há de ceifar minha existência. Another week...another Womxn Wednesday!!! This Womxn Wednesday is all about Dr. Alexa Canady! Dr. Canady was the first African-American womxn to become a neurosurgeon in the United States. . . . Her journey began in the fall of 1967 where she started her B.S. in zoology at the University of Michigan. It wasnt until going into her senior year of college that she decided to take the road to medicine! After her graduation from the University of Michigans medical school in 1975, she went on to complete her residency at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. In her over 20 years of being a neurosurgeon, she worked tirelessly to treat patients suffering from brain tumors, hydrocephaly, gunshot wounds and other traumas. She also served as the Chief of Neurosurgery at Childrens Hospital of Michigan. More importantly, a certain group of people really had her heart: children. Dr. Canady was dedicated to providing accessible healthcare to the city of Detroit where children were often at the hands of poverty and racial inequity. Her work did not go unnoticed as she became the first black womxn to be certified as a diplomat on the American Board of Neurologual Surgery in 1984. Her home state also recognized her when they inducted her into the Michigan Womans Hall of Fame! . . . 365 days without you. 12:54am february 1st i got the worst phone call of my life and the 3 words that replayed in my head for months “arie she’s gone” there will never be a day when i won’t think of you and wish you were here by my side. no words will ever describe how much pain i felt when i heard that i felt like my heart had shattered into a million pieces, i didn’t know what i would do without you, i spent the next week and half crying wishing that this was all a dream then february 15th it all hit me... the imagine i can’t get out of my head till this day, your body just laying there. i remembered seeing your nails painted so perfectly in pink and i remembered all times you’d ask me did i like your nails. it will always be the little things i cherish and keep in my heart💜 seeing you for the last time, laying there so peacefully i was thankful that you didn’t have to suffer anymore & you weren’t in pain but all i could think of was why you? this can’t be real, she doesn’t deserve this. you were the reason i smiled everyday, you’ve made me into the young women i am today and i can not thank you enough.i know physically you are not here anymore but i know you are in heaven having a ball looking down on all the lives you’ve impacted and being so thankful that you were apart them. anyone thats ever came face to face with you knows that’s you can brighten their day in a heart beat. you were the true definition of a real grandmother❤️ i love you forever and i will always miss you. rest in peace grams💜🕊🤍 - @xoxo_arie on Instagram
