There’s no easy way to say this but George’s family is having tremendous difficulty making ends meet and despite the enormous financial burden of his funeral at 25 years of age he has a child. A wonderful daughter that will tragically grow up without a father. Please help if you can. I know these are tough times for all of us but we are only going to get through this by helping one another and being there for our community. Her name was Tracy “Mia” Green🕊 (9/29/20) PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Law enforcement sources say the man charged with the murder of a transgender woman in West Philadelphia Monday has now confessed to the killing. Police say Abdullah Ibn El-Amin Jaamia was pulled over at 41st Street and Westminster Avenue after he blew a stop sign because he was rushing a woman, Tracy “Mia” Green, to the hospital after she was shot three times around 8 a.m. With lights and sirens on, officers helped escort the Jeep Wrangler to Penn Presbyterian, where 29-year-old Green, a transgender woman, was later pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources say El-Amin Jaamia told detectives he was trying to rescue Green as she was yelling for help nearby and that he told them Green started to take off her clothes in the car, before she was shot in the neck, as they were driving. Officials have charged El-Amin Jaamia with Green’s murder, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and related offenses. Green is the second known transgender woman to be killed in Philadelphia this year. Dominique Rem’mie Fells was found dead and dismembered in the river near Bartrams Garden this summer. “This latest act of violence against a member of our community is a somber reminder of the epidemic of violence against trans individuals. It is a crisis that cannot be allowed to persist any further. The countless painful losses experienced during this year alone—especially within our transgender communities of color— remind us that there is much work to be done in the pursuit of full equality, respect, and justice for us all, the citys Office of LGBT Affairs said in a statement. Ask lesbian activist Patricia McCombs whether she saw women who lived, loved, and most importantly, looked like her growing up pre-Stonewall, and her answer is swift and firm. “Never,” said McCombs, a Chicago woman who, decades later, would play an unexpected role in changing that pattern. Her work as a party promoter and vocal lesbian rights activist earned her a spot in the Black Lesbian Archives, an Atlanta-based historical preservation project looking to document and share the story of black gay women for generations to come. Comprised of nearly 1,000 scrapbooks, audio files, videos, poems, newsletters and photos, the exhibit is an effort of Krü Maekdo, who this month kicks off a 30-stop traveling tour. Her goal: highlighting the existence of what many consider a marginalized community within a marginalized community. The tour kicks off in Atlanta, and will include a Feb. 23 showing at Charis Books and More. It will wrap up this July in Chicago, where Maekdo got her archiving start. We know these have been strange and stressful times for all of us out there, and we could all use a break to daydream to some other place. We are delighted to premier our video “Edges of the Night” today on @billboard which takes us down to Preservation Hall in New Orleans on a hot day in the middle of August while we were recording our latest album MASS. Ben Jaffe and Preservation Hall Jazz Band opened up the hall on a Sunday afternoon and we all crammed in along with the Asylum Chorus Choir and King Britt to record this song live off the floor. There’s no air conditioning in the hall except for the buzz of a few ceiling fans. It was hot. We went to work. We sweat. We toiled. We pushed, and somehow we got the take. We praised the ghosts of the hall for letting us get one in. If you listen at the end you can hear us all howling that we made it. All things must pass. Our heart goes out to all who have or will suffer. However, when the light at the end of this tunnel comes we will celebrate in music with you all. Dear Ms Greer, I’ll never understand what makes people like you publicly criticise something you clearly know nothing about. Isn’t there enough negativity in the world already? The extraordinary woman who carried both our sons is a private person. She’s not a publicity seeking person like yourself. Collectively, we decided to remove the surrogate’s name from our son’s birth certificate to protect her identity. This turned out to be an extremely wise move, as a journalist managed to illegally acquire a copy of our son’s birth certificate from the registry office. A spectacular feat, given we hadn’t even received the very first copy ourselves. The same newspaper that has run your misguided rantings also published the full details from that birth certificate online. May I respectfully ask you to butt out and mind your own business? Something to celebrate! We’ve been nominated for an award🏆 We are so excited to be up for ‘Best Restaurant Takeaway Adaptation’ at this year’s Manchester Food & Drinks awards Lockdown was difficult for everyone; as well as getting as operating as a take away - we had a massively reduced team. But we managed to do frontline food drops to the police 👮‍♂️& our local nhs hospitals 👩‍⚕️ , as well as operating a meals on wheels service for our local retirement community 👵🏽 & helping with prescription collections. Little know fact...I tossed my hat into the acting ring once. I was living in Italy my senior year @ NYU and the legendary #WoodieKingJr called and said that he had a roll for me to play. I explained that I was living my best life in Italy and that I wasn’t an actress. He told me the one and only #RonMilner had written this role and it could only be played by me. If you you know Woodie than you know no one says no to the King. So back to NY I went to do my very first Off-Broadway play. The more I thought about it the more excited I became. I remember going into our first table read, nervous but ready and fam, when I tell you I was HORRIBLE, I was horrible! Inexperienced, anxious, overwhelmed, you name it! I just knew I was going to tank the whole production. Seeing how nervous I was my co-star (new to the game as well) held my hand under the table and whispered: “Deep breaths....you got this sis” and he never stop holding my hand for the whole run. He was magic, he captivated, he held space, he was generous and funny. He was hardworking and humble. He was so protective and pensive. A thinker. He was like watching a master class in acting. He was a force to be reckoned with. He was Chadwick Aharon Boseman. We were babies. I knew that show was the end for me in terms of acting but everyone who witness Chad’s gift knew it was just the beginning and that the sky was the limit. Over the years whenever we would see each other he would hold my hand. And ask: “you good Sis? Camping is the new cultural melting pot of North America. 50% of the newest campers are Hispanic and African American outdoor enthusiasts adopting the camping lifestyle. 🏕 ⁣ ⁣ The outdoor industry represents a $646 billion outdoor economy, and the Black American spending power in the country represents over 1 trillion dollars, with black consumers continuing to set trends and inspire popular culture. 💯⁣ ⁣ The proportion of national park and state park camping among African American/Black and Asian campers reached an all-time high in 2018. The rates of African American campers’ interest in hiking/backpacking have almost doubled since last year. 📈⁣ ⁣ More millennial (32 percent) now identify themselves as lifelong campers – and 90 percent of teen campers say they plan to camp as adults. No matter the age group, glamping is hot. Today, we are overwhelmed with how the community has come together in this time of need. Healthcare workers, First responders, the City, the County, fellow Non-Profits, Community-owned businesses, our Neighbors, and many Volunteers are all working together to stand up against our common enemy. We are driven by the gratitude and appreciation for all that we serve. We are driven by the faces of those who felt forgotten and now know they are not alone. We are driven by those who stand beside us and continue to put in the long hours and late nights. Our future has a lot of uncertainty. We receive new information every day that changes our reality and frankly is hard to even imagine. Link in bio and stories of my latest @forbes piece! A new initiative @trustuscotton aims to make America’s $7 billion Big Cotton industry more sustainable. Is it greenwashing or on the path to driving real change? For decades, organic cotton was viewed as the gold standard for sustainable cotton initiatives but widespread adoption of conventional farming methods have changed the conversation. I’m glad to see more detail and data about US conventional cotton’s environmental impact. For example, despite the notion that all cotton is water thirsty, irrigated water usage has declined dramatically for American cotton farmers since the 1980s thanks to better technology. 👖 This underlines what I found in my @anothertomorrow story on cotton, which is that if farming conditions vary from field to field and country to country, why do we keep talking about cotton in terms of global industry averages? It’s bound to be inaccurate. We either need better regional and national data or TALK TO FARMERS MORE. Seriously, how often do we get to read stories in mainstream press about farmers and what they think about sustainability. 👕 In the piece, Tennessee farmer Matt Griggs talks about how he’s reduced his synthetic chemical usage by planting cover crops and using manure instead of manmade fertilizer. He’s saved money doing it, too. The Protocol is launching with some interesting data and ambitious goals. Some of the questions I’m asking: - Are the Protocol’s assertions that US cotton has gotten greener over time misleading? Yes, I think they are and explain why in the piece. - Resource efficiency is not the same as sustainability; I explain why in the story. - The Protocol has no a separate metric for measuring the impact of synthetic chemicals; given the US industry’s pro-agrochemicals bent, does this mean the Protocol will attempt to hide the negative impacts of pesticides? - Can industry-driven initiatives ever provide honest or clear data? Support our arrested comrade! On Saturday night, our comrade Forrest was arrested at a demo in Oakland and taken to Santa Rita jail. Members of the Oakland Builders Collective have been doing jail support for him with the help of the NLG and other amazing people from our communities. Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out in concern for Forrest and his friends, family, and comrades. Here is the info we are able to share now about his arrest, along with asks we are making to our community! Forrest is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. His bail is set for $50,000. Legal support is already arranged. He has decided to NOT be bailed out at this time. Instead, Forrest wants all funds and energy that could potentially go to his bail/court support to instead go towards: 1. supporting others who have been arrested and will be arrested at future demos; prioritizing more vulnerable arrestees e.g. black trans women 2. building funds and organizing for community self defense. The best way that YOU can help to support Forrest and the work he is doing is by organizing towards that community self defense. 1. NEW RECORDING AND PUBLISHING DEAL GUIDELINES 1.     The artist owns the copyright in the recordings and songs and leases them to the record label / publisher for a limited term. 1 year deals. 2.     The record label / publisher is a service provider that receives a share of the income for a limited term. The split can be 80/20 in the artists favor. 3.     DEPENDANTS Artists must be dependent on no one but themselves to manage their catalog. You should need NO ONE else to understand the business you’re in. 4.      LAWYERS the first thing that changes about Record Deals is actually lawyers. We need Plain English contracts. A Lawyers role is to IMPROVE deals…. not charge for contracts we cannot understand or track. Re-write deals to be understandable from FIRST READ.  5. EQUITY & BLANKET LICENSES ARE THE MAJORITY OF FUTURE NEW INCOME. If you’re with a major you have invested your ‘songs’ as shares in their power to get equity and deals. Almost ALL new deals now are based on ALL songs going to a store or app. The equity is the Artists NO MORE blanket licenses. It should be clear from day one… what shares you get NOW and when you leave. If your song helps a deal over the line you invested in that store / app same as they did.  UMG now has a 2.2 billion share holding stake in Spotify. This is the artists. The system as to how we get share balances on our royalty statement needs to be created and a system on when Artists can cash in. 5. ADVANCES ARE JUST LOANS!! On Artists re-signing these stop. Advances are Loans with 75% interest rates (or worse). NO other business in the world takes a look at the business, buys shares, starts to profit when it profits. Record Companies have to buy into you, not loan you. 6. ROYALTIES Again back to dependents. You need a business manager to read how you did? So you pay to see your money!!! NO MORE. Rogers is combating a much older issue: global food spoilage. - Believe it or not (but please do), we throw away 72 billion pounds of food each year. What would our lightly-clothed, hunter-gatherer ancestors say if they knew that? - In 2011, Rogers inadvertently rerouted his career after feeding his brain with a thought-provoking podcast on world hunger while driving through rural California farmland. - At the time, @jamestrogers_ was a PhD student in Material Sciences. He was about as briefed on world hunger as the layman. WASHINGTON (ABC7) — While food trucks once lined D.C. streets by the dozens, no more. With so many people working from home, few of the trucks bother to come out.But there’s at least one exception, the “Jerk at Nite” food truck that parked at 11th and H, NE even before the virus struck. It’s owned by former Howard University students, who in 2015 actually started cooking Jerk Chicken and other Jamaican dishes in a dorm room, advertising through social media and delivering to other students.“It grew into a food truck, that was around 2017, 2018,” said one of the owners, Kadeem Todd, adding “it went from one food truck to two food trucks.” _ Now if you look at the corner of 11th and H where they park, you’ll see their red, black and green colors also on the corner building, which they are currently renovating to turn into a restaurant with outdoor seating. How have they been so successful in a time of COVID? Nadia Myrie, sister of one of the co-owners and a food truck manager says its thanks to the customers. _ “Our loyal customers, that really is it. We have a lot of loyal customers,” said Myrie. Todd says they’re different from many other food trucks. “They weren’t trying to create a brand around their food,” said Todd. _ “I feel like we made a concerted effort to always reach out to our customers and make them follow us on social media.” They say many of their customers at 11th and H are former Howard University students or their frat brothers from Omega Psi Phi and many other social media acquaintances they’ve made along the way. _ A customer we saw in line for food, Jordan Uwhuvetine, told us the owners are his frat brothers and though he lives in Virginia, “Every time I’m in D.C., I come to the food truck. I love Jerk at Nite!” They say they plan to have their sit-down “Jerk at Nite” restaurant open by late October. Does that mean they will retire the food trucks? _ Said Todd, “We can’t abandon our bread and butter!
