August 26th 2012 I get tasked to have my platoon go into a village that hadn’t seen NATO forces for a very long time. The intel that I gathered led me to discover that the village was being used as an enemy stronghold and they roamed freely during the day. I’m not going to get into the politics of war in this post, but I’ll just say that my recommendation was disregarded... Fast forward we’re on the ground and things immediately kick off on a bad note; aerial surveillance identified a spotter in the village...We continue to push forward and reach our dismount point. Switching to travel on foot, we push into the village where I encounter the next unusual occurrence, a group of children who would not come to me when I offered them some of the snacks that I always carried on patrol. Instead, the group of children waived for me to come to them, I ignore their gestures. We continue moving forward and then, as if things couldn’t get worse, we get a call that our surveillance is going down due to bad weather. A very eery feeling comes over everyone as we knew this significantly increased the chance of us being ambushed. I reach the entrance of the village with the lead element and we come across a Y-Junction where an odd situation begins to rapidly unfold. At the left fork we noticed a large group of people being ushered away from us and at the right fork was a small gathering of people waving for me to come over to them. I direct a group of my men to set up a machine gun team to cover down the right fork while I take a team to investigate the fleeing mass of people. I took off with my team fully expecting to get into a firefight...I was wrong, instead an enemy Soldier was hiding behind a wall amongst the people at the right fork; amongst the same people who had just waved me over to them several minutes before. This enemy Soldier popped out from behind the wall and let off a long spray of bullets from his AK-47. It’s been a long week of fire fighting in the Tsavo Triangle. On Tuesday thanks to the many involved, the fire was finally contained. From all of us at Tsavo Trust we would like to say a sincere thanks to our fellow stakeholders and the wider community: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service, Wildlife Works, Tropic air, Taita Estate and so many more who volunteered to help. The ongoing collaborations and support have been immense. In this joint effort, the Tsavo Trust ground teams and HQ workforce in three vehicles assisted in the firefighting for 6 days. On one day our ground teams conducted a 23 hour shift to battle the fire. The Tsavo Trust aerial unit covered a total of 2,865 kms over 25 hours of flight during the firefighting activities; working alongside the DSWT pilots in guiding the ground teams and helicopters to areas of high risk. All the teams worked tirelessly round the clock in extremely challenging conditions, and in the end we came out on top. On missions like this our crews attach a piece of equipment called a Bambi Bucket to the cargo hook on the bottom of one of our #AW139 helicopters. These buckets hold over 1,200 litres of water, which is normally picked up from a nearby lake or river and continuously dropped on the fire. Before the wall of rain this week, most lunchtimes I’ve been setting up two camp chairs between the raised beds of dahlias in the garden, stretching out between them like a telephone wire, and reading with a hat tipped over my eyebrows. I take a jug of water and some chocolate and the baby monitor, and blow ants off the choc at intervals. Workaday bliss, elevated to something more wonderful now hail is pegging the windows. Being a mother is fraught with hard decisions. I read something recently that talked about the increase in the numbers of decisions we have to make now since Covid. The article highlighted the rise in stress and anxiety too. I feel it. I know many of you do too. One of the ways I’ve been combatting this anxiety is to do the things I can do to proactively protect my family. No one knows what this flu season will be like, but we are doing what we can to ward off influenza to help protect ourselves and others. Vaccines aren’t 100%, but they can help prevent infection and reduce the risk of becoming seriously ill if you do get sick. Reactions can happen, but they are overwhelmingly mild. Every decision is weighing risk vs benefit. The benefit of not catching the fu is worth having a sore arm and being a little tired for 24 hours. My boy is so much braver than I was at his age and he took his stick like a total champ. And now we both feel better about going into cold and flu season. We can’t get a Covid vaccine yet, but we will do what we can to prevent other illness that could be confused with or mask Covid symptoms - and make others around us sick. My favorite type with makeready underlay. Makeready underlay is the paper adhered under the piece of type to raise the printing surface. It is an easy way to help raise the type that is not picking up ink so that it can be printed on the press. Printers often used test prints as makeready. These small pieces of paper now serve as documents of how the type was used. The building housed Vasbouragan Hall, as well as offices for St. Gregory Armenian Church and various organizations. To say the last couple of months have been challenging for most of us would be an understatement. There have been some pretty low lows but also some pretty high highs. This weekend is one of the highest highs. ✨We are home in RI at my parents house. ✨I was able to hug my mom for the first time in months now that she is post chemo (can we talk about how absolutely chic she is in the pic?) ✨The girls and I got to see Anson for the first time in over 6 weeks (in person, not on TV). We went from spending more time together than ever, to the longest stretch of being apart, ever. ✨Yesterday we got to celebrate my dads birthday on what might have been the most beautiful day of summer. I am hands down the luckiest girl in the world to call him Dad. ✨Today is the launch of my new Erika Carter Fitness website. (Link in bio). Hard to believe it’s been 6months of doing virtual. Been a year or three since the Montauk Catamaran Company has had a build project, and Capt. David is restless. How about this? The design would be based on Mon Tiki Largo. Wed stretch her amas (hulls) amidship by about 22 feet, without increasing their cross section. The result would be a waterline profile 74x4; super skinny, super fast, and allow for a double dance floor. Wed stretch her akas (cross beams) from 30 to 38, giving Maximus an ocean of mahogany deck. Wed add another mast, and extend the upper mast sections by 8 feet. Just low enough to get under ICW bridges, but high enough to set topsails. With the three masts with topsails set, about 2400 square feet total. Her COI would come in at about 150, too crowded to really sail her, but can you imagine the (post-CoVid) parties wed have! And with half that number shed sail like a dream; achieving double digit speeds in modest conditions without breaking a sweat.
