I want to talk about harm avoidance. While tapping through stories this morning, I came across a post about self-diagnosis. Formal diagnosis is a luxury for a lot of people. When I was in high school, I knew something was not right and pleaded with my parents to get me professional help, but they wouldn’t do it. I didn’t get a to see a counselor until I was in grad school some 7 years later. I was diagnosed with C-PTSD right away. It was a textbook presentation of symptoms. A psych 100 student could’ve easily picked it out. There are people who intentionally fake a disability for various reasons (e.g., to bring a pet on an airplane without having to pay a pet fee), but it’s important to realize that if someone is self-diagnosed, it’s not okay to question them. Not everyone can get to a health care professional. We never know what a person is going through or how they’re experiencing life. Remember that disability and illness don’t have a look. Hidden illness exists. People who don’t have formal diagnoses deserve to have their privacy and boundaries respected just as much as everyone else. They don’t owe anyone an explanation. Their private medical history is PRIVATE; it’s no one’s business but their own. End of story. One of the themes of vegan ethics is harm avoidance; we strive to do the least harm and most good for all. We aim to be compassionate so we can see suffering in sentient beings and take steps to alleviate their pain. In the context of self-diagnosis, particularly with mental illness, consider whether questioning and subsequently invalidating a self-diagnosed person is doing the least harm and most good. There’s a difference between being self-diagnosed and outright willfully lying for personal gain. There’s more than enough unkindness in the world. Don’t add to it. Be respectful. Be kind.
