Music. Dancing. Laughing. Love. For our family, joy comes through music. Of course Granger, the band, the music, & the stage all bring our family so much joy. Seeing him fulfill his passion in life brings joy. —— But we integrate music in all parts of our day. One thing I always do is dance with my kiddos. We turn the music up and have our kitchen dance parties. No matter what kind of day you had, what kind of mood you are in, music can always make it better! We would dance our cares and bad moods away. I miss our dance parties. We don’t do them as often now, but you better believe when this house is finished, we will be dancing on tables again. The second to last slide was filmed the day River went home. He was dancing his last day on earth. That little one was always dancing. The last slide was 6 months after he went home. It took us 6 months to dance again but we did it. Turn the music up with your babies. Let them dance on tables, get out there with them like no one is watching and feel the joy it brings to your heart. (And make sure you document when you can. On Friday June 26th, on my parent’s 21st wedding anniversary, my dad suffered a sudden and ultimately fatal brain aneurysm. I hopped on the first flight from where I was working in Pennsylvania to head to his bedside alongside my mother in Bellingham, Washington. My parents had only a week prior set out on a 3-month road trip from their home in California housed in a retro airstream that they spent months renovating together. When I was born, my biological father was too scared to assume the role of fatherhood and my rockstar of a mom and I drifted around the country together for 6 years. It wasn’t until we moved back to Massachusetts that she reconnected with her high school sweetheart and fell in love with the man that’d become our everything. Soon they were married, and I was adopted—both my mom and I proudly, eagerly taking his last name: des Cognets. Through their marriage I had gained a father, Louis, and an older brother, Nick. The following 21 years as a family have been nothing short of idyllic and over that time, largely through example, he taught me how to become a man. He gave me a sense of humor riddled with dry sarcasm and untimely puns. Those that know me can attest to that. He inspired in me a deep appreciation of the outdoors through multiple backpacking and canoe trips together. The next trip I take I’ll be imagining hiking in his footsteps like I have so many times before. And most importantly, he showed me, along with my mother, what true, unbridled love looks like. The kind that you roll your eyes to in movies and think, Jesus isn’t that cliche, but then sigh and wonder if that level of love really does exist (it does). As we left the hospital yesterday evening we passed a flagpole at the main entrance and my mom said, ‘that belongs at half mast.’ I shimmied up the pole 7ft. to the halyard while she pushed up from the bottom and managed to lower it somehow evading the gaze of hospital security. We had a good laugh after that. And here my mom and I are again like we were so many years ago, fatherless, husband-less, but not alone, because we’ll never be able to lose the people we have become as a result of him. - @cvdcinema on Instagram

🤓 Screen time tip 🤓 Are your kids doing virtual school? Part of the reason we opted out of virtual school is that i think our kids (5 & 7) are too young for nearly 4 hours a day of computer time a day. But, if your kids are spending extra time on screens consider using a pair of blue light filtering glasses 👓 it will help them sleep better at night and reduce some of the stimulatory brain activity that can lead them to being a little extra energized (aka going nuts 🥜) after watching TV or using the computer . . Sidenote: we don’t let our kids use tablets at all. I’ve seen the brain imaging studies that show how tablet use lights up the same areas of the brain as a heroine user. 😳 It’s no wonder why some kids (and teens) have major meltdowns when they’re asked to stop using them or keep asking to use your phone. This is late, and very fitting. Our family is late going just about anywhere these days 🤦🏻‍♀️ ⠀ They say good things are worth fighting for. I love a good saying, but I was always a little sceptical about this one... until Navy. We fought for you sweet girl, literally and figuratively. The road to you was not an easy one, but one we would venture down time and time again if we knew it always lead to you. ⠀ 2 kids in less than 2 years... many would say we were blessed, and don’t think for a second that we don’t thank the powers the be each and every day for what we got... but you little girl, are just a step above the divine. You got some crazy voodoo powers that have shifted this entire family. ⠀ You’ve made Keelan a better brother, maybe even the best. He’s found empathy and a love for something bigger than himself and his needs. This 7 year old boy puts you first... even before his hockey cards. ⠀ You made Hattie a “big sister”, a role she takes very seriously. They say the middle child gets overlooked but you, sweet Navy Bean, have given Hattie purpose. Hattie now has place to direct all the love she’s got into a person who will always receive it with open arms... and maybe the occasional scream. ⠀ You’ve given Our Man a Daddy’s Girl. There is no one you laugh harder for, smile bigger for and love more than your Daddy. Check it out... my oldest son Acie LOVES drawing highly-detailed street maps based upon different cities hes visited &/or studied online. Hell combine his favorite sections of different cities together into single large maps. I just gave him a new big roll of drawing paper & he drew ALL of this in just a couple hours while sitting at our kitchen table yesterday. All he uses are two short rulers and a pencil. There’s a part of me that doesn’t want “life to go back to the way it was” -at.all. The last few months have been tough -for everyone- and yet, it’s been an opportunity to make some very needed changes in my life. Things I’ve gotten rid of since March: ⏰ 4:30am to workouts 😮 the feeling that I have to do everything 🏋🏻‍♀️ routine that didn’t make me happy 💰 gym membership ✌️ a few of toxic people 🥗 guilt over food 🗓 should-dos 👩🏻‍💻 work projects I’m not exited about 💩 that dragged me down Things I’ve added: 🥰 snuggles ⏰ later wake up times 🛀 time for me 🏃🏻‍♀️ mileage (a lot of it) 🎥 nights 2-3x week 😷 in every car, bag, and at home 🧠 confidence 💻 virtual assistants at work ☕️ time with E 📲 a different person (almost) daily 👨‍🍳 delegated some of the cooking 🛒 almost all online or 🚗 pick-up 💊 that I’ve needed 📰 30min min of @wsj ✅ shit off neglected lists I could look at the last few months as the worst times, filled with uncertainty + anxiety... and let those thoughts creep into my mindset.. which then leads to projecting it out to the world... #throwbackthursday to this cozy hotel library in York, where I stayed exactly 1 year ago because just-released DUKE had been shortlisted for the British Romance Novel of the Year Award. Fun Fact: my mum (= trusty travel buddy) and I arrived before the room was ready, but we had to get ready for the ceremony. So they kindly locked the library and we changed and did hair & make-up between the bookshelves 🤪 🌟So much has happened since that day: DUKE became a bestseller, I published a second book, finished a third, started a fourth, and signed a contract for 2 more books with Berkley. Im also planning a novella or two (Lucie & Tristan romping their way across Italy, anyone?) There were other plans, professional and personal, but a global pandemic happened and brought much to a screeching halt, which alas is probably the case for all of us. Im super grateful to my readers that I do get to keep working on The League 🙏 🌟 I hope this time next year, we can all see our loved ones again whenever we want and move around freely. No school. No activities. No big playgroups. If I don’t make an effort to leave I could stay in my house with my kids for days on end...but you’d find me quickly losing my mind. 🧐 I know you’re thinking, she obviously already lost her mind, how does this connect? Well, when I sent that exact text 👆instead of feeling panic, I knew I would be taken care of... 💖 ENTER SLAM NASHVILLE 💖 My husband deployed two weeks ago, and since then I’ve had to heavily rely on others for help. At every turn there has been a SLAM sister there for me. Yes, we are a workout group - but we are SO MUCH MORE - we are also a support system, a safety net, friendly motivators, confidants, running buddies, sanity savers...emergency babysitters. Listen, I know you can get online workouts ANYWHERE these days. ✅ We have those. And I know you can head back to the gym at this point for in person classes. ✅ Yup, we have that too. But I assure you, NOWHERE will you find the local, loving, shirt-off-their-back, drop-everything-to-help, kind of community that we have. My daughter was in hospital this week. . It is hard being a parent with a sick child, but I find being a doctor with a sick child can be really stressful. . You often know the illness well, you know the course it will take, you know the potential complications, and you know the possible treatments. There is so much emotion involved when it is your own child or family member. When your child is up all night for days, and you become sleep deprived…it becomes harder. . Most of the time, childhood illnesses are not serious and they will go away all on their own. As doctors we know that many illnesses self-resolve, and we spend a lot of time supporting patients through these times. . When my daughter was sick this week, I did all the supportive treatments I was supposed to do, but she still got sicker. I brought her to see one of my colleagues - one of the GPs at work...who advised we go to hospital. This was the right thing to do. She was admitted for a few days, and is now recovering well. . I am thankful for the nurses and doctors who took care of her in my GP clinic, in the emergency department, and on the paediatric ward. I am grateful she is now well and slowly building back up her strength, stamina, and appetite. I am happy to see her back to herself now…at home…and with a smile on her face. . An old favorite of @enderblender from our trip to India. Don’t you love his toothless smile? 😍 It’s #throwbackthursday and I was thinking about how much these memories mean to me. In the #bayarea wildfires have been raging and a few days back we faced the prospect of getting ready for evacuation. We are not close to the fires however there were warnings of lightning that had caused the fires so anything was possible. I stayed up one night and the following day uploading favorite images to the cloud. It occurred to me that at times we don’t have a warning so if you haven’t backed up your images make sure you do. A couple of things you can do if you are thinking about backup. 🅰️ There are various cloud based options that can back up your files. I tried a couple in the past and they were too slow for me with the volume. I am only backing the most critical images. If you have an Amazon account, you can get ‘unlimited’ image storage for a relatively low fee. I have been paying and not using it so decided to upload there. They have a desktop app so you can download it and add your files. The only thing I don’t love is the uploads don’t retain the folder structure which may or not be important for you. 🅱️ You can also buy a portable weather proof hard drive. They are small enough to carry in your bag. I plan on getting one or two to have a duplicate copy. #saveyourmemories So thankful for the firefighters that have been working night and day to protect us. happy new year. L’Shana Tovah. As I was born around this time I’ve always equated ‘New Year’ w/ the beginning of autumnal vibes instead of Jan 1. We are all experiencing year of weird covid’ celebrations rubbing up against our innately social natures. Even if you are a natural introvert & secretly having a solo rave that the world is finally closer to your mode-you cannot deny that humans are inherently social. We are not special in this way, all animals have their own form of physical social networking (including the recently revealed single cell bacteria, wha? parties be like microbial!) We honor this nature by celebrations, rituals & festivities. This year we will all experience different kind of birthdays/ holidays for us all, as this covid-cooked world ain’t finished in 12 months. Approaching my bday I had an intense longing to taste my mom Deborah’s aka Bubbie’s famous Poppyseed Cake w Custard filling & Cream Cheese icing under my candles. The cake is dense, moist and quite famous for celebrations in our hometown community. Im sure the potency of craving was connected to the need for such comfort and tradition in such an unknown, unstable moment in history. I quickly laughed & shushed my lil’ self -it would be difficult to make as it required 3 cake pans & a double boiler. (sung to the tune of Becks 3 turntables & a microphone) I didn’t even say the wish outloud. Sometimes silent simple dreams travel through the ether. Unbeknownst to me, my beloved Nicho had covertly requested this recipe + made it with Bubbie phone-coaching after I’d gone to bed. When he presented it to me I wept sumptuous tears as if I was okay with crying. Then we had the most complete Rosh Hashana meal & ritual I’ve ever had but there was a complete dearth of challah in the area. No worries, mate, super-Debs rolled up her sleeves w/ a complete lack of baking experience & made this stunning braid on the second slide. This moment, just a poppyseed on the timeline of humanity will pass-but our growth during these months will be immeasurable. In the meantime I’ve got a great pod to soften my evolution. To say the last couple of months have been challenging for most of us would be an understatement. There have been some pretty low lows but also some pretty high highs. This weekend is one of the highest highs. ✨We are home in RI at my parents house. ✨I was able to hug my mom for the first time in months now that she is post chemo (can we talk about how absolutely chic she is in the pic?) ✨The girls and I got to see Anson for the first time in over 6 weeks (in person, not on TV). We went from spending more time together than ever, to the longest stretch of being apart, ever. ✨Yesterday we got to celebrate my dads birthday on what might have been the most beautiful day of summer. I am hands down the luckiest girl in the world to call him Dad. ✨Today is the launch of my new Erika Carter Fitness website. (Link in bio). Hard to believe it’s been 6months of doing virtual. Being a mother is fraught with hard decisions. I read something recently that talked about the increase in the numbers of decisions we have to make now since Covid. The article highlighted the rise in stress and anxiety too. I feel it. I know many of you do too. One of the ways I’ve been combatting this anxiety is to do the things I can do to proactively protect my family. No one knows what this flu season will be like, but we are doing what we can to ward off influenza to help protect ourselves and others. Vaccines aren’t 100%, but they can help prevent infection and reduce the risk of becoming seriously ill if you do get sick. Reactions can happen, but they are overwhelmingly mild. Every decision is weighing risk vs benefit. The benefit of not catching the fu is worth having a sore arm and being a little tired for 24 hours. My boy is so much braver than I was at his age and he took his stick like a total champ. And now we both feel better about going into cold and flu season. We can’t get a Covid vaccine yet, but we will do what we can to prevent other illness that could be confused with or mask Covid symptoms - and make others around us sick.
