a recent powerful mental reframe that quite literally blew my mind 👇🏽 When I was feeling my body’s sensations of anxiety, panic and uncertainty of future events, AKA: FUTURE TRIPPING: I had a clarity moment where I realized that I AM AN ADULT, and I can do whatever I want, I am in control of my life. If I need to take a break from an event, or go for a walk and get away from a situation, if I need to take a mental breather and leave to reset my energy, I HAVE THE FREEDOM TO DO SO. Being an adult requires understanding what I need, what I want, and what my preferences are. And I know that my personal preferences aren’t going to be met everyday, and THATS OKAY. But what I do have control of, is my reactions, my rituals, and what I do to move through moments of stress or discomfort. 🤟🏽🦋The options are endless. My tool box is enormous at this point, so it’s about stepping back. Zooming out, and in that moment of anger, anxiety or panic, or resentment or discomfort, how can I cultivate calm and AT EASE energy, regardless of how much shit is hitting the fan, regardless of if someone is disrespecting me. How can I alchemize the discomfort and suffering into something that works and feels better for me. CW: suicide/abuse • I embroidered this in a feeble attempt to throw a life preserver to myself at a particularly miserable time in my life. The trauma I endured as a result of an insidiously abusive relationship and the lack of support I felt from my community left me feeling desperate and alone. The abandonment I felt across the board took a serious toll on me. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or even hardly speak to anybody at all. I did try to reach out, but it seemed like nobody wanted to hear it. Showing me compassion and turning their backs on my abuser seemed to be a conflict of interest that nobody could be bothered with. Or maybe they could only listen once or twice before getting sick of hearing me lament over it. People were always telling me to simply be strong, whatever that means. I grew exhausted from begging to be heard, I couldn’t even look anybody in the eye without falling apart. Physical symptoms started to appear. I began rapidly losing weight, my normally clear complexion was wrecked, my hair fell limp, my body was coated in slimy foul smelling sweat that I’ve never experienced before or since, my immune system succumbed to things it used to fight off with no problem, my overall health declined as I spent my days drinking and crying in public. My hometown was, and still is in many ways, Hell for me. I moved to NYC to create as much space as possible between me and that experience. Moving to NYC was me cutting my noose and giving myself another chance. People in pain are often cast aside and made to feel guilty. Some people’s pain lasts a lifetime. Not everybody has the same chance at happiness and that’s the truth. I saw blood and violence at a really early age and I’ve been medicated or in therapy since then. I was institutionalized twice as a young person and spent most of my early adult life as a drug addict. I’ve wanted to die a lot in my life and it sometimes shocks the hell out of me that I’m still here at all. I’ve put people I love through a lot of emotional turmoil because of suicidal feelings and, yes, attempts. Trevor’s death has me fucked up. When I think of how alone he was, I want to fucking scream.
