( i know that because he told me that i was silly a few times that day). In this image, blaize Itodo caught me carried away by the powerful offering of Cameroonian artist Yvon Ngassam. The first time I met Yvon was at the gallery of small things in Dakar two years ago. Time blessed us again with another opportunity in Bamako last year where he was part of the recontre de Bamako where he delivered one of the most powerful offerings of the biennial. The title of the project is I HAVE A DREAM where Yvon chronicles the lives of bike taxi drivers in the Benin capital of Cotonou, each driver he met talked about their dream of a better life beyond what they were doing at the time of the project. Anna Atkins (1799-1871) British nationality. I Anna Atkins was a scientific and botany. She is considered the first female photographer. Anna became interested in photography as a means of recording botanical specimens for a book of scientific reference and today also for art: Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions 1843–53. This publication was one of the first uses of light-sensitive materials to illustrate a book. Anna is considered the first female photographer. She is credited with being the first person to publish a photo book. Other theories claim that the first female photographer was Constance Fox Talbot. This issue reminds us of the episode created about the first photography debated between Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre and Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Anna dedicated her life to the study of biology and its representation with the cyanotype process. Likewise, her works with the photographic process with British seaweed blueprints published in three editions between 1843 and 1853, represented an essential contribution to art. Juneteenth is the oldest national holiday celebrating the end of slavery. It originated on June 19th, 1865 when Union troops brought news to Galveston, Texas that the Civil War was over and that enslaved persons were freed, over two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The SCHS is dedicated to telling the stories of all South Carolinians. To this end, we plan to digitize over 8,000 pages of 18th and 19th century manuscripts that bear witness to the lives and experiences of enslaved persons in South Carolina. With the portrait as the primary format, Heyward’s metamorphosis becomes evident in his quest to understand what W.E.B. Du Bois identifies as the Black American’s “double consciousness.” In his preeminent book, The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois describes this internal conflict, “an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings....” . You may have teammates around you but they will be depending on you just as they do every other day. The truth is simply that it all counts, every thought, every decision, every action, every day. Training your heart, body, spirit, soul and mind is up to you. Perfecting your technique, thought processes and emotional posture is up to you. This is why it is said that greatness is not an action but a philosophy a way of life. In EP you must be great in many different areas such as proper planning, social dynamics, soft and hard combatives/tactics, sometimes even politics just to name a few. The true dichotomy of executive protection and what I find most interesting is simply that a good agent is 100% a gentleman and 100% tactician which equals 100% Security Professional. Doing it right is actually a very tall order that requires a life of daily evolution through deliberate and consistent individual action... Only the price of admission to live by the warrior code as we well know. The point is that at the end of the day all we ever eat is the fruit of our own labor so be a good steward. Build yourself and your character well on a daily basis so that you will hold up in the furnaces of life no matter what comes. And by Gods grace if you still should fall on that day even though you have been faithful it is probable that you will still fall well which can be the highest honor I think. Wow, I just watched a live video about the relationship between Pastors and Musicians. I owe some really great young musicians an apology. I have often viewed many musicians as employees who pimp the church for a check. Man this video nearly brought tears to my eyes in repentance thinking back on some moments I could have poured value instead of harsh criticism. These gifts need to be affirmed just like everyone else who serves to build the kingdom. Dont get me wrong, there are some that really may not care about the ministry moment and its just about a check. Thats in anything in life. However, Ive learned as a Pastor we cant judge them all based on the actions of some. Musicians are not mind readers (in the name of flowing in the spirit) and they are not robots. They are humans with feelings, bills, relationships, opinions and a life outside of church just like everyone else. Life doesn’t make any sense sometimes. Especially when such an amazing person is taken from this world due to one of the biggest problems we have in this country. A pastor, a family man, a person who cared so deeply for his community. Greg was one of the first people I had the privilege of photographing when I was first learning how to use a camera at 17 years old. He shared his story with me and it greatly impacted the work I was interested in making. Today we may say goodbye, but his legacy will live on forever. First four images made back in 2013, last one from just a few months ago in the beginning of quarantine. Rest In Peace Pastor Gregory Boyd, you will be missed. Every Wednesday for the month of July we will be highlighting the collection at Clark Atlanta University Art Museum with selections chosen by our museum staff. Today’s selection is James Reuben Reed’s, “Depressed” (n.d), Oil on Masonite, 1950.002. This selection was made by Special Projects Curatorial Assistant, Grace Gardner, @grace.gard “I selected “Depressed” by James Reuben Reed quite frankly because it has always frightened me. With a height of 54.75 inches, only 6 inches shorter than me, it envelops me with its magnitude. Its darkness — the gray walls, black shoes, charcoal suit, and blue black skin — makes me actively search for sources of light within this oil portrait. I find that light in the whites of this man’s eyes, which never seem to stop staring at me. In 1918 businessman and community leader Frederick Madison Roberts earned the title of Californias first Black elected assemblyman. Roberts defeated his opponent who ran his campaign with nothing but racial slurs against him. Instead of race-baiting, Roberts ran his campaign on real policy. His candidacy was built on securing voting rights for Black males. Through his work he was able to pass a number of civil rights mesaures in the areas of public accomodations and education. He also sponsored legislation to establish UCLA, expanded the use of school textbooks, and proposed civil rights and anti-lynching measures. Frederick Madison Roberts won many elections, serving a total of 16 years in the state assembly. Another interesting fact about Frederick Madison Roberts is that he was the first recorded Black graduate of LA High School! Shoutout to all the Romans out there!
