It’s #nationalbunnyday so I had to post our bun. Queens was my first experience caring for a bunny. I started fostering her and her best bun friend, Horatio, almost 2 years ago. At first I thought... what did I get myself into. I didn’t know anything about caring for bunnies. Both buns, especially Queens, were scared and not comfortable with people, having been in a cage most of their life before me. But I ended up learning so much from them. They are smart, affectionate and so soulful. Queens is also playful and feisty which I love. Sweet Horatio passed away due to complications from previous infections last year and we really miss him. But we are so happy to have Queens in our lives. * Consider opening up your home to a bun. There are hundreds in Los Angeles needing homes. Here is small excerpt: The spasms feel like an electrical wire is plugged into my testicles and penis and legs, and is turned up to the degree where they jolt and burn and sear my body from the inside out. Many people who live with disabilities suffer from this kind of invisible torment, like me. I had a burst fracture in my L-1 vertebrae, and I had a spinal cord injury. It affects all parts of my life: sexual function, physical activity, my ability to concentrate, carrying conversations, sitting, standing, my sense of self. The pain is so intense that its a struggle to focus on anything, at times. But looking at me, youd never see that. Youd never know the fucked up shit I was dealing with internally. With my photography, I wanted to tell stories about what life is like with a disability. I always pointed my camera at others instead of myself. Before the isolation period, I often felt that self-portraits were always, to some degree, narcissistic; there was always a vanity I attached to it. I wasnt into it. I had a grant to continue a long-term project, but when the lockdown occurred I could no longer pursue the story safely. I sat around the house, kind of brewing, like, What the fuck am I going to do now? What will I take pictures of? I saw many people taking photos of their families or of still lives or of pieces of light falling on the walls of their apartments, and it all seemed boring to me. I was resistant to start photographing these things: it all seemed insignificant, for some reason. I was wrong. I was dead set on the idea of continuing to tell stories about disability somehow, and like most great ideas, it was simple; the answer was right in front of me. Today is a really significant milestone for me. I am officially out of remission of my second melanoma! My cancer journey started 15 years ago and will continue the rest of my life. This darling girl is Cassie, short for Cassiterite. She’s a large-footed myotis, commonly known as a fishing bat. Myotis use echlocation to find freshwater invertebrates and small fish just below the surface of water and scoop them up in their feet, which are very large by microbat standards. The lovely people who found her and called us, live near a waterway. We think Cassie may have clipped one of her wings on something while flying. She had moved when our rescuer arrived but, not giving up, she searched and found Cassie hanging on a backyard brick wall, dehydrated and cranky. Cassie will be in care til the bruising on her wing heals. Luckily she loves her diet of brine shrimp, including slurping up the juice. Yum. If you see a bat on its own in the daytime, it needs help.
